The best app for splitting bills depends on what you actually need: a quick restaurant calculator, a shared record of who paid what, or a way to collect the money. Those are different jobs, and choosing the wrong type can leave you with accurate balances but no convenient way to get paid.

Splitwise is the strongest all-purpose choice for roommates, couples, trips, and recurring shared expenses. Venmo Groups works well when everyone already uses Venmo. tricount is simple for one-currency trips, while Settle Up handles offline use and more complicated arrangements. For a single restaurant check, use Plates by Splitwise rather than creating a long-term expense group.

First decide what “splitting a bill” means

Bill-splitting apps generally fall into three categories:

  1. Calculators: divide one restaurant check among several people, including tax, tip, and shared dishes.
  2. Shared ledgers: track expenses over time and calculate who owes whom.
  3. Payment apps: send requests or transfer money, but may not maintain a useful history of shared expenses.

Most shared-ledger apps do not make everyone pay the merchant directly. If one person pays a $180 hotel bill, the app records that payment, calculates each person’s share, and shows who should reimburse the person who paid. The actual repayment may happen through Venmo, PayPal, bank transfer, cash, or an in-app payment feature where available.

Best apps for splitting bills

App Best for Important limitation
Splitwise Roommates, trips, couples, and ongoing shared expenses Free accounts are limited to four expenses per day
Venmo Groups U.S. groups already using Venmo Everyone needs Venmo for the smoothest experience
tricount Temporary travel groups Each tricount supports one currency
Settle Up Offline use and complicated expense structures Repayment may still need to happen elsewhere
Plates by Splitwise One itemized restaurant bill It is not a long-term expense ledger
PayPal Bill Split Sending payment requests It is not a full shared-expense history

Splitwise: best general-purpose option

Splitwise is designed to keep a running record of shared expenses. You can record who paid, choose the participants, and split the cost equally or assign different amounts. Its debt-simplification feature reduces the number of repayments needed. Instead of requiring every person to settle every original expense, it can calculate a simpler payment path.

For example, if Alex owes Jordan $30 and Jordan owes Casey $30, the app may reduce that to Alex paying Casey rather than requiring two separate transactions.

How to add and settle an expense

  1. Open the relevant group or friendship.
  2. Tap Add bill.
  3. Enter the amount, payer, participants, and split.
  4. Tap Save.
  5. When money changes hands, use Settle up to record the repayment.

A settlement can represent cash or a payment made through another service. Recording a settlement in Splitwise does not, by itself, move money.

Splitwise’s free limit

Free Splitwise accounts currently allow up to four expenses per day. That restriction is easy to miss if you have read older recommendations describing the free version as unlimited. Splitwise Pro removes the limit and also lists features such as receipt scanning and itemization, currency conversion, expense search, charts, default split settings, transaction import in the U.S., and an ad-free experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a free user reaches the daily limit, Splitwise’s documented workaround is for another group member to add the expense and select the affected person as the payer. On the expense form, tap the “you” part of the “Paid by you and split equally” line to change the payer.

When Splitwise can transfer money

Splitwise Pay is not universally available. Its current rollout is limited to eligible users and U.S. residents. Where the feature appears, the app shows a wallet icon in the upper-left corner and a Splitwise Pay tab on the Account page. Enrollment requires identity information and a connected U.S. bank account.

For most users, Splitwise remains a record of informal debts rather than a payment account. Its terms also place restrictions on PayPal integration, including U.S. residency, U.S. recipients, U.S. dollars, and a stated $500-per-week limit. Do not assume that a payment option visible to one Splitwise user will be available to everyone.

Venmo Groups: convenient if your group already uses Venmo

Venmo Groups combines expense tracking with Venmo payment requests. It is a practical choice for a U.S. group splitting rent-related purchases, a vacation rental, or a series of meals when everyone is already active on Venmo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to create a Venmo group

  1. Open the Venmo app and go to the Me tab.
  2. Tap Create a Group below your profile picture.
  3. Tap Get started.
  4. Enter a group name, choose an emoji, and add members.

If you already belong to a group, use the Groups tile on the Me tab and then choose Create a group. Venmo allows up to 30 people in a group. Expenses are split equally by default, but you can edit individual amounts.

How to see balances and mark payments

Open Me > Groups, select the group, and tap Pay at the top of the activity feed to see what is owed. If someone repays outside Venmo, open the group, choose Group summary, open the Members tab, tap Mark as paid, and confirm.

For an eligible purchase already recorded in Venmo, use Me > Transactions, select the purchase, and tap Split. You can select participants, add a tip or surcharge, adjust individual amounts, review the requests, and send them.

A request is not the same as a completed payment. The recipient must accept the request before the money is transferred to the payer’s Venmo account. Pending requests are under Me > Transactions > Pending.

Venmo privacy warning

Venmo’s ordinary payment settings include Public, Friends only, and Private. However, group activity is visible to other members of the group regardless of each person’s individual payment privacy setting. Do not use a Venmo Group for expenses you expect to keep private from the rest of that group.

tricount: simple for trips

tricount is a straightforward shared ledger for vacations and other temporary groups. To start one, open the app, tap the central + sign, and add or adjust participants. To add an expense, open the tricount, tap +, and enter the expense details.

Expenses are equal by default. Tap Equally in the Split area to customize each participant’s share. A tricount supports up to 50 people, including its creator.

The major limitation is currency: one tricount supports only one currency. A trip using dollars, euros, and pounds may require separate tricounts or manual conversion. That makes tricount less suitable for a multinational trip unless everyone agrees to convert expenses into one currency as they go.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To delete an expense, open the tricount, long-press the expense, and choose Delete. Removing a participant currently requires Android: open the tricount, use the top-right menu, choose Edit, tap the X beside the participant, and select Save. The participant cannot be removed while referenced by an open expense.

Settle Up: good for offline and unusual splits

Settle Up supports iOS, Android, Windows, and the web, and its current listing says it works offline. It is useful when a group has more complicated arrangements than a simple equal split, including:

Plates by Splitwise: best for one restaurant check

Plates is a separate free Splitwise app for a single restaurant bill. It supports up to 10 people, lets you assign individual dishes, handles shared appetizers, and calculates tax and tip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it when the problem is “Who had which items on this check?” It is not the right tool for tracking a weekend away, recurring roommate expenses, or a running balance between friends. For those situations, use a ledger such as Splitwise or tricount.

PayPal: best for straightforward payment requests

PayPal’s bill-splitting workflow focuses on requesting money. On the web, the documented path is Pay & Get Paid > Get Paid > select the people > Split a bill. Enter the amount, and PayPal creates a money request for each person.

PayPal also supports payment links in the app. The workflow begins in the Send/Request tab, where you choose the link option, enter the amount, review the details, and share the link.

PayPal is useful when you already know the amount each person should pay. It is less useful when you need a detailed record of who paid for meals, transportation, lodging, and other expenses over several days.

How to choose the right app

  1. For roommates or recurring household costs: choose Splitwise. It is built around an ongoing group and can simplify the final repayments.
  2. For a U.S. friend group already using Venmo: choose Venmo Groups, but make sure everyone understands the group-visibility rules.
  3. For a one-currency vacation: choose tricount for a simple temporary ledger.
  4. For offline use or weighted shares: choose Settle Up.
  5. For one itemized restaurant check: choose Plates by Splitwise.
  6. For sending a few payment requests: choose PayPal if you do not need a detailed expense ledger.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a balance with a payment: an app may say someone owes $24 without collecting it.
  • Splitting tax and tip incorrectly: on restaurant bills, check whether the app applies tax and tip proportionally or lets you assign them manually.
  • Using equal shares when people consumed different amounts: itemize meals or edit individual amounts before sending requests.
  • Ignoring currency restrictions: tricount’s one-currency design can create errors on international trips.
  • Assuming every person has the same features: payment rollouts, regional availability, and account tiers can differ.
  • Leaving expenses unconfirmed: agree on what counts as a shared expense and add a note or receipt while the transaction is still fresh.
  • Settling too often: for a trip or household, recording expenses first and settling once can reduce fees, confusion, and unnecessary transfers.

A simple system that prevents disputes

  1. Create the group before the first shared purchase.
  2. Record each expense on the day it occurs.
  3. Identify the payer accurately; do not assume the person entering the expense paid it.
  4. Use unequal splits for personal items and shared items.
  5. Add a short description, such as “groceries,” “airport taxi,” or “Friday dinner.”
  6. Review the balance before the group ends or the roommate moves out.
  7. Use the app’s settle or mark-as-paid function only after the repayment is actually made.

A shared ledger is only as accurate as the entries in it. The app can simplify arithmetic and repayment instructions, but it cannot decide whether an expense was fair or whether a payment really happened.

FAQ

What is the best app for splitting bills with friends?

Splitwise is the best general-purpose choice for ongoing expenses, trips, roommates, and debt simplification. Venmo Groups may be more convenient when everyone is already using Venmo, while Plates is better for a single itemized restaurant bill.

Do bill-splitting apps automatically send money?

Usually not. Many apps calculate balances and record settlements, while the actual payment happens through cash, a bank transfer, Venmo, PayPal, or another service. Splitwise Pay is available only to eligible users in its current U.S. rollout.

Can I split a restaurant bill by individual dishes?

Yes. Plates by Splitwise is designed for itemized restaurant checks and supports individual dishes, shared items, tax, and tip for groups of up to 10 people. Venmo can also split some eligible purchases and lets you adjust individual amounts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which bill-splitting app works with multiple currencies?

Check the app before an international trip. tricount currently supports one currency per tricount, so a trip involving multiple currencies may require separate tricounts or manual conversion. Splitwise Pro lists currency conversion as a feature.

The Bottom Line

Choose Splitwise for an ongoing shared-expense ledger, Venmo Groups when your U.S. group already uses Venmo, tricount for a simple one-currency trip, and Settle Up for offline or complicated splits. Use Plates by Splitwise for one itemized restaurant check and PayPal when you mainly need to send payment requests. Before choosing, confirm the app’s limits, currency support, privacy rules, and whether it actually transfers money or merely records who owes it.
