Electronic Arts is no longer publicly traded: a consortium comprising Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners completed its acquisition of EA on August 4, 2026. That changes who owns the company and how it is financed, but it does not by itself prove that EA’s games, staffing, budgets, or creative control will change.
Who owns EA now, and when did the deal close?
EA said the acquisition by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners closed on August 4, 2026, following shareholder approval at a special meeting on December 22, 2025. The European Commission described the transaction as PIF’s acquisition of sole control of EA through AcquireCo. EA shares ceased trading and are to be delisted from NASDAQ, so EA is no longer a publicly traded company. Electronic Arts’ closing announcement; European Commission decision.
The ownership context is broader than EA alone. The European Commission noted that PIF-controlled Savvy Games Group owns Scopely and ESL FACEIT Group, among other interests. That portfolio context does not establish how EA’s individual game, staffing, or business decisions will be made.
What did shareholders receive, and how was the buyout financed?
EA said shareholders were to receive $210 in cash for each share held at closing. The transaction was announced at an enterprise value of approximately $55 billion. EA’s announcement described approximately $36 billion in equity investment and $20 billion in committed debt financing, of which $18 billion was expected to be funded at closing. For scale, EA reported approximately $7.5 billion in GAAP net revenue for fiscal year 2026. That is a company-reported historical figure, not a forecast of future revenue or cash available for debt payments. EA’s fiscal year 2026 results.
Why could private ownership and debt change EA’s incentives?
Less pressure to report to public shareholders
A privately held EA will no longer face the same public-company reporting cycle and listed-shareholder scrutiny. The Associated Press described one possible effect as more freedom from public-market pressure. That could give owners and management room to pursue longer-term investments, but it does not guarantee that they will do so or that those investments will succeed. Debt can make cost and cash-flow choices more important
The announced $20 billion in committed debt financing gives observers a reason to watch how the company manages spending and cash flow. AP also reported the possibility that debt could increase pressure for layoffs or other cost reductions. Neither the financing announcement nor that analyst interpretation confirms a plan to cut jobs, reduce game budgets, or change development schedules.
The two forces can point in different directions: private ownership may allow patient investment, while debt may strengthen incentives to control costs. The deal’s structure alone cannot tell players or employees which effect will dominate.

What have EA and the new owners actually promised?
In its August 4 closing release, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said the company and its new owners would “invest boldly, accelerate innovation, and build the next generation of games and experiences.” PIF Deputy Governor Turqi Alnowaiser described entertainment and sports as strategic areas for the fund. Silver Lake CEO Egon Durban said the consortium intended to invest heavily in EA’s growth, including exploring how AI could enhance game development and player experience. EA’s closing announcement.
These are statements of intent, not evidence that spending has increased, new games are in development, or AI has been deployed in a particular way. EA’s release cautions that statements about transaction benefits are forward-looking and are not guarantees of future performance.

Will EA change its games, jobs, AI use, or creative control?
That remains unknown. EA develops and publishes console, PC, and mobile games, including Apex Legends, Battlefield, EA SPORTS FC, Madden NFL, and The Sims. The ownership change affects the company behind those franchises; the closing announcement does not establish a change to their release cadence, quality, monetization, creative direction, or budgets. Nor does the buyout establish layoffs or a particular approach to AI. To assess whether EA is becoming materially different, look for comparable evidence after the closing date rather than relying on the deal announcement alone:
- Investment and operating priorities: whether spending, project approvals, or strategic priorities change.
- Staffing and costs: documented hiring, layoffs, or other cost decisions.
- Games and franchises: changes in release cadence, franchise strategy, or game quality.
- AI: specific uses in production or player-facing features, rather than general ambitions.
- Portfolio independence: evidence of how EA’s decisions relate to PIF’s wider gaming interests.
- Financial performance: comparable results and disclosed information about debt servicing.
EA SPORTS FC is one of the franchises in the portfolio; buying a game is a consumer purchase, not an investment in EA.
