Those brand-level results do not mean every watch from those makers will resell for more than its purchase price. The exact reference, actual price paid, completed-sale evidence, and selling costs all matter.
Which watch brands hold value best?
EveryWatch’s H1 2026 report covers January 1 through June 30, 2026. It says its analysis draws on transactions aggregated from 650 dealers and 472 auction houses, rather than asking prices or estimates. On its average value-retention measure, Patek Philippe ranked first among the three brands highlighted here, followed by Audemars Piguet and Rolex.

All figures in the table are EveryWatch estimates for H1 2026. The two columns describe different things: average value retention measures how far above or below retail a reference trades on average, while the retention rate measures the share of references trading above retail, regardless of the size of the premium. Thus Patek Philippe’s higher average retention and Rolex’s higher share above retail are not contradictory; the measures answer different questions. What does “holds value” mean?
A watch “holding value” can mean that it resells close to its original price, trades above retail, or performs better than other watches. Those are not interchangeable outcomes. A brand average can conceal large differences among references, and a reference above retail does not tell you the amount you will receive after costs.

- Average premium or discount: How market value compares with retail on average for the covered watches.
- Share above retail: How much of the covered catalog trades above retail, without showing the size of each premium.
- Realized sale evidence: Completed transactions are more informative than an unsold listing price when estimating what buyers have paid.
- Your own result: The relevant comparison is the sale proceeds you can actually receive against what you paid, including any selling costs.
Provider figures should not be blended into one ranking. WatchCharts’ Value Retention page defines its measure as the secondary-market premium or discount to retail for current-production watches, and its displayed brand averages differ from EveryWatch’s H1 2026 results. Its page presents a separate current-production snapshot in USD; different coverage, methods, and timing can produce different estimates.
Which Rolex models are cited as stronger retainers?
EveryWatch’s interpretation of its H1 2026 analysis names the GMT-Master, Daytona, Submariner, and Yacht-Master sports collections as stronger retainers within Rolex’s broader catalog. That is a collection-level observation, not a claim that every reference, dial, material, or purchase price in those collections will hold value.

For a specific Rolex, compare the exact reference and configuration with recent completed sales. A collection name or brand-wide average is not enough to establish what a particular watch is worth in the resale market.
How to assess a particular watch before buying
- Identify the exact watch. Confirm its reference, configuration, and whether it is current-production or discontinued. Broad brand rankings cannot substitute for reference-level evidence.
- Start with your actual purchase price. Retail is a useful benchmark, but your own cost is the relevant starting point if you are buying at a premium or discount.
- Check completed-sale evidence. Distinguish transacted prices from asking prices, which show what sellers hope to receive rather than what a buyer paid. Keep the source and reporting period attached to any comparison.
- Look at both market measures. Ask whether the exact watch appears to trade above retail and how much of the broader brand’s catalog does so. A high share above retail does not establish a large premium for your chosen reference.
- Account for resale friction. Condition, the difference between a dealer’s buying and selling prices, and selling fees can affect your proceeds. The cited brand-level reports do not provide a universal adjustment for these factors, so do not treat a market estimate as your net cash return.
What the broader market figures do—and do not—show
EveryWatch reports $10.5 billion in secondary-market sold value and 795,000 watches sold in H1 2026. Across the same reporting period, its median sale price was $5,900; 55% of listed watches sold, and median time to sell was 43 days, compared with 39 days in H1 2025. These are broad-market context figures, not forecasts for an individual watch or a guarantee that it will sell within a particular time.

Can a watch be a reliable investment?
The available figures describe past or current market outcomes; they do not establish an expected investment return, a guaranteed resale price, or net proceeds after costs. A watch that traded above retail in the measured period could later sell for less, and market-wide averages cannot predict an individual sale. If resale value is central to your decision, treat it as uncertain and make the purchase price—not a brand reputation or projected premium—the basis of your calculation.
