Success in housekeeping and maintenance work depends on more than cleaning quickly: you need reliable routines, attention to detail, safe work habits, communication, and practical judgment. The exact mix depends on the job. Hotel housekeepers focus on guest rooms and service requests, while janitors and building cleaners may care for whole facilities and sometimes handle minor repairs.

What skills will I use in this role?

Employers look for people who can work consistently, treat people and property with care, and recognize when a task needs help beyond their role. These skills are useful across housekeeping and building-cleaning jobs, though the daily tasks differ.

Attention to detail and thoroughness

A finished room or work area should be clean, orderly, and ready for its next use. That means noticing a missed surface, a low supply, a spill, or damage that needs reporting. The UK National Careers Service identifies thoroughness and attention to detail as hotel-housekeeping skills.

Time management and dependable routines

Workers often have assigned areas or rooms to finish within a shift. Prioritizing tasks, following an efficient sequence, and keeping to expected schedules helps a team prepare spaces on time. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists time-management skills as important for janitors and building cleaners.

Communication and customer service

Clear communication helps workers coordinate with coworkers and supervisors, pass along guest requests, and report damage or maintenance needs. Hotel staff may respond to a request directly or route it to the right person. In buildings open to employees, visitors, patients, or students, respectful interpersonal skills matter too.

Careful use of cleaning products and equipment

Workers need to learn the employer’s procedures for using, storing, and maintaining equipment and supplies. New janitors and building cleaners commonly learn equipment use and maintenance on the job. Cleaning agents can pose hazards, so follow task-specific training, product-label and safety-data instructions, and applicable workplace rules. Do not mix products unless the product instructions and employer procedures explicitly allow it.

Physical stamina and safe movement

The work may involve prolonged standing and walking, bending, lifting supplies or equipment, and repeating the same movements. BLS notes that janitorial work can be physically strenuous and that workers may receive safety and ergonomics training. Good movement habits and following workplace procedures can help reduce strain, but physical demands vary by assignment.

Practical problem-solving and knowing your limits

Some janitors handle routine minor repairs, such as addressing a leaky faucet. They should report more substantial problems rather than attempt work outside their training or authority. Hotel housekeepers generally report room damage and maintenance needs so the appropriate staff can respond.

Flexibility, initiative, and teamwork

Work priorities can change when a room needs another pass, supplies run low, or a request comes in. Initiative means noticing what needs attention and acting within the role’s procedures; flexibility means adapting without neglecting assigned safety and quality standards. Supervisory roles add duties such as assigning work, inspecting rooms, and training staff.

How do hotel housekeeping and building-cleaning jobs differ?

The job title alone does not determine every duty. Employers, facilities, and local requirements differ, but the common emphasis changes with the setting.

Career path Typical focus Common tasks Service and progression
Hotel housekeeping Guest rooms and shared hotel areas Cleaning rooms, making beds, changing linen and towels, restocking guest and bathroom supplies, handling laundry, and reporting damage or maintenance needs May respond to or route guest requests; experienced workers may progress to head housekeeper or accommodation-services manager in the UK guidance
Janitorial and building cleaning Offices, schools, hospitals, and other kinds of buildings Emptying trash, sweeping, mopping or vacuuming, cleaning restrooms and frequently touched surfaces, addressing spills with suitable equipment, ordering supplies, and sometimes making minor repairs May secure buildings and report major repairs; advancement depends on the employer and available supervisory or facilities-related roles

The BLS describes janitors and building cleaners as keeping buildings “clean, sanitary, orderly, and in good condition.” The UK National Careers Service describes hotel housekeepers as making sure accommodation is “clean and tidy and ready for guests.” These descriptions reflect different service priorities, not a universal division of duties.

How to become a hotel housekeeper or janitor

Janitorial and building-cleaning entry in the United States

For U.S. janitorial entry-level work, formal education is typically not required. Most workers learn on the job, often alongside an experienced worker; some employers may prefer a high school diploma or equivalent. BLS says certification is not required, although it can demonstrate competence. Check individual job postings for the employer’s actual requirements.

Hotel-housekeeping routes in the United Kingdom

The UK National Careers Service lists direct applications, college courses, apprenticeships, and entry through another hotel role followed by company training as possible routes. Course and apprenticeship availability can change. Its profile identifies progression to head housekeeper or accommodation-services manager, but those opportunities depend on the employer and local openings.

What the training figures do—and do not—show

BLS training data for 2025 say on-the-job training was required for 97.8% of U.S. maids and housekeeping cleaners and 88.8% of the broader building and grounds cleaning and maintenance occupational group. Prior work experience was required for 23.7% of workers in that broader group. These are occupational-group estimates, not guarantees about a particular vacancy or individual applicant.

What are the working conditions and safety risks?

Schedules can include evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays, particularly in janitorial work. Physical demands and shift patterns vary by employer and facility. Cleaning work may also involve heavy lifting, bending, contact with body fluids or infectious agents, and handling cleaning agents.

NIOSH identifies possible occupational hazards including musculoskeletal disorders, infectious diseases, skin conditions, allergies, and respiratory illness. These are risks, not inevitable outcomes. Follow task-specific employer training, product instructions, and applicable workplace requirements. Use protective equipment specified for the product and task rather than assuming one type suits every cleaning agent.

What do U.S. job and pay figures say?

The following figures apply to U.S. janitors and building cleaners, not to all housekeeping roles or all countries. BLS reports a median wage of $17.71 per hour in May 2025. Its 2025–2035 projections show 2% employment growth and about 321,800 openings per year on average; most projected openings are expected to result from workers leaving the occupation or workforce, rather than employment growth. Actual pay and openings vary by location, employer, and job.

Quick Recap

How to choose the role that fits you

  • Consider the service setting: Hotel work is closely tied to room readiness and guest needs; building cleaning can involve a wider range of facilities and users.
  • Compare the task mix: Decide whether you prefer linen, room preparation, and restocking or broader sanitation, waste, floors, and possibly minor repairs.
  • Check the physical and schedule demands: Ask about lifting, standing, bending, shift times, and weekend or holiday work before accepting a position.
  • Look at training and advancement locally: Confirm the employer’s onboarding, any required qualifications, and whether supervisory or facilities-related roles are available.
  • Read the job posting closely: Duties and requirements vary. Do not assume that a certification, education level, or repair responsibility is universal.
