Was Eidos-Montréal working on a Legacy of Kain reboot?
According to an Insider Gaming report published December 3, 2025, yes. The outlet said former Eidos-Montréal employees’ CVs indicated work on a dark-fantasy action RPG intended to revive an established vampire franchise. Insider Gaming reported that it confirmed the game was a Legacy of Kain soft reboot, internally known as P16.
This was not an official project announcement. The project description and its reported status relied on the outlet’s reporting, former employees’ CVs, and unnamed sources; Eidos-Montréal, Embracer, or Crystal Dynamics had not confirmed it.
When was the project cancelled, and what happened to the IP?
Insider Gaming reported that development lasted about a year and that the project was cancelled several years before the article appeared, after Embracer acquired Eidos-Montréal. Sources described some bare-bones gameplay, but the outlet said it was unknown whether Crystal Dynamics subsequently did more work on the franchise. Insider Gaming also reported that the IP returned to Crystal Dynamics; that detail, like the cancellation and development timeline, was not officially confirmed in the material reviewed.

Embracer’s May 2, 2022 acquisition announcement independently listed Legacy of Kain among the acquired franchises. It described Eidos-Montréal as having almost 500 employees across Montréal, Sherbrooke, and Shanghai at that time; that is historical company context, not a current headcount.
Was the Legacy of Kain cancellation part of the layoffs?
According to Insider Gaming’s December 3, 2025 report, no: the project had been cancelled years earlier and was not part of the then-current layoffs. The report stated that the cancelled projects being discussed were old and “not a part of the current layoffs.” That clarification concerns the older project cancellation and the layoffs discussed in December 2025; it does not establish the cause of later workforce decisions.

What layoffs and restructuring were announced?
December 2025: reports of departures and anticipated reductions
A separate Insider Gaming report published December 2, 2025 said at least a dozen former staff had announced departures. It also reported that sources expected additional reductions after the studio’s remaining work concluded. The article said Eidos-Montréal and Embracer had been asked for comment but had not responded by publication. This was reporting about departures and anticipated cuts, not an official announcement of a specific number of layoffs.
March 2026: 124 employees affected
In March 2026, Eidos-Montréal announced a workforce reduction affecting 124 employees and said studio head David Anfossi was leaving, with a transition plan underway. As reproduced by Insider Gaming, the studio attributed the reduction to “changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams.” This is the studio’s stated explanation; the announcement does not establish that the older Legacy of Kain cancellation caused the job losses.

What is established—and what remains unconfirmed?
- Reported, not officially confirmed: Eidos-Montréal’s work on P16, its identity as a Legacy of Kain soft reboot, the approximate development period, its cancellation, gameplay status, and the reported return of the IP to Crystal Dynamics.
- Separately announced: The March 2026 workforce reduction affecting 124 employees and David Anfossi’s departure.
- Not established: A direct causal link between the old project cancellation and the later layoffs, or any current plans for a new Legacy of Kain game.
The distinction matters: a past project cancellation reported by a news outlet is not the same event as a later studio workforce announcement, and the available statements do not connect them as cause and effect.
