The available sources establish Tesla’s start at the factory—not that Elon Musk personally acquired it or the precise terms of a property transaction.
What happened at the Fremont factory?
The factory in Fremont, California, had been associated with NUMMI, a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. Tesla later began operations at the site. Tesla’s 2020 impact report says the company started operating at its Fremont factory in 2010 and describes the facility as having been built more than 60 years earlier by established automakers. That wording supports a change in factory operator and use, but it does not say Elon Musk personally bought the property. “Musk took over” is shorthand for Tesla’s move into and operation of the former NUMMI site.
Why was the factory significant to NUMMI?
NUMMI was more than a previous name attached to the plant. A 2020 scholarly account describes the joint venture as an effort to improve American automotive assembly by learning Japanese production techniques. What did the 2020 “10 years ago” wording refer to?
On October 27, 2020, an anniversary post was reported as marking ten years since Tesla opened its Fremont factory. Tech Times reproduced the wording, “Exactly 10 years ago today, Tesla opened its Fremont factory! GM & Toyota had abandoned the former NUMMI plant, but Tesla brought it back to life.” The article attributes the post to Viv (@flcnhvy); it is secondary reporting, rather than independent verification of the original social-media post. The anniversary’s ten-year interval aligns with Tesla’s reported 2010 operating start and the 2020 post date. It should not be read as evidence that Musk personally acquired the facility on that date. Tesla’s report says the factory was built more than 60 years before the report’s 2020 publication; it does not establish an exact construction year.

The cited company report and secondary anniversary coverage do not establish the factory’s purchase price, the acreage transferred, or the legal terms of any transaction. They support the history of the site and Tesla’s operating start, but not a detailed account of how ownership or property rights changed hands. No quantitative comparison of NUMMI’s and Tesla’s manufacturing performance follows from these sources.
