Why can’t I see the full item description in the eBay app?
There are several different symptoms that can look alike: a shortened summary, text cut off before the end, or a description that appears blank. eBay UK explains that mobile item pages may show a “mobile description summary” generated automatically from the full description. That means the app’s shorter view does not, by itself, show that the seller deleted the rest of the listing.

eBay’s UK seller guidance says descriptions under 800 characters using basic HTML, CSS, or text-only formatting display in full on mobile. Separately, eBay’s developer documentation says longer mobile descriptions may be cut off or show incomplete details. These are platform-specific statements, not a guarantee that every marketplace or app version will display every listing identically. eBay UK’s mobile listing guidance and eBay’s Trading API documentation describe the behavior.
How to tell whether the description is truncated or truly blank
- Open the same listing in three places: the eBay app, a mobile browser, and a desktop browser. Compare whether any description appears, whether it is shorter, and where it ends. eBay recommends checking a listing on a phone; sellers can also preview a mobile layout with Chrome Device Mode. If the full text appears in another view but not the app, that points toward a mobile presentation or app-view difference, but does not prove its cause. eBay UK’s seller guidance
- Check whether only part of the text appears. A shortened summary or abrupt ending is consistent with eBay’s documented mobile description behavior, particularly for longer content. Note the listing’s marketplace and avoid assuming that the UK page’s under-800-character guidance applies identically everywhere.
- Check whether the description is absent everywhere. If it is blank in the app, mobile browser, and desktop view, the issue may be with the listing content or its rendering rather than only the app. A buyer can ask the seller to clarify the item details before purchase. Sellers should inspect their listing in the relevant marketplace and correct any missing or inaccurate content.
What sellers can do about a cut-off mobile description
Keep essential facts near the start
Put the most important item information where a shorter mobile view is likely to show it: what the item is, its condition, included accessories, and material limitations or defects. This helps buyers understand the listing even when they do not see every paragraph immediately.

Simplify formatting and preview the listing
eBay’s mobile listing guidance recommends basic HTML, CSS, or text-only formatting for descriptions under 800 characters to display in full on mobile. Preview the listing on a phone or with Chrome Device Mode, then remove unnecessary formatting if it causes the content to display poorly. The developer documentation describes a way to designate a mobile snippet of up to 800 characters using a schema.org Product div and a span with property="description"; its formatting rules and availability are limited, so sellers should consult that documentation rather than assume the method works for every marketplace.

Keep the listing accurate and consistent
eBay requires descriptions to be accurate and related to the item. It also says the condition should match across the title, description, and item specifics. Review those fields together when correcting a listing; policy violations can result in removed content, warnings, restrictions, or account suspension. eBay’s listing policy
One specific blank-description issue in eBay’s advanced listing tool
eBay documents a narrow issue in which LanguageTool can make a description appear blank in its advanced listing tool when the description HTML contains an lt- prefix. If you are a seller and the description is blank in that tool after editing it, inspect the HTML and follow eBay’s instructions to remove the affected markup. Should you update or reinstall the eBay app?
Checking for an app update is a reasonable diagnostic step if the app is behaving unexpectedly. However, eBay’s general app help recommends updating or reinstalling for launch problems; it does not say those steps fix a missing item description. The most useful next step is to identify whether the text is summarized, truncated, blank only in one view, or missing across all views, then follow the seller or buyer steps that fit that symptom.
