There is no verified list showing that DOGE permanently closed dozens of Social Security field offices or identifying “worst-hit” cities. The Associated Press reported 26 SSA-related locations with lease terminations expected in 2025, based on General Services Administration data. An expected lease end is not proof that a public-facing office closed or that services stopped. On March 27, 2025, the Social Security Administration said it had not permanently closed or announced the permanent closure of any local field office since January 1, 2025; it separately said a hearing office in White Plains, New York, had been announced for permanent closure.
What the 2025 list does—and does not—show
The AP report identified 47 SSA offices on a lease-termination list, with expected termination dates in 2025 for 26 of them. The dates below are AP-reported projections drawn from GSA data, not confirmation of what ultimately happened at each site. The cited information does not establish whether a location later moved, consolidated, stopped providing a particular service, or remained open.
That distinction matters because a lease, a hearing room, a hearing office, and a public-facing field office are not interchangeable. SSA said many of the spaces it submitted to GSA for termination were small hearing rooms without assigned employees, and that most hearings were conducted virtually. See the Associated Press report of March 19, 2025 and SSA’s March 27, 2025 statement.

Why reports of closures can conflict
SSA’s March 27, 2025 statement said it had not permanently closed or announced permanent closure of a local field office since January 1 of that year. It also said one permanent hearing-office closure had been announced in White Plains. This is a different category of site and closure from the lease dates in the AP list.
DOGE separately disputed a claim that five Georgia Social Security offices had closed. Its post said the confusion involved five permanent remote hearing sites—single rooms within field sites—and said SSA was not closing field sites in Georgia or elsewhere. That is DOGE’s characterization, not independent confirmation of the operating status of every location. The wording and context appear on DOGE’s savings page.

How to check whether your local office is open
A 2025 projected lease date cannot tell you whether an office is open today. Before traveling, check SSA’s Office Closings and Emergencies page for temporary service interruptions, then use the official office locator linked there to confirm the address and service location. Because notices can change, check again shortly before your visit.
