Bryan Johnson is the entrepreneur who sold Braintree to PayPal for about $800 million and later redirected much of his fortune toward technology, neuroscience and longevity research. He is now best known for Blueprint, an aggressively measured health program built around diet, exercise, sleep, supplements and frequent testing.

Johnson’s project has made him a prominent—and polarizing—figure in the business of extending human life. But the important distinction is between what he is attempting, what he sells and what science has actually established: he has not shown that Blueprint reverses aging or makes anyone immortal.

Who is Bryan Johnson?

Bryan Johnson is an American entrepreneur, investor and longevity advocate. He was born on August 22, 1977, and studied at Brigham Young University and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, according to his official biography.

He first became wealthy in online payments, not health care. Johnson founded Braintree in 2007. The company built payment-processing tools for online and mobile businesses and acquired Venmo in 2012. PayPal bought Braintree in 2013 for approximately $800 million.

After that sale, Johnson became an investor and founder in fields including artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, genomics, energy, neuroscience and advanced materials. His current public profile, however, is dominated by his effort to slow the effects of aging.

How did Bryan Johnson make his money?

Johnson’s fortune began with Braintree. The company benefited from the growth of mobile and online commerce, giving businesses infrastructure for accepting digital payments. The acquisition of Venmo also helped make Braintree attractive to PayPal.

The roughly $800 million purchase price was the value of the transaction, not Johnson’s personal cash proceeds. A founder’s eventual wealth depends on factors such as ownership percentage, taxes, earlier funding rounds and how much of the proceeds are reinvested. Still, the sale gave Johnson the capital to finance ambitious projects without relying entirely on outside investors.

He subsequently committed substantial personal funds to science and technology:

Project What it does Reported financial commitment or context
OS Fund Invests in areas such as genomics, synthetic biology, AI, energy and advanced materials Launched in 2014 with about $100 million of Johnson’s own money
Kernel Develops non-invasive systems for measuring brain activity Johnson reportedly invested roughly $100 million
Blueprint Commercial longevity brand and personal health protocol Includes products, testing, dietary practices and health monitoring

Kernel says its systems are intended for research use and are not approved to diagnose or treat disease. That distinction matters when evaluating headlines about Johnson’s technology ventures: investment in a promising research field is not the same thing as a proven medical result.

What is Blueprint?

Blueprint is both Johnson’s personal longevity experiment and a commercial health brand. The program combines:

  • Highly controlled meals and dietary restrictions
  • Regular exercise and sleep scheduling
  • Supplements and nutritional products
  • Blood, fitness and other laboratory testing
  • Medical monitoring
  • Some cosmetic and dermatological procedures

Johnson publishes versions of his protocol, but it is not static. The details have changed over time, and a January 2026 version describes a tightly scheduled routine involving food, exercise, sleep, supplements, testing and procedures.

How much does Bryan Johnson spend on longevity?

Media reports have commonly estimated the cost of Johnson’s personal regimen at about $2 million per year. That figure is not an independently audited household budget, and the total can change depending on whether it includes staff, medical care, testing, research, travel, products and business expenses. Earlier profiles reported that he had spent more than $4 million developing Blueprint.

For most people, the relevant lesson is not to copy the spending level. Johnson’s routine is built around resources—specialists, testing, time and capital—that are unavailable to ordinary households. The strongest low-cost parts of a longevity strategy remain familiar: avoid smoking, sleep adequately, exercise regularly, eat a generally nutritious diet and obtain appropriate preventive care.

Johnson announced another high-priced venture in February 2026 called Immortals. Axios reported that three participants could pay $1 million for access to the program. The company’s website describes Immortals Concierge as a fully managed longevity-medicine service intended for a limited number of members. A premium price is evidence of exclusivity and service intensity, not evidence that the treatment works.

Is Bryan Johnson a billionaire?

There is no reliable public evidence establishing Johnson as a billionaire. Public descriptions generally place him in the millionaire, multimillionaire or centimillionaire category, while online net-worth estimates vary widely and are not audited.

The $800 million Braintree sale also should not be read as a statement of his current net worth. Johnson may have owned only part of the company, and he has spent or invested substantial sums since the acquisition. Unless a credible source provides verified information about his assets, liabilities, taxes and ownership stakes, “tech millionaire” or “wealthy entrepreneur” is more defensible than “billionaire.”

Does Bryan Johnson claim to be biologically 18?

Johnson uses biological-age measurements to argue that some of his body systems are aging more slowly than his chronological age. These measurements can include blood markers, fitness measures and molecular indicators.

That is not the same as proving that his entire body is equivalent to an 18-year-old’s. Different biological-age tests can produce different results, and there is no universally accepted test that establishes whether someone has reversed aging or will live indefinitely.

The phrase “biologically 18” is therefore too broad when presented as a settled medical fact. It generally refers to selected measurements or estimates, not a clinical determination that Johnson has become biologically identical to an 18-year-old.

What happened in the “young blood” experiment?

In 2023, Johnson took part in a multigenerational plasma-exchange experiment involving his teenage son and elderly father. Johnson later said that he saw no benefit from the procedure.

Reports that he was “drinking his son’s blood” are inaccurate. The experiment involved plasma exchange or infusion, not drinking blood. The distinction is more than a technicality: plasma procedures are medical interventions, and they are not equivalent to a wellness beverage or supplement.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says young-donor plasma has not been approved for anti-aging, memory loss or general wellness uses. The agency also says it is not aware of evidence demonstrating effectiveness for those purposes. Plasma transfusions can be appropriate for specific medical indications, but that is a different use case.

What is the Netflix documentary about?

Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever is a 2025 Netflix documentary about Johnson, his family, his health regimen and his attempt to extend human life. Netflix presents it as the story of a wealthy entrepreneur placing his body and fortune behind a campaign against aging.

The film helped move Johnson from a niche longevity and technology audience into mainstream culture. It documents his methods and motivations, but it does not establish that Blueprint is a clinically proven path to immortality.

What is Bryan Johnson’s current health status?

In May 2026, Johnson was diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis, which he later described as his “stomach eating itself.” The condition involves the immune system attacking acid-producing cells in the stomach. It can interfere with the absorption of iron and vitamin B12 and may develop without obvious symptoms.

Experts cited by STAT cautioned that Johnson’s suggestion that his childhood diet caused the condition was speculative. Autoimmune and genetic factors, including autoimmune thyroid disease, are associated with autoimmune gastritis.

The diagnosis does not prove that Blueprint caused the illness, nor does it prove that Blueprint is useless. It does show a limit of personal health optimization: extensive monitoring did not prevent Johnson from developing—or immediately identifying—a chronic autoimmune condition. One person’s test results and diagnosis cannot establish whether a regimen works for the broader population.

What can be learned from Johnson’s financial and health strategy?

  1. Separate wealth creation from wealth preservation. Johnson made his fortune through a technology company and then used that capital to fund speculative research and personal experiments. Those are different financial activities with different risks.
  2. Do not treat a founder’s spending as a recommendation. A $2 million annual routine is not a realistic household health budget, and expensive testing can produce more information without producing better outcomes.
  3. Look for outcome evidence. Biomarkers, press coverage and attractive product claims are not substitutes for controlled clinical evidence showing longer life or better health.
  4. Check what a business is actually selling. Blueprint products, medical concierge services and research-use-only neurotechnology should not be treated as interchangeable or as proof of a single anti-aging solution.
  5. Protect the basics first. Emergency savings, adequate insurance, manageable debt and retirement contributions usually have a more concrete effect on a household’s financial future than speculative longevity products.

The Bottom Line

Bryan Johnson is best understood as a tech entrepreneur who became wealthy by selling Braintree to PayPal and now spends heavily on longevity research, personal experimentation and the Blueprint brand. His wealth gives him access to unusually intensive testing and medical services, but it does not make his claims scientifically proven. He has not demonstrated that Blueprint reverses aging or can help people live forever.
