Ethereum Mainnet is Ethereum’s base layer; rollups execute transactions on separate layer-2 systems and post data or state updates to Ethereum. Batching can lower user costs, but fees and security depend on the specific rollup’s design and current demand—not simply on the label “L2.”
How Mainnet and rollups differ
| Comparison | Ethereum Mainnet | Rollups |
|---|---|---|
| Where transactions execute | Directly on Ethereum’s layer-1 network, under its consensus rules. | In the rollup’s own layer-2 environment; the system then anchors data or state updates to Ethereum. Ethereum’s rollup documentation describes this model. |
| How correctness is established | Ethereum consensus validates layer-1 blocks. | Optimistic systems allow challenges to results; ZK systems submit validity proofs checked by an Ethereum contract. Implementation details differ. |
| Transaction costs | Users compete for layer-1 blockspace, so congestion can raise fees. | Batching can share data-publication and settlement costs across transactions, but fees also depend on layer-2 demand and the chain’s fee design. |
| Data availability | Layer-1 transaction history is available under Ethereum’s archival model. | Check what data is published to Ethereum and whether the chain uses blobs, calldata, or another arrangement. Data availability differs among systems. |
| Application compatibility | Provides Ethereum’s native EVM environment. | Optimistic rollups are designed for EVM compatibility. ZK EVM compatibility varies by implementation and has involved additional engineering complexity. |
| Operational control | Settlement is governed by Ethereum’s validators and protocol rules. | Sequencers, operators, upgrade mechanisms, bridges, and proof systems can add chain-specific assumptions. |
A rollup is not merely a faster setting for Mainnet: it adds an execution environment and operational components. Nor does every chain associated with Ethereum have the same data-availability or security model. A sidechain, validium, or EVM-compatible chain is not automatically a rollup; the distinction depends on how the system handles data and settlement.
Why rollup fees can be lower—and why they change
A rollup can bundle many transactions and compress the information it publishes, spreading some Ethereum data and settlement expenses across users. Ethereum’s documentation says blob data generally costs less than calldata, but blobs use a separate fee market whose prices depend on demand. Busy conditions on the rollup itself can also affect what users pay.
A transaction’s cost may include its share of data publication to Ethereum, layer-2 execution or operator charges, and, for a ZK system, costs associated with producing and verifying proofs. These components vary by chain and over time. The official sources reviewed here do not provide a directly comparable current fee or throughput figure for Mainnet versus rollups, so a universal savings percentage or speed multiplier would be misleading.

Is Mainnet safer than an L2?
There is no single answer for every L2. A rollup can use Ethereum for settlement and publish data there, but the word “rollup” alone does not establish the security of its bridge, contracts, proof or challenge mechanism, or operational controls. Ethereum’s documentation distinguishes rollups from systems that use different data-availability or security arrangements.
Sequencers and operators matter too. A centralized sequencer can affect transaction ordering even when a system relies on Ethereum for settlement or proofs. For a particular chain, assess its proof or challenge process, bridge contracts, upgrade keys, operator roles, and any forced-inclusion or exit path. Those details determine what users can do if an operator fails or a dispute arises; there is no chain-specific security assessment in this comparison.

Optimistic vs. ZK rollups
Optimistic rollups
Optimistic systems treat posted transaction results as valid by default, while allowing them to be challenged during a dispute period. The challenge process and withdrawal timing depend on the specific chain, so users should check that network’s documented dispute and exit mechanics rather than assume one universal waiting period.
ZK rollups
ZK rollups use validity proofs that an Ethereum contract checks. “Zero knowledge” does not mean that ordinary rollup transactions are private: Ethereum’s documentation says the data needed to reconstruct state is published publicly. A system that uses validity proofs but keeps data elsewhere follows a different data-availability model, such as a validium.

The two approaches therefore involve different proof, finalization, and withdrawal tradeoffs. The names alone do not tell a user which chain is preferable; the specific implementation and its operating assumptions matter.
What to check before using a rollup
- Confirm the network type. Use the chain’s documentation to establish whether it is a rollup, validium, sidechain, or another design. EVM compatibility by itself does not answer this.
- Check where transaction data is available. Find out whether the system publishes data to Ethereum, and whether it uses blobs, calldata, or another arrangement.
- Review proof, challenge, and exit mechanics. For an optimistic rollup, identify its challenge process; for a ZK rollup, check the validity-proof system. Also check how users can withdraw or exit if normal operations are disrupted.
- Inspect control and bridge assumptions. Look for sequencer and operator roles, contract upgrade permissions, bridge design, and any stated decentralization stage.
- Check costs when you transact. Compare the displayed fee for the specific chain and transaction type at that time; fees can change with both layer-1 data demand and local activity.
What Ethereum’s 2026 roadmap says
Ethereum’s roadmap lists Fusaka with a date of December 3, 2025. Its feature description says the blob target is six per block, with a maximum of nine, and presents the higher target as a way to make rollup transactions cheaper. Those are roadmap-page parameters, not a promise that a user’s fee will fall by a particular amount.

Ethereum’s roadmap lists Glamsterdam for Q4 2026 and identifies enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists among its prospective features. The page warns that the scope is not final, so these should be treated as planned rather than guaranteed features.

Blob availability is not permanent archiving
Ethereum’s ZK-rollup documentation describes a protocol obligation to serve blob data for roughly 18 days. That is a minimum serving period, not a deletion deadline and not a guarantee that blobs remain permanently available as archival history. Users evaluating a chain should distinguish its blob-serving arrangements from long-term data storage.
