Emirates President Tim Clark Criticizes Boeing’s Latest 777X Delay

Boeing’s latest update keeps the 777X’s first deliveries in 2027, with certification tests ongoing and no quarter specified. Emirates president Tim Clark says the uncertainty is affecting the airline’s plans to expand.

Boeing’s latest schedule puts the first 777X deliveries in 2027, but the company has not specified a delivery quarter in its July 2026 program update. Emirates president Tim Clark criticized the uncertainty, saying it is complicating the airline’s growth plans. Emirates said in November 2025 that it expected its first 777-9s from the second quarter of 2027; that was the airline’s expectation at the time, not a confirmed handover date.

What changed in Boeing’s 777X schedule?

In October 2025, Boeing shifted the 777X’s expected first delivery to 2027, from its previous 2026 target. The National reported that the program was then seven years behind its original 2020 schedule, set when it launched in 2013. The delay also brought a $4.9 billion pre-tax earnings charge for Boeing, reported by The National and the Associated Press. Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg attributed the delay to certification and said it did not result from newly discovered technical issues. (The National; Associated Press)

Boeing’s July 16, 2026 program update still pointed to deliveries in 2027 and said certification testing was continuing. The company said its test fleet had completed only part of the planned certification testing. That makes 2027 a Boeing target, not a guaranteed customer handover date; the update did not give a quarter. (Boeing)

What did Tim Clark say about the delay?

Clark, Emirates’ president, said the airline did not know when to expect its first aircraft and said Boeing did not know either. “It’s bad news for us. It’s seven years after we expected it to happen,” he told The National. Asked when Boeing had promised to deliver the first aircraft, Clark said: “They don’t know. They honestly don’t.” He also said Emirates’ priority was receiving the aircraft, not extracting value from Boeing, while acknowledging that a discussion about damages would take place. Why does the delay matter to Emirates?

The timing affects Emirates’ ability to expand. Clark said the airline had routes it wanted to launch but could not, and that retrofitting older aircraft was allowing it to grow capacity at a lower level than before. The National reported that Emirates was spending about $5 billion on retrofits of older aircraft. (The National; The National)

The delay has not meant Emirates walked away from the aircraft. In November 2025, the airline announced an order for 65 additional 777-9s, bringing its listed future deliveries of the type to 270. In the same release, Emirates said it expected its first 777-9 deliveries from the second quarter of 2027. That was Emirates’ stated expectation in November 2025; Boeing’s later July 2026 update continued to cite 2027 without naming a quarter. (Emirates; Boeing)

Who is Emirates’ CEO?

The headline’s “CEO” label is imprecise for Clark: the reporting identifies him as Emirates president. Emirates’ November 2025 release identifies Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum as the airline’s chairman and chief executive. (Emirates)
