The headline’s figures need one correction: the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) reported in 2022 that 66% of Americans played video games regularly, and 89% of players said games provide stress relief. The 88% figure referred to players who said games help improve cognitive skills—not stress relief. These are survey responses, not evidence that gaming treats stress.
What did ESA’s 2022 report say?
ESA’s 2022 report paired two different findings: 66% of Americans played video games regularly, while 89% of players said video games provide stress relief. ESA also reported that 88% of players said games help improve cognitive skills. The 88% figure is sometimes misattributed to stress relief, but the report assigns stress relief to 89%.
ESA’s announcement described the 66% as more than 215.5 million Americans. The underlying survey was an online questionnaire completed in February 2022 by a representative sample of 4,011 U.S. consumers aged 18 and older; ESA stated a margin of error of ±2%. The players who played at least one hour a week were a subset of respondents. ESA’s 2022 report and methodology provide the figures and definitions.
How many Americans play video games now?
ESA’s 2026 report says 67% of Americans ages 5–90 play video games for at least one hour a week. That is a newer participation measure, but it is not directly comparable with the 2022 finding that 66% played “regularly”: the wording and stated threshold differ. Treat each number as a result from its own report rather than as a precise year-over-year change. ESA’s 2026 report gives the newer measure.

What do the stress-relief figures measure?
The 2022 result describes players’ reported view that games provide stress relief; it does not show that gaming caused stress to fall or establish a clinical treatment effect. ESA’s 2025 report offers a different measure: 81% of U.S. adults believed video games provide stress relief. That question concerns adults’ beliefs, whereas the 2022 figure concerns players’ responses, so the two percentages should not be read as a trend. ESA’s 2025 report page provides that finding.
ESA used a broad definition of video games in its 2022 methodology, covering console, personal computer, mobile, and VR devices, as well as social games, mobile augmented reality, virtual reality, and edutainment. The findings therefore are not limited to console or PC players.

What the survey can—and cannot—tell you
- It can report participation and opinions: the 2022 survey gives a dated estimate of regular play and summarizes what surveyed players said about stress relief and cognitive skills.
- It cannot establish a health treatment: a reported belief or experience does not prove that games reduce stress for every player, identify the cause of a change in stress, or show that gaming treats a mental-health condition.
- Its newer figures answer different questions: the 2026 weekly-play measure and 2025 adult-belief measure add context, but differ in population or wording from the 2022 findings.
In announcing the 2022 report, ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis said it showed games “supporting wellness and mental health, strengthening relationships, providing community, facilitating skills development and introducing people to new places, cultures and ideas.” That statement describes the report’s broader themes; it does not convert survey responses into clinical proof.
