Ethereum Scaling 101: A Quick Dive Into Understanding Layer 2 and Sidechains

Layer 2 networks and sidechains can make Ethereum transactions cheaper, but they rely on different security and bridge assumptions. Here is how to compare them before moving funds.

Ethereum can be expensive and slow when demand is high. Layer 2 networks and sidechains are designed to make transactions cheaper, but they do not carry the same risks—or provide the same relationship with Ethereum.

That distinction matters if you are moving money, swapping tokens, using a lending app, or transferring stablecoins. A low fee does not automatically mean low risk. Before choosing a network, you need to know where transactions are processed, who secures the chain, how assets are bridged, and how easily you can withdraw back to Ethereum.

Why Ethereum needs scaling networks

Ethereum Mainnet, often called Layer 1 or L1, provides the base settlement and security layer for Ethereum applications. Every transaction competes for block space, so fees can rise sharply during periods of heavy activity. A simple token transfer may be affordable at one moment and uneconomical at another; a more complex swap or lending transaction can cost substantially more.

Increasing Ethereum’s capacity directly could require more demanding hardware for node operators, potentially reducing decentralization. The dominant scaling approach is therefore to execute transactions elsewhere while using Ethereum for settlement, security, or data availability.

Layer 2 networks and sidechains both operate outside Ethereum Mainnet, but that similarity can be misleading. The key question is not whether a network is fast, cheap, or compatible with Ethereum applications. The key question is what security and data assumptions it makes.

What is an Ethereum Layer 2?

A Layer 2 is a separate execution environment that processes transactions away from Ethereum Mainnet while relying on Ethereum for important security functions. In a rollup-style L2, transactions are bundled together and information needed to reconstruct or verify the L2’s state is posted to Ethereum.

The general process looks like this:

  1. You submit a transaction to the L2, usually through a wallet or decentralized application.
  2. The L2 executes the transaction and groups it with other transactions.
  3. The L2 posts compressed transaction data, state commitments, and proof-related information to Ethereum.
  4. Ethereum contracts and consensus enforce or support the process for accepting the resulting state.

This arrangement can reduce the cost per transaction because many users share the cost of publishing a batch to Ethereum. It does not make the transaction free, permanently final the instant it appears in your wallet, or immune to software and governance risks.

Optimistic rollups

Optimistic rollups initially assume that a submitted state update is valid. During a challenge period, a party can dispute an incorrect update and submit a fraud proof. The system depends on transaction data being available so that independent parties can reproduce the relevant computation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For users, the practical consequence is usually the withdrawal delay. Moving funds from an optimistic rollup back to Ethereum through the rollup’s native bridge may take longer than moving funds within the L2. The exact timing depends on the network and its bridge design.

Optimistic does not mean “unsecured.” It describes the system’s assumption that updates are correct unless challenged. Security depends on the challenge mechanism, available data, the bridge contracts, the operator setup, and the rollup’s current level of decentralization and maturity.

Zero-knowledge rollups

A zero-knowledge, or ZK, rollup executes transactions outside Ethereum and submits a cryptographic validity proof. Ethereum verifies that proof through an onchain contract before accepting the claimed state transition.

A valid proof can avoid the challenge waiting period associated with optimistic rollups. However, ZK rollups still need to publish enough data—or otherwise provide an accepted data-availability arrangement—for users and independent operators to understand and reconstruct the rollup’s state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The term “zero-knowledge” is also easy to misunderstand. In most consumer explanations, it does not mean that your transaction details are automatically hidden. The important security feature is the proof that the state transition was calculated correctly.

What is a sidechain?

A sidechain is an independent blockchain that runs alongside Ethereum and connects to it through a bridge. It has its own validators, consensus mechanism, block-production rules, transaction history, and security assumptions.

Unlike a rollup-style L2, a typical sidechain does not publish its transaction data and state changes to Ethereum for Ethereum to verify. Its security therefore comes primarily from its own validator set and protocol. If those validators fail, collude, censor transactions, or are compromised, Ethereum’s consensus does not automatically repair the sidechain.

A sidechain may support the Ethereum Virtual Machine, or EVM, allowing developers to use familiar Ethereum tools and smart contracts. EVM compatibility is a technical compatibility feature, not evidence that the network inherits Ethereum’s security.

Layer 2 versus sidechain

Question Rollup-style Layer 2 Sidechain
Where does execution happen? Primarily outside Ethereum On an independent blockchain
Who provides core security? Ethereum contracts and consensus, subject to the rollup’s implementation The sidechain’s own validators and consensus
Where is transaction data published? Generally to Ethereum, using calldata or blobs Generally through the sidechain’s own infrastructure
How is state correctness handled? Fraud proofs or validity proofs, depending on the rollup The sidechain’s protocol and validators
Does it inherit Ethereum security? Substantial Ethereum-based security, with project-specific limitations No; it has separate security assumptions
Is a bridge involved? Usually, when moving assets between Ethereum and the L2 Yes, when moving assets between chains
Typical trade-off Closer alignment with Ethereum, but possible proof, sequencing, and withdrawal constraints Potentially low fees and high throughput, but greater dependence on its own validators and bridge

Calling every Ethereum-connected network an L2 is inaccurate. A network can use Ethereum-style wallets, host familiar DeFi applications, and offer very low fees while remaining an independently secured sidechain.

Bridges create a separate risk

When you bridge an asset, the original asset usually remains locked or escrowed on the source chain while a representation is minted or released on the destination chain. You are not physically moving the same token from one blockchain to another.

That process adds risks separate from the underlying network:

  • Smart-contract risk: A bug could permit funds to be stolen or released incorrectly.
  • Validator or operator risk: A bridge controlled by a committee or administrator may be censored, compromised, or manipulated.
  • Wrapped-asset risk: The destination token may lose its value or redeemability if the bridge cannot honor claims against the original asset.
  • Operational risk: Congestion, attacks, software failures, or maintenance can delay transfers.

A well-designed rollup does not make an unsafe third-party bridge safe. Before depositing a meaningful amount, check which bridge the application uses, whether it is the network’s native bridge, what assets it supports, and whether withdrawals have a trust-minimized route.

Why rollup fees fell after Dencun

Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade activated EIP-4844, also called Proto-Danksharding, in March 2024. It introduced blob-carrying transactions intended primarily for rollup data.

Blobs are temporary data attached to Ethereum blocks. They are not directly available to EVM execution and are pruned after a protocol-defined period—approximately 18 days under the documented parameter—while commitments remain available for verification. This lowered the cost of publishing rollup data and helped many L2s reduce transaction costs.

It did not create a permanent fixed fee. Your final cost can still depend on:

  • Ethereum’s blob market and congestion;
  • the L2’s execution fee;
  • whether the transaction uses calldata rather than blobs;
  • sequencer pricing;
  • proof-generation and infrastructure costs; and
  • the complexity of the transaction.

As Ethereum expands blob capacity, including through PeerDAS in the Fusaka upgrade, rollups may gain more data-availability capacity. That improves the environment for rollups; it does not turn sidechains into L2s or remove the need to assess individual projects.

Other networks that are not ordinary rollups

Validiums

A validium uses validity proofs but keeps transaction data outside Ethereum. This can support high throughput and low costs, but users depend on an external data-availability committee or mechanism to keep the information accessible.

Plasma

A Plasma design uses a separate chain anchored to Ethereum and relies on mechanisms such as fraud proofs or specialized exit procedures. Because transaction data is not published to Ethereum in the same way as a rollup, data availability and the ability to exit safely are central concerns.

State channels

State channels allow a defined group of participants to transact offchain and settle the result through Ethereum contracts. They can work well for repeated interactions among known participants but are not the general-purpose design used by most modern L2 networks.

What this means for your money

For everyday users, the network label is less useful than the specific risks attached to a transaction. A cheap transaction can still expose you to a bridge failure, an unsupported token, a centralized sequencer, or a smart-contract exploit.

  1. Check the network in your wallet. Confirm that the receiving application supports the exact chain you selected. Sending USDC on one network to an address or exchange deposit system expecting another network can make recovery difficult or impossible.
  2. Check the bridge. Prefer the network’s documented native bridge when appropriate, and verify the URL from official documentation rather than a search advertisement or social-media link.
  3. Keep gas money on the destination network. A transaction on an L2 or sidechain generally requires that network’s gas token. Arriving with only bridged stablecoins may leave you unable to approve, swap, or withdraw.
  4. Test with a small amount. A small transfer can confirm that the wallet, bridge, destination address, and exchange deposit process all work before you risk a larger balance.
  5. Understand withdrawal timing. An optimistic rollup’s native withdrawal may involve a challenge period. A fast third-party bridge may shorten the wait by taking on additional liquidity, trust, or smart-contract risk.
  6. Do not treat a wallet confirmation as Ethereum finality. A sequencer may display a quick confirmation, but settlement and withdrawal finality depend on the L2’s proof system and Ethereum’s acceptance of the relevant state update.

A practical checklist for comparing networks

Before using an Ethereum-connected network, ask these questions:

  1. Where is the transaction data stored?
  2. Can an independent party reconstruct the network’s state from data available on Ethereum?
  3. Who verifies state correctness: Ethereum-enforced contracts, a separate validator set, or a data-availability committee?
  4. Who controls transaction ordering?
  5. Who can upgrade the contracts, and are upgrade keys protected by a timelock or multisignature arrangement?
  6. How long do withdrawals take?
  7. Is there a trust-minimized escape route if the sequencer or operator stops cooperating?
  8. Which bridge will hold, mint, or release the asset?
  9. What gas token and minimum balance will you need for future transactions?

Network dashboards and project documentation can help, but do not rely only on a “TVL” ranking or a fee comparison. A large balance deposited on a network does not prove that its bridge, operators, upgrade process, or data-availability design fits your risk tolerance.

FAQ

Is an Ethereum Layer 2 safer than a sidechain?

A rollup-style Layer 2 generally derives important security and data-availability properties from Ethereum, while a sidechain relies on its own validators and consensus. That does not make every L2 equally safe: upgrade keys, centralized sequencers, proof systems, bridge contracts, and withdrawal mechanisms still matter.

Are Layer 2 transactions final immediately?

Not necessarily. A sequencer confirmation can arrive quickly, but settlement and withdrawal finality depend on the network’s design. Optimistic rollups may have a challenge period, while ZK rollups can finalize after a valid proof is verified, subject to the system’s own conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the same token on Ethereum, an L2, and a sidechain?

The token may have the same name but be represented by different contracts on different networks. Check the network, contract address, bridge, and receiving platform before sending funds. A deposit address that supports one network may not support another.

Why are some L2 transactions so cheap?

L2s batch many transactions and publish compressed data to Ethereum. EIP-4844 blobs reduced the cost of publishing rollup data, although fees still vary with Ethereum’s blob market, the L2’s execution costs, transaction complexity, and the network’s pricing.

The Bottom Line

Layer 2s and sidechains can both reduce Ethereum transaction costs, but they do so with different security models. A rollup-style L2 publishes important data to Ethereum and uses fraud or validity proofs; a sidechain operates with its own validators and does not automatically inherit Ethereum’s security.

When real money is involved, compare the bridge, withdrawal process, data availability, operators, upgrade controls, and gas requirements—not just the advertised fee. The cheapest route is not always the safest route.
