An electronics flea market can turn up hand tools and musical instruments alongside components and test gear—but that variety is documented here in a specific 2014 report about the Flea at MIT, not as a guarantee about what any market stocks today. If you plan to visit, check the organizer’s current event details and treat any item you buy as a used find that may need inspection.
What else can you find at an electronics flea market?
In an April 23, 2014 report for EE Times, Martin Rowe described a visit to the Flea at MIT. His list included components, connectors, cables, computers and computer parts, stereo equipment, and test equipment. The market also had goods outside the electronics category, including hand tools and musical instruments—some of them not electric. Read Rowe’s report in EE Times.
That is a useful picture of the range one visit offered, not a survey of today’s market inventory or a promise that the same goods will be available elsewhere. The report also notes meters among the test equipment. If you work with electronic finds, a multimeter may be a useful tool to bring, but a measurement alone does not establish that used equipment is safe or fully functional.
How current electronics markets differ
Electronics-oriented swap meets and hamfests still appear on organizers’ calendars, but their locations, schedules, and event focus are local. The pages below describe distinct events; they do not provide comparable current inventory or pricing.

For MIT Swapfest, the MIT Radio Society describes the event as “a place to buy, sell, and swap amateur radio, electronic, and computer equipment.” That stated focus does not establish what individual sellers will bring on a particular date.
What is a hamfest?
A hamfest is a gathering centered on amateur radio, and it may include more than a flea-market area. The ARRL describes hamfests as meetings for people interested in Amateur Radio, with exhibits, forums, and flea markets. Use the ARRL hamfest and convention calendar to look for events; check each organizer’s page for its date, venue, and program.

How to plan a useful visit
- Verify the event name and location. Similar-sounding markets may be separate events, as with the electronics market in Saratoga and the general De Anza College market in Cupertino.
- Check the organizer’s page before travelling. Dates, venues, entry arrangements, and vendor details can change; tentative dates are not confirmed dates.
- Decide what you are looking for, but stay flexible. A 2014 report can illustrate the possible mix of goods, but it cannot tell you what will be for sale now.
- Inspect used goods carefully. For electronics or test equipment, check the item’s condition and suitability for your intended use. A multimeter can help with some checks, but it is not a guarantee of safety or performance.
