Emirates said regular schedules were restored by April 20; Dubai Airports reported normal scheduling at Dubai International Airport (DXB) by April 23. Those were retrospective updates, not a statement about current flight status.
What happened to Emirates flights during the Dubai floods?
On April 16, 2024, exceptional rainfall flooded roads and disrupted operations at DXB. The Associated Press reported more than 142 millimeters of rain in Dubai over 24 hours by April 16, compared with an average annual rainfall of 94.7 millimeters at the airport. Those figures describe different periods and do not establish a precise rainfall return period. The effects extended beyond aircraft operations. Flooded roads made it difficult for passengers, pilots, cabin crew, airport staff, and deliveries of essential supplies to reach the airport. What did Emirates suspend, and what continued?
In a notice issued April 17, Emirates said it would suspend departure procedures from Dubai from 8 a.m. that day until midnight April 18. As the disruption developed, Emirates suspended departing passenger check-in, stopped ticket sales temporarily, and halted connecting passenger traffic from parts of its network into Dubai. DXB’s schedule: April 23
Dubai Airports reported on April 23 that DXB had returned to its normal schedule, with around 1,400 flight movements a day and airport roads clear of water accumulation. How do the reported cancellation totals differ?
The figures cover different scopes and should not be added together. Emirates reported nearly 400 cancellations over three days for its airline operations. Dubai Airports reported 2,155 cancellations and 115 diversions across the airport’s disruption. Why did recovery continue after schedules returned?
A restored timetable did not mean every affected customer or bag had already reached its destination. Emirates said it had secured more than 12,000 hotel rooms for disrupted customers and issued 250,000 meal vouchers. It also reported around 30,000 pieces of left-behind baggage to sort, reconcile, and deliver.
