Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro launched with a major display redesign and the new M4 chip. It came in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, starting at $999 and $1,299 respectively in the U.S. Apple no longer sells it as the current iPad Pro generation, so shoppers comparing one today should distinguish the original retail price from used, refurbished, and remaining-stock prices.
2024 iPad Pro release date
Apple announced the 2024 iPad Pro on May 7, 2024. Preorders opened that day through Apple’s online store and the Apple Store app. The tablets reached Apple Stores and began shipping on May 15, 2024.
Apple officially named the models iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) and iPad Pro 13-inch (M4). The larger model replaced the previous 12.9-inch naming convention; it is not officially called the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Every model came in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB capacities, with Silver and Space Black finishes. Apple’s original prices do not include sales tax, a keyboard, a stylus, or other accessories.

The accessories can materially change the cost

|---|---|
| Apple Pencil Pro | $129 |

| Magic Keyboard, 13-inch | $349 |
| Smart Folio, 11-inch | $79 |
| Smart Folio, 13-inch | $99 |
For example, an 11-inch Wi‑Fi iPad Pro with the $299 Magic Keyboard and $129 Apple Pencil Pro had a pre-tax purchase cost of $1,427. The equivalent 13-inch setup cost $1,777 before tax. Neither the Pencil nor the Magic Keyboard was included in the tablet box.
The box included the iPad Pro, a 1-meter USB-C charging cable, and a 20W USB-C power adapter.
Display specifications
The defining hardware change was Apple’s Ultra Retina XDR display, which uses a tandem OLED panel. That is different from the mini-LED display used in the previous 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
| Specification | 11-inch | 13-inch |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 2420 × 1668 | 2752 × 2064 |
| Pixel density | 264 pixels per inch | |
| Refresh rate | ProMotion, adaptive 10Hz–120Hz | |
| SDR brightness | Up to 1,000 nits | |
| Full-screen XDR brightness | Up to 1,000 nits | |
| Peak HDR brightness | Up to 1,600 nits | |
| Contrast ratio | 2,000,000:1 | |
Both displays support P3 wide color, True Tone, full lamination, and Apple Pencil hover. A nano-texture glass option was available only on 1TB and 2TB configurations, so it was not available on the least expensive models.
M4 chip, memory, and storage
The 2024 iPad Pro was the first Apple product announced with the M4 chip. The processor configuration depends on storage:
Rank #2
- 13" Screen size
- iOS Operating System
- 256 GB Flash Memory
| Storage | CPU | GPU | Memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB or 512GB | 9-core CPU | 10-core GPU | 8GB RAM |
| 1TB or 2TB | 10-core CPU | 10-core GPU | 16GB RAM |
All configurations include hardware-accelerated ray tracing, a 16-core Neural Engine, and 120GB/s memory bandwidth. The more expensive 1TB and 2TB models therefore buy more than storage: they also receive the 10-core CPU and 16GB of memory.
For ordinary browsing, streaming, note-taking, and office work, the 256GB model has the lowest upfront cost. Higher capacities make more financial sense for people storing large video projects, photo libraries, or professional apps locally. Buyers should not pay for 2TB simply to obtain more RAM unless their workload benefits from it.
Size, weight, and design
| Model | Thickness | Wi‑Fi weight | Cellular weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-inch | 5.3mm / 0.21 inch | 444g / 0.98lb | 446g / 0.98lb |
| 13-inch | 5.1mm / 0.20 inch | 579g / 1.28lb | 582g / 1.28lb |
Apple described the 2024 iPad Pro as its thinnest product at launch. The 11-inch version is easier to carry and costs $300 less at the starting price. The 13-inch model gives creative apps, documents, and split-screen work more room, but the larger display adds both purchase cost and accessory cost.

- Rear camera: 12MP Wide camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture, autofocus with Focus Pixels, Smart HDR 4, up to 5x digital zoom, and adaptive True Tone flash.
- Video: 4K recording at 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second, plus ProRes recording up to 4K at 30fps. On the 256GB model, ProRes is limited to 1080p at 30fps.
- Front camera: landscape-oriented 12MP Ultra Wide camera with Center Stage.
- Other hardware: Face ID and a LiDAR Scanner.
The landscape front camera is useful when the iPad is mounted to a keyboard or used for video calls. The 256GB ProRes limitation is worth checking before choosing the cheapest configuration for video work.
Ports and connectivity
- USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 support.
- Data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps.
- Support for one external display up to 6K at 60Hz.
- Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
- Cellular models with 5G, Gigabit LTE, and eSIM.
The cellular versions do not have a physical SIM-card tray. They use eSIM, so buyers should confirm that their carrier supports iPad eSIM service before paying the $200 cellular premium. Cellular service itself is also an ongoing cost rather than a one-time hardware expense.

Battery life
Apple rated both sizes for up to 10 hours of web browsing over Wi‑Fi or video playback. Cellular models were rated for up to 9 hours of web use on a cellular network. Actual battery life varies with brightness, network conditions, applications, and accessory use.
Where the 2024 iPad Pro stands now
The M4 iPad Pro is no longer Apple’s current iPad Pro generation. Apple introduced the M5 iPad Pro on October 15, 2025, with retail availability beginning October 22, 2025. As a result, the M4 model is generally found through remaining inventory, refurbished sellers, or the used market rather than Apple’s current main product listings.
When comparing a used or refurbished M4 model with a newer iPad Pro, compare the complete cost, not just the tablet’s sticker price:
- Confirm the exact size, storage capacity, and Wi‑Fi or cellular configuration.
- Check whether the listing includes the original charger, keyboard, Pencil, or case.
- Verify battery condition, screen damage, Face ID operation, USB-C functionality, and Activation Lock status.
- For cellular models, confirm eSIM compatibility and whether the device is carrier-unlocked.
- Compare the seller’s return period and warranty with the price difference from a newer model.
- Add sales tax, shipping, accessories, and any cellular plan before deciding which device is cheaper over its useful life.
A substantial discount can make the M4 attractive because its OLED display and M4 processor remain high-end features. A small discount is harder to justify when a newer model includes a longer expected support window or a stronger resale position.

The 2024 iPad Pro is best suited to buyers who specifically need its tandem OLED display, very thin design, Thunderbolt connectivity, high-end camera features, or M4 performance. It is overqualified for basic email, streaming, and web browsing, where a less expensive iPad can meet the need at a lower total cost.

The 11-inch model is the more economical choice for portability. The 13-inch model is easier to justify for drawing, video editing, spreadsheets, and multitasking, particularly if the display replaces a laptop monitor or drawing tablet. In either case, budget for accessories separately and be cautious about paying a premium for old inventory now that the M4 generation is no longer current.

The Bottom Line
The 2024 iPad Pro starts at $999 for 11-inch Wi‑Fi and $1,299 for 13-inch Wi‑Fi, with the M4 chip, tandem OLED display, Thunderbolt/USB 4, and up to 2TB of storage. Its real purchase cost can rise by hundreds of dollars once a keyboard and Pencil are added. Because the M4 model is no longer current, compare refurbished and used prices with the total cost and warranty of a newer iPad Pro before buying.
