A domain name is a small recurring expense, but the wrong registrar can turn it into an expensive one. A low first-year promotion may be followed by a renewal price that is nearly twice as high, while add-ons such as privacy, email, DNS security, and domain protection can change the real cost.

For this comparison, the most important figure is the ongoing renewal price for a standard .com domain—not just the introductory offer. Prices were checked on August 9, 2026, and can change because of registry increases, taxes, currency conversion, payment fees, promotions, and premium-domain pricing.

Quick comparison of the best domain registrars

Registrar Best for Standard .com pricing snapshot Notable features Main drawback
Cloudflare Registrar Lowest predictable long-term cost $10.46 per year at the current registry and ICANN cost, before taxes or payment charges No registrar markup, redacted WHOIS, free DNSSEC Requires Cloudflare nameservers
Porkbun Best overall value $11.08 registration, renewal, and transfer Free privacy, SSL, email forwarding, URL forwarding Some restoration fees are high
Dynadot Domain portfolios and bulk management Varies by TLD, currency, and account tier Bulk tools, aftermarket listings, API access More portfolio-oriented than beginner-oriented
Spaceship Low introductory pricing $8.88 registration sale; $9.98 renewal Transparent registration, renewal, transfer, and ICANN-fee columns Some TLD renewals rise sharply
Namecheap Beginners who want extra services $10.98 standard registration; $18.48 renewal Free privacy for eligible domains, 24/7 support Large gap between registration and renewal pricing
Hover Simple domain and email management $18.99 registration, renewal, and transfer Privacy where supported and email products Higher standard .com price
GoDaddy Auctions and aftermarket domains Check the live renewal-price column Auctions, expired domains, large marketplace Complex pricing and add-on offers
Squarespace Domains Existing Squarespace customers TLD-specific pricing shown in the dashboard Domain, website, commerce, and templates in one account Less compelling as a standalone registrar

Prices are snapshots, not guarantees. A premium domain, country-code extension, tax, or payment method can produce a different checkout total.

1. Cloudflare Registrar: best for at-cost pricing and security

Cloudflare Registrar is the strongest choice if your priority is keeping the long-term registration cost close to the underlying registry cost. It does not add a registrar markup. For a standard .com, the current registry price is $10.26, and the ICANN transaction fee is $0.20, creating an at-cost baseline of $10.46 per year before taxes and other charges.

#1 Best Overall
Anker USB-C Hub, 5-in-1 USB Hub for Laptops, 4K HDMI Multiport Adapter
  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

That price is not permanently frozen. The .com registry fee is scheduled to rise to $10.97 on November 1, 2026, so Cloudflare’s price will also change when its underlying costs change. “At cost” means no Cloudflare markup; it does not mean the registry can never raise its fee.

Cloudflare also includes redacted WHOIS information and free DNSSEC. To register a domain, use Cloudflare dashboard → Register domains → enter domain → Search → Purchase. DNSSEC is available at Manage Domains → select domain → Configuration → Enable DNSSEC.

The trade-off

A domain registered through Cloudflare must use Cloudflare nameservers. You cannot register the domain there while delegating DNS to a different provider. Cloudflare also does not currently support internationalized domain names, including Unicode domains and their xn-- equivalents. Those restrictions make it a poor fit if you need another DNS host or an IDN.

2. Porkbun: best overall value for most people

Porkbun offers one of the clearest combinations of low renewal pricing and useful extras. Its standard .com registration, renewal, and transfer price is currently $11.08 per year, including the listed ICANN and processing fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard .com domains include free WHOIS privacy, Cloudflare-powered DNS management, a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate, up to 20 email forwards, and URL forwarding. That means a basic domain does not require buying several separate privacy or forwarding products.

To inspect what you will pay later, sign in and go to Account → Domain Management → select domain → Details → Renewal Price. This is a better budgeting habit than relying on the price shown in a registration promotion.

The main financial risk is expiration. A .com domain recovered during the Redemption Grace Period carries a $120 restoration fee in addition to the normal renewal price. Restoration pricing varies by registrar and TLD, so do not assume this figure applies everywhere.

3. Dynadot: best for domain portfolios and bulk management

Dynadot is designed for people managing multiple domains rather than someone buying a single name and rarely logging in. Its searchable pricing table separates registration, renewal, and transfer prices for each TLD. Bulk and super-bulk account benefits, prepayment discounts, aftermarket listings, parking and sales tools, and API access can be useful for domain investors or businesses with a large portfolio.

Rank #2
Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Every domain includes free privacy, a website builder, a custom email address, and domain-management tools. For supported TLDs, privacy can be set to Partial or Full.

Useful menu paths include My Domains → Manage Domains → select domain → Action → Privacy Settings for privacy, Action → Renew Options for auto-renewal, and Action → DNS Settings for DNS records.

Dynadot’s weakness is that the price you see can depend on currency and account tier. A promotional or premium TLD may have a very different renewal cost from its registration cost. Check the live pricing table and the checkout total before treating a quote as an annual budget.

4. Spaceship: best for low introductory prices

Spaceship has some of the lowest advertised first-year prices in this group while still showing renewal and transfer prices beside them. Its current .com snapshot is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Registration sale: $8.88
  • Standard registration: $9.66
  • Renewal: $9.98
  • Transfer sale: $9.48
  • ICANN fee: $0.20

Free privacy is available for eligible domains, and the pricing page covers a wide range of extensions. That transparency is useful when comparing a domain that is not a .com.

Watch the renewal column

Cheap registration does not always mean cheap ownership. Spaceship lists .online at $0.98 for registration but $21.38 for renewal, and .shop at $0.70 for registration but $31.05 for renewal. Those are not necessarily bad choices, but they can be costly if you plan to keep the domain for several years.

If a domain reaches redemption, use Domain Manager → select the domain → Restore domain and review the final checkout price. Spaceship lists a $41.40 redemption fee for .com, separate from the normal renewal cost.

5. Namecheap: best for beginners who want a broad service lineup

Namecheap is easy to use and offers more than basic registration. Eligible domains receive free lifetime privacy, BasicDNS, URL and email forwarding, and DNSSEC where supported. It also provides 24/7 support, which may matter more to a first-time domain owner than saving a few dollars.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The current .com pricing shows why promotions need context:

  • Standard registration: $10.98
  • New-customer first-year promotion: $6.79
  • Renewal: $18.48
  • Transfer: $11.48

The new-customer offer is limited to one domain per user or household, applies only to the first year, and excludes premium domains. At $18.48, renewing for five years would cost substantially more than choosing a registrar with an $11 or $12 renewal price.

Manage a domain from Account Dashboard → Domain List → Manage. To enable auto-renewal, toggle Auto-Renew in that screen. You can manage the payment card under Profile → Billing → Payments Cards → Manage.

Namecheap’s expiration rules also vary by extension. Most expired domains remain in the account for about 30 days, but certain TLDs can enter redemption immediately unless they are renewed five or 12 days before expiration, depending on the extension.

6. Hover: best for simplicity and domain email

Hover keeps the product focused: domain registration, straightforward management, and email services. Its .com registration, renewal, and transfer price is currently $18.99 per year, with WHOIS privacy included where supported.

The price is high compared with Cloudflare, Porkbun, Dynadot, and Spaceship, but Hover may be worth considering if simple administration and domain-based email are more valuable to you than minimizing every dollar.

Renewal discounts begin at 10 domains:

Domains in account Annual discount per domain
10–24 $0.25
25–49 $0.50
50–99 $1.00
100–199 $2.00
200–299 $3.00
300–399 $4.00
400 or more $5.00

For one domain, sign in, select it, click Renew, choose the term, and check out. For several domains, use Bulk Actions → Renew or Auto-renew. Hover describes an approximately 34-day standard grace period for most .com, .org, and .net domains; redemption generally adds a $175 fee plus renewal.

7. GoDaddy: best for aftermarket domains and auctions

GoDaddy is less compelling for a routine, low-cost .com registration, but it is one of the best-known places to search for a domain that is already owned, expiring, or being resold. GoDaddy Auctions offers expired-domain auctions, aftermarket listings, search filters, and tools aimed at domain investors.

UGREEN USB C Hub 5 in 1 Multiport USB Adapter 4K HDMI, 100W Power Delivery
  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

Do not estimate GoDaddy’s ownership cost from a registration advertisement. In Domain Portfolio, click the Columns icon, select Renewal Price, click Save, and review the renewal-price column. The displayed amount is for one year and excludes optional products such as Domain Protection and Premium DNS.

Auction risks

  • A GoDaddy Auctions bid is binding and cannot be canceled.
  • An offer expires if it is not accepted or countered within seven days.
  • An expired-domain auction can stop if the original registrant renews the domain.
  • Expired-domain and valued-priced auctions require a GoDaddy Auctions membership for bidding.

GoDaddy provides free privacy for eligible domains and automatically applies transfer lock to most domains, but availability depends on the TLD.

8. Squarespace Domains: best for existing Squarespace users

Squarespace Domains makes sense when the website, domain, templates, commerce tools, and administration are already staying inside Squarespace. The convenience of one dashboard can outweigh a small pricing difference, especially for a business owner who does not want to coordinate a separate registrar and website platform.

Squarespace shows the domain’s renewal date and renewal price in the dashboard after connection. Pricing is TLD-specific, so check the exact extension rather than assuming a .com price applies to everything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a domain that will point to an independently hosted WordPress site, online store, or other platform, Squarespace is harder to justify on convenience alone. Cloudflare, Porkbun, Dynadot, Spaceship, or Namecheap generally provide more registrar-focused pricing and management options.

How to choose a registrar without overpaying

  1. Look up the renewal price. Put the renewal amount next to the registration price before buying.
  2. Check the total for your actual TLD. A .com, .ai, .co, country-code domain, and premium name can have completely different pricing.
  3. Confirm privacy eligibility. “Free WHOIS privacy” is not universal; registry rules can prevent it for some extensions.
  4. Price the second year and the fifth year. For example, a $6.79 first-year Namecheap promotion followed by an $18.48 renewal is more expensive over time than an $11.08 annual price.
  5. Turn on auto-renewal carefully. Use a current payment method and calendar reminders, but check whether the registrar will charge for add-ons at the same time.
  6. Understand redemption fees. Missing an expiration date can cost tens or hundreds of dollars beyond the standard renewal.
  7. Check DNS requirements. Cloudflare’s low price comes with a mandatory Cloudflare nameserver requirement.
  8. Separate ordinary and premium domains. A premium name may have a registry-set registration or renewal price, and ordinary promotions usually do not apply.

Domain transfers: common reasons they fail

Moving a domain to a cheaper registrar is not always immediate. Before initiating a transfer, check that:

  • The domain is unlocked and does not have clientTransferProhibited.
  • You have a valid authorization or EPP code.
  • The domain was not registered or transferred within the previous 60 days.
  • DNSSEC has been disabled if the losing registrar requires it.
  • The domain is not in redemptionPeriod, pendingDelete, clientHold, or serverHold.
  • The new registrar supports the TLD.
  • A recent registrant-information change has not triggered a transfer lock.

Cloudflare adds a special requirement for transfers in: the domain must first be active on Cloudflare’s network and use Cloudflare nameservers before the authorization code can be submitted.

What changed for domain buyers in 2026?

The biggest predictable change is the scheduled .com registry increase from $10.26 to $10.97 on November 1, 2026. Registrars may pass through that increase directly or add their own margin. The same principle applies to other extensions: registry pricing, taxes, and promotional policies can change during the life of a domain.

That is why a registrar comparison should not treat the cheapest advertised first year as the best deal. The meaningful cost is the renewal price multiplied across the years you expect to keep the name, plus privacy, email, DNS, transfer, and possible recovery costs.

FAQ

Which domain registrar is cheapest in 2026?

Cloudflare Registrar is generally the cheapest for a standard .com over the long term because it charges the registry cost plus applicable fees without a registrar markup. Porkbun is close behind at $11.08 per year and includes several useful services. Prices can change, especially after the scheduled .com registry increase on November 1, 2026.

Is it better to buy a domain for one year or several years?

Buying several years can protect against forgetting to renew and may lock in the current registrar price for the purchased term, but it does not necessarily lock in future renewal prices. Compare the total checkout cost and read the registrar’s renewal terms before prepaying.

Does every registrar include free WHOIS privacy?

No. Privacy depends on the TLD and registry rules. Cloudflare, Porkbun, Dynadot, Namecheap, Hover, Spaceship, and GoDaddy offer privacy for many eligible domains, but some country-code and specialty extensions do not support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if a domain expires?

Most domains have a registrar grace period during which normal renewal may still be possible. After that, the domain can enter redemption, where a restoration fee is added to the renewal price. The length of the grace period and restoration fee vary by registrar and TLD.

The Bottom Line

For most individual buyers and small businesses, Porkbun is the best balance of price, renewal predictability, privacy, and included features. Choose Cloudflare Registrar if minimizing markup and using Cloudflare DNS are your priorities. Dynadot is better for portfolios, Spaceship is attractive when its renewal price remains low, and Namecheap is a practical beginner option if you accept its higher renewal cost. Use GoDaddy mainly for auctions and aftermarket inventory, Hover for a simple domain-and-email setup, and Squarespace Domains when your website already runs on Squarespace.

Whichever registrar you choose, save the renewal price, enable renewal reminders or auto-renewal, and check the exact TLD before paying. The cheapest domain is the one you can keep renewing without surprises.
