Tesla introduced lower-priced Standard versions of the Model Y and Model 3 in the United States on October 7, 2025. The savings came mainly from removing or downgrading equipment—not from launching a separate low-cost vehicle platform.
At launch, the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 Standard started at $36,990, while the Model Y Standard started at $39,990. After Tesla’s destination and order fees, those figures were $38,630 and $41,630, respectively, before taxes and any other applicable charges.

The Standard Model 3 was $5,500 less than the Model 3 Premium rear-wheel-drive version at launch. The Model Y Standard was $5,000 less than the Model Y Premium rear-wheel-drive version.
Those are advertised vehicle prices, not the final amount a buyer necessarily pays. Sales tax, registration, title charges, insurance, accessories, financing costs and other state or local fees can increase the total. Tesla also says its prices can change, so the live order page should be treated as the authoritative source for a purchase decision.

What the cheaper versions include
Both Standard vehicles use rear-wheel drive and have an EPA-estimated range of 321 miles. Tesla says the versions use a new battery pack and powertrain designed to improve energy and cost efficiency.
Shared equipment includes active-safety features, a 15.4-inch center touchscreen, heated front-row seats and a heated steering wheel. The lower price does not mean these are stripped-down cars in every respect: they retain the core touchscreen-based Tesla interface and electric drivetrain.
Model Y Standard
- EPA-estimated range: 321 miles
- 0–60 mph: 6.8 seconds
- Seating: Five
- Wheels: 18-inch or 19-inch options
- Maximum Supercharging rate: 225 kW, according to Tesla
- Charging claim: Up to 160 miles added in 15 minutes under suitable conditions
The Supercharging figure is a maximum, not a promise for every charging stop. Battery state of charge, temperature, charger availability and other conditions affect the actual rate and miles added.

Model 3 Standard

The more expensive Model 3 Premium rear-wheel-drive version was rated at 363 miles and 4.9 seconds to 60 mph at the time of the comparison. A buyer choosing the Standard model therefore trades away both range and acceleration, not just interior features.

Where Tesla cut costs
Tesla reduced the price by decontenting existing vehicles. The Standard versions are not the long-promised $25,000 “Model 2,” and they do not represent an entirely new model line.
Reported and confirmed differences include:
- Cloth upholstery instead of Tesla’s faux-leather-style interior material.
- Seven speakers rather than 15.
- No rear-seat touchscreen.
- No panoramic glass roof on the Model Y Standard.
- A shorter connecting light bar between the Model Y’s headlights.
- No ambient lighting in the Model 3 Standard.
- Less range and slower acceleration in the Model 3 Standard than in the Premium rear-wheel-drive version.
These changes matter differently depending on how long you plan to keep the car. A buyer who mainly values electric range, basic safety technology and a lower purchase price may consider the omissions unimportant. Someone comparing cabin quality, rear-seat entertainment or resale appeal should compare the equipment line by line rather than focusing only on the headline price.

The federal tax-credit timing changes the comparison
The Standard vehicles arrived after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired at the end of September 2025. That means the launch prices were not directly comparable with earlier Tesla prices that qualifying buyers could have reduced through the credit.
For example, a qualifying buyer purchasing an eligible vehicle when the credit was available might have compared an effective price after the credit with the sticker price of a Standard Tesla launched after the credit ended. Those are different calculations. Buyers should not subtract $7,500 from either Standard model unless a new federal, state or local incentive actually applies to their transaction.

State and utility incentives can still vary by location and eligibility. Income limits, vehicle price caps, battery rules, residency requirements and application timing may apply. Check the relevant state agency or utility before including an incentive in your budget.

How to compare the real cost
The price difference between Standard and Premium trims is only one part of the decision. Use the amount due at signing and the total cost of ownership, not just the monthly payment.
- Open Tesla’s live configurator. Confirm the vehicle price, destination and order fees, delivery estimate and included equipment for your ZIP code.
- Add taxes and registration costs. These vary by state and may be calculated from different taxable amounts.
- Get insurance quotes before ordering. Insurance premiums can differ substantially by model, trim, location, driver profile and coverage limits.
- Compare financing offers using APR and total interest. A longer loan can make the monthly payment look lower while increasing the total cost.
- Budget for charging. Home charging may require installation or electrical work. Public fast charging can cost more per mile than charging at home, depending on the local rate.
- Estimate depreciation and ownership length. A $5,000 upfront saving can be offset if the cheaper trim has a lower resale value, although future resale prices cannot be known with certainty.
As a simple starting point, the launch fee-inclusive gap between the two Standard vehicles was $3,000: $41,630 for the Model Y versus $38,630 for the Model 3. That is before taxes and other charges. The Model Y’s higher price buys a taller crossover body and additional cargo practicality, while the Model 3 is the lower-cost entry point and was quicker to 60 mph than the Model Y Standard.

- The vehicle price and destination or order fees.
- Whether an incentive is actually available for the vehicle and buyer.
- The estimated monthly payment, APR, down payment and total repayment.
- The cancellation, return and delivery terms that apply to the order.
The launch figures are useful for understanding Tesla’s pricing strategy, but they should not be treated as permanent current prices. A buyer should use the live Tesla Model 3 or Model Y order page and obtain an insurance quote before deciding whether the Standard version is genuinely affordable.

No. They are lower-content, rear-wheel-drive versions of the existing Model 3 and Model Y. They are not a separate $25,000 Model 2 vehicle.
