Elon Musk did not explicitly apologize for all of his “horrible behavior.” On July 1, 2025, he said his February CPAC chainsaw display “lacked empathy” in retrospect—a limited acknowledgment about that specific moment.
What did Elon Musk say?
In a July 1, 2025 post on X, Musk replied to a user criticizing his chainsaw appearance and suggesting he had acted foolishly. He wrote: “Valid point. Milei gave me the chainsaw backstage and I ran with it, but, in retrospect, it lacked empathy.” Futurism and Bloomberg reported the post and its context.
What was the chainsaw display?
At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February 2025, Musk appeared with Argentine President Javier Milei and displayed a chainsaw Milei had given him. Musk later said Milei handed it to him backstage and that he “ran with it.” The July post referred to that display, not to a separate incident. EL PAÍS also reported the statement and the CPAC context.
Was it an apology for his broader behavior?
Not in the words reported. Musk said the display lacked empathy in retrospect; he did not write “I am sorry” or identify broader conduct or harms. Calling it a sweeping apology goes beyond the quoted statement. The headline’s phrase “horrible behavior” is a characterization, not Musk’s wording.

How does this compare with his earlier remarks about empathy?
Futurism reported that Musk had said on Joe Rogan’s podcast in late February 2025, “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy, the empathy exploit,” and used the phrase “we’ve got civilizational suicidal empathy going on.” Those remarks contrast with his later description of the chainsaw display, but the contrast alone does not establish his private motives or a change in his views.
