White elephant is a gift exchange in which guests take turns opening a wrapped present or stealing one that has already been opened. There is no universal official rule set, so the host should state the spending limit, gift expectations, and steal rules before the game begins. A two-steal limit is a simple default.
How to play a white elephant gift exchange
Agree on the rules before guests arrive or include them in the invitation. Each participant brings one wrapped gift, and numbered slips determine turn order. The first player opens a gift; each later player may open an unopened gift or steal an eligible opened one.
- Set expectations. Tell guests the spending cap, any theme, whether gifts should be funny, useful, or both, and the limit on steals.
- Collect and number gifts. Ask each participant to bring one wrapped gift. Place the gifts together and have players draw numbers to establish the order.
- Start with player one. The first player chooses and opens a gift.
- Continue in turn order. On each turn, choose an unopened gift to open or steal an eligible opened gift. If your gift is stolen, choose again from the unopened gifts or another eligible gift.
- End the game clearly. When the final wrapped gift has been opened, player one may get a final choice, if that rule was announced.
Before play, clarify whether immediate steal-backs are allowed and when a gift becomes frozen and can no longer be taken. These details vary by group; they are not universal rules.
Choose a steal limit that fits the group
A two-steal limit per gift is a straightforward default: after the second steal, that gift is frozen. For a shorter game, the host can set a one-steal limit and use a brief decision timer. For young children or a group that wants to avoid involuntary exchanges, use a no-steal version in which everyone opens a new gift on their turn. These are host-selected variations, not official standards.

What makes a good white elephant gift?

In a mixed group, aim for broad usefulness rather than a gift tied to one person’s private tastes; avoid items that are deliberately unpleasant, overly personal, or fragile.
- Funny or useful: A novelty item can make the exchange entertaining; a practical gift may draw more interest. A gift that manages both can suit a wider range of guests.
- Consumable or reusable: Chocolate or a snack bundle is easy to share, but check for allergies and dietary restrictions. A blanket or tabletop game can be used again.
- Theme and audience: Choose for the group and the announced theme, not just for the person you hope will end up with it.
- Budget and presentation: Stay within the stated cap. A small, coordinated bundle can feel intentional without requiring an expensive single item.

How to make hosting easier
- Put the spending limit, theme, and key rules in the invitation so guests know what to bring.
- Prepare numbered slips before the exchange and explain the steal limit before the first turn.
- Keep a spare wrapped gift available in case someone forgets to bring one.
- For a faster game, announce a short decision timer and a one-steal limit; for a gentler game, remove stealing altogether.
Where did the white elephant gift exchange come from?
The phrase “white elephant” means something that is valuable but burdensome. The familiar story that the King of Siam gave costly sacred elephants to disfavored courtiers to ruin them is a legend, not established history. HISTORY traces the expression to Southeast Asia and identifies an 1851 letter by G.E. Jewsbury as an early written reference to the idiom.
HISTORY’s December 4, 2025 account describes American holiday “swap parties” in newspaper reports from the 1890s, where people traded items without seeing them first. By 1911, such gatherings were commonly called white elephant parties. As HISTORY journalist Joseph Bennington-Castro puts it, “The term was popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the emergence of American holiday ‘swap parties.’”
