Data Suggest Elon Musk’s Politics Alienated Some Tesla Buyers—But Don’t Prove Why Sales Fell

Survey responses and a Yale counterfactual estimate suggest Musk’s politics may have hurt Tesla’s appeal, but product cycles and competition also shaped sales.

Survey data point to a sharp shift in who was buying Teslas and to many consumers saying they were less inclined to consider one after Elon Musk’s political activity. Yale researchers also estimate that Tesla may have lost more than a million sales in a counterfactual analysis. But these are different kinds of evidence—not proof that politics alone caused Tesla’s sales weakness.

What changed in Tesla’s buyer mix?

Strategic Vision figures reported by Fortune show that Democrats made up a smaller share of Tesla buyers during part of 2024 than in the two preceding model years. The figures describe the political composition of Tesla buyers in the study—not the percentage of Democrats who bought or rejected a Tesla.

Period Democrats among Tesla buyers Other reported buyer shares Source and measurement
Model years 2022 and 2023 40% Republicans: 29% in 2022. Independents: 28% in the reported 2022 comparison. Strategic Vision’s New Vehicle Experience Study, as reported by Fortune on April 22, 2024. Fortune said the study covered 250,000 buyers.
Beginning of model year 2024 15% Comparable Republican and independent shares for this point: not stated by Fortune. Strategic Vision, as reported by Fortune on April 22, 2024.
October/November 2023 Not stated for this specific period in the reported figures Republicans: 32%; independents: 44%. Strategic Vision, as reported by Fortune on April 22, 2024.
By March 2024 35% Comparable Republican and independent shares: not stated by Fortune. Strategic Vision, as reported by Fortune on April 22, 2024.

The reported Democratic share rebounded from its early-model-year 2024 low by March, so the series is not a simple, uninterrupted decline. And a change in buyer mix alone cannot tell us whether the number of Democratic Tesla buyers fell, other groups bought more, or both.

Did consumers say Musk’s politics changed their view of Tesla?

Yes, many respondents did—but a stated intention is not a completed purchase decision. In a June 2025 Slingshot Strategies survey of 8,000 consumers, reported by the Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report (EVIR) and Semafor, respondents were asked about Tesla after Musk’s time in government.

More favorable toward Tesla 10% Stated change in favorability after Musk’s time in government; EVIR, June 2025.
Less likely to consider a Tesla 38% Stated purchase consideration, not observed shopping or buying; EVIR, June 2025.
More likely to consider a Tesla 6% Stated purchase consideration, not observed shopping or buying; EVIR, June 2025.

The responses were sharply divided by party, but not confined to Democrats. EVIR’s June 2025 breakdown reported the following shares saying they were less or more likely to consider a Tesla after Musk’s government tenure:

Party identification Less likely to consider More likely to consider
Democrats 59% 5%
Independents 36% 4%
Republicans 18% 7%

There is also evidence that Republican sentiment shifted after Musk’s break with Donald Trump. EVIR figures reported by Semafor said Republicans were 11 percentage points less likely to consider a Tesla than they had been in April. That result complicates the idea that political alignment automatically turned Republican respondents into prospective buyers.

What does the Yale estimate of lost sales mean?

Four Yale researchers—Kenneth Gillingham, Matthew Kotchen, Jonathan Levinsohn and Barry Nalebuff—estimated that Tesla may have lost a million-plus sales because of Musk’s partisan activity. Yale’s October 29, 2025 interview describes the finding as a counterfactual estimate, not a count of known customers or cancelled orders.

How the comparison works

The researchers examined how Democratic and Republican buying patterns diverged after Musk bought Twitter in October 2022. They also compared party groups’ choices of Tesla against other electric vehicles and hybrids. Their reasoning is that product competition and a lack of new models should affect the groups similarly; a growing divergence between them can therefore help isolate an effect associated with Musk’s political turn.

Why it is not a direct sales tally

A counterfactual asks what sales might have been under a different scenario. The estimate depends on whether the comparison groups would otherwise have followed similar trends and whether other changes can explain the gap. Yale’s interview presents the researchers’ interpretation and method; it does not establish that more than a million identifiable buyers rejected Tesla solely because of Musk’s politics.

What else could explain Tesla’s sales weakness?

Political backlash coincided with product and market pressures. Yale’s account notes that Tesla had gone several years without launching a new mainstream model while Ford, GM, Hyundai and other competitors improved their offerings. The Associated Press also cited the aging lineup, competition and buyers waiting for the refreshed Model Y in its report on Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 deliveries.

Tesla reported 336,681 global deliveries in the first quarter of 2025, compared with 387,000 in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Associated Press on April 2, 2025. That year-over-year decline is an observed company result, but it does not identify how much—if any—was attributable to politics rather than product timing, competitors or broader EV-market conditions.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

  • Supported: Strategic Vision’s reported buyer mix shifted away from Democrats at the start of model year 2024, then partly recovered by March. The 2025 EVIR survey also found consumers across party groups reporting lower consideration of Tesla after Musk’s government tenure.
  • Supported, with a different kind of evidence: Yale researchers’ comparison led them to estimate a million-plus counterfactual sales effect associated with Musk’s partisan activity.
  • Not established: These figures do not prove that political conduct alone caused a particular customer to avoid Tesla or explain the full change in deliveries. Buyer composition, stated intentions, actual deliveries and modeled counterfactual sales are distinct measures.

Yale co-author Kenneth Gillingham recalled hearing Tesla owners use the phrase, “I bought this car before I knew Elon was crazy.” That is an anecdotal example of owner sentiment, not a representative survey result.
