A refurbished iPhone can cut hundreds of dollars from the purchase price, but the cheapest listing is not always the cheapest ownership decision. Battery replacement, a short return window, a carrier lock, or a warranty that excludes normal battery wear can erase the savings.
For U.S. buyers in 2026, Apple Certified Refurbished is the safest overall choice. Back Market generally offers the most selection, eBay Refurbished combines marketplace pricing with a strong included warranty, and Gazelle offers a simpler buying process. Swappa can be the lowest-cost option for experienced buyers who are comfortable checking individual seller policies.

1. Apple Certified Refurbished: best overall
Apple Certified Refurbished is the strongest choice when reliability and support matter more than getting the absolute lowest price. Apple says its refurbished iPhones receive full functional testing, genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, a new battery, and a new outer shell. The phone includes the relevant accessories and carries a one-year limited Apple warranty.
Eligible devices can generally be covered by AppleCare, although you should verify eligibility on the individual product page. Apple’s refurbished store also sells qualifying iPhones as unlocked when the listing identifies them as “Unlocked.”
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple’s main trade-off
Apple’s inventory is limited and changes as models sell out. Its discount may also be smaller than the discount from a marketplace seller. Apple advertises savings of up to 15%, but the actual reduction depends on the model, storage capacity, and available stock.
The return period is another consideration: Apple gives you 14 calendar days from delivery to return the product, compared with 30 days at several competing retailers. Keep the included cables, accessories, and documentation until you have decided to keep the phone.
Best for: buyers who want Apple’s own parts standards, warranty, customer service, and a predictable battery condition.
2. Back Market: best selection and value
Back Market is a marketplace made up of professional refurbishers, not one central refurbishment facility. That structure gives you more choices of model, storage, color, carrier, condition, and price than Apple’s refurbished store usually provides. It also means that comparing the individual seller and terms is essential.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBack Market currently uses four appearance grades:
- Premium
- Excellent
- Good
- Fair
All grades are intended to be fully functional. Back Market says standard smartphone listings have at least 80% of original battery capacity. Premium devices have a minimum of 90% and are described as using genuine manufacturer parts and batteries. Excellent, Good, and Fair devices may use compatible equivalent-quality parts.
That distinction matters. “Excellent” describes appearance and condition; it does not necessarily mean that every component is a genuine Apple part.
Back Market offers a 30-day return period and a one-year limited warranty supplied by the seller. The warranty generally covers defects in materials and workmanship, but excludes normal wear, declining battery capacity, liquid damage, substantial impact damage, and unauthorized repairs. Report shipping damage within three business days.
How to get help from Back Market
- Sign in to your Back Market account.
- Open Orders.
- Select Get help.
- If the phone does not match its advertised grade, attach photographs of every side and any damaged area.
Back Market says it aims to respond within one business day.
Best for: shoppers who want broad inventory and are willing to compare the refurbisher, grade, battery promise, and warranty exclusions.
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
3. eBay Refurbished: best marketplace warranty
eBay can be a good source of refurbished iPhones, but you need to distinguish the official eBay Refurbished program from ordinary listings labeled “Seller Refurbished.” They do not provide the same protections.
The official program has four grades:
- Certified Refurbished: from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, with a two-year Allstate-serviced warranty.
- Excellent, Very Good, and Good: from quality-vetted sellers, with a one-year Allstate-serviced warranty.
Eligible eBay Refurbished purchases include free shipping and free 30-day returns, subject to program exceptions. eBay’s Money Back Guarantee may also apply.
Before paying, look for the official “Refurbished” condition and program badge. Do not rely only on a title that says “one-year warranty.” An ordinary “Seller Refurbished” listing is outside the official eBay Refurbished program, so the seller’s description and policies control.

Best for: buyers who want marketplace prices but prefer a standardized one- or two-year warranty and a 30-day return period.
4. Gazelle: best simple buying experience
Gazelle is easier to navigate than a large multi-seller marketplace. It sells phones with condition descriptions shown on the product listing and currently advertises a 30-day return policy and a one-year warranty. WarrantyLife handles many claims involving internal components and battery health.
The main benefit is simplicity: you are usually comparing Gazelle’s inventory rather than dozens of independent refurbishers. A 30-day return period also gives you time to test cellular service, cameras, battery behavior, charging, and Face ID.
Do not assume that every Gazelle iPhone has a new battery. Check the listing’s battery information and read the warranty terms. A one-year warranty does not usually mean that normal battery-capacity decline is covered for a full year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest for: buyers who want an established refurbisher without evaluating many independent sellers.
5. Swappa: best for experienced bargain hunters
Swappa is a direct marketplace where individuals and businesses list phones. Prices can be attractive, but the buyer carries more of the evaluation burden. Swappa does not provide one platform-wide refurbishment warranty or one uniform voluntary return policy.
Rank #3
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Swappa requires listed phones to be fully functional, ready for activation, free of Activation Lock, free of cracked glass and water damage, and free of a blocklisted IMEI. The battery must charge and discharge properly, but Swappa does not impose a universal minimum battery percentage. Sellers must disclose an iPhone below 80% battery health when Apple’s battery-service message is showing.
Before purchasing, check:
- The exact model, storage capacity, color, and carrier status.
- A current screenshot of Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
- Whether the seller provides a warranty.
- The seller’s return policy and who pays return shipping.
- Whether the phone is carrier locked or unlocked.
- Completed-sale prices rather than only current asking prices.
Best for: price-conscious buyers who can inspect listings and accept seller-specific warranty and return terms.

Retailers and listings that require extra caution
Best Buy
Best Buy can be convenient for local pickup, but check whether the phone is sold by Best Buy or by a third-party Marketplace seller. For products sold by Best Buy, activatable devices such as cell phones generally have a 14-day return period. Best Buy’s policy lists a $45 restocking fee for activatable devices, subject to stated exceptions.
Marketplace Products can have different grading, warranty, fulfillment, and return terms. My Best Buy Plus and Total extended return periods generally exclude Marketplace Products. Check the Sold by and Shipping from information before checkout.
Generic “refurbished” listings
Labels such as “like new,” “renewed,” “refurbished,” “100% battery,” and “factory unlocked” are not universal standards. Before buying, identify:
- Who refurbished the phone
- Which parts may have been installed
- The minimum battery capacity, if any
- The return deadline
- The warranty provider and exclusions
- Whether the phone is unlocked and compatible with your carrier
Apple Certified Refurbished, Back Market Premium, eBay Certified Refurbished, and a private seller’s own “refurbished” label can represent very different products.

Which iPhone should you buy in 2026?
Do not compare only the purchase price. A phone with a newer processor, longer expected software support, and a battery that does not need immediate replacement may have a lower total cost over several years.
Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list includes the iPhone 11 and later, second-generation and later iPhone SE models, the iPhone 16e, and newer iPhone 17-series and iPhone Air models. Compatibility with iOS 26 does not guarantee access to every feature; features can vary by model, region, language, and carrier.
| Buyer’s priority | Practical target |
|---|---|
| Several years of useful life | iPhone 15, iPhone 16e, or newer |
| Lower price with reasonable longevity | iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 at a meaningful discount |
| Maximum savings | iPhone 11 or 12 only when substantially cheaper and in good condition |
Also check whether the model supports the features you actually need: 5G bands, USB-C versus Lightning, camera capabilities, display refresh rate, satellite features, storage, and eSIM requirements.

What to do when the phone arrives
Start testing immediately. The return period is a financial protection, not just a customer-service detail.
1. Check Activation Lock
The phone should show the Hello screen or let you complete setup without requesting the previous owner’s Apple Account. If you see “iPhone Locked to Owner,” do not keep the phone. It remains linked to the former owner’s account. Return it or have the seller remove it properly before taking ownership.
2. Verify carrier status
Open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. An unlocked iPhone should display:
No SIM restrictions
“Factory unlocked” in a listing is not enough. Only the current carrier can unlock a carrier-locked phone, and an unlocked phone must still support your carrier’s network bands and activation requirements.
3. Review parts and service history
On supported models, open Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History. Possible labels include:
- Genuine: a genuine Apple part and process were detected.
- Used: a previously used genuine Apple part, on supported newer models.
- Unknown Part: the part may be nongenuine, unverified, modified, or malfunctioning.
- Finish Repair: the repair process has not been completed.
iPhone XR/XS and later models can show battery replacement history. iPhone 11 and later generally show additional repair history, while iPhone 15 and later running iOS 18 or later can show “Used” for previously installed genuine parts.
4. Check battery health
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging and record Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and any service warning. A “working battery” promise does not mean the battery will show 100%. Back Market’s standard minimum is 80%; Apple Certified Refurbished iPhones are advertised with a new battery.
5. Test costly hardware
Test Face ID or Touch ID, every camera and the flash, speakers and microphones, cellular calls and data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, charging, wireless charging, buttons, the display, GPS, and SIM or eSIM activation. Do not assume water resistance remains intact after refurbishment; opening a phone can disturb its original seals.

Assuming refurbished means an Apple battery
Only Apple Certified Refurbished specifically promises a new battery. Back Market’s standard grades may use compatible equivalent-quality parts. Back Market Premium is the grade that specifies genuine manufacturer parts and batteries.

Treating “unlocked” as universal carrier compatibility
“No SIM restrictions” confirms that the phone is not carrier locked. It does not guarantee support for every carrier’s bands, eSIM process, or network.
Assuming a one-year warranty covers battery deterioration
Refurbished-device warranties generally cover defects, not ordinary loss of battery capacity. Back Market expressly excludes normal wear, including decreased battery capacity, from its one-year limited warranty.
Confusing cosmetic grade with parts quality
“Excellent” usually describes appearance, not parts provenance. A cosmetically excellent phone may still contain a compatible third-party battery or display. Check the parts policy and the Parts and Service History screen.
Waiting to inspect the phone
A return window can expire while the phone sits in a drawer. Set up the device, test it, save screenshots of its condition, and keep the packaging until you are satisfied.

Is Apple Certified Refurbished worth the extra money?
Often, yes, if you value a new battery and outer shell, genuine Apple parts as needed, Apple’s one-year warranty, Apple support, and possible AppleCare eligibility. It may not be the cheapest option, and its return period is 14 days rather than 30.
Is Back Market safe for buying an iPhone?
Back Market can be a reasonable choice, but it is a marketplace of different refurbishers. Compare the individual seller, condition grade, battery promise, parts policy, warranty exclusions, and return terms. Its standard smartphone battery minimum is 80%, while Premium specifies at least 90% and genuine manufacturer parts and batteries.
What battery health should a refurbished iPhone have?
There is no single industry standard. Apple Certified Refurbished iPhones are advertised with a new battery. Back Market’s standard minimum is 80%, and Premium has a 90% minimum. On Swappa, sellers must disclose an iPhone below 80% when Apple’s battery-service message is showing. Always check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
How can I tell whether a refurbished iPhone is unlocked?
On the phone, open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. An unlocked iPhone should say “No SIM restrictions.” Also confirm that the model supports your carrier’s network and activation requirements; an unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every carrier.
The Bottom Line
Choose Apple Certified Refurbished when minimizing risk is more important than maximizing the discount. Choose Back Market for the widest selection, but compare each refurbisher’s terms. Choose eBay Refurbished for marketplace pricing with a defined one- or two-year Allstate warranty. Gazelle is a straightforward middle ground, while Swappa is best reserved for buyers willing to inspect listings and manage seller-specific protections.
Before paying, write down the exact return deadline, minimum battery terms, parts policy, carrier status, and warranty provider. Those details—not the word “refurbished” in a product title—determine whether the deal is actually good.
