A March 28, 2025 report said an unnamed large US retailer expected its Nintendo Switch 2 preorder allocation to sell out on the first day. That was the retailer’s reported expectation—not a guaranteed sellout, a published inventory figure, or current buying advice. Nintendo’s current US product page is the place to check present system and bundle information.

What the retailer documents reportedly said

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported on March 28, 2025, that the outlet had reviewed internal emails and documents from a large US retailer that was not named. According to the report, the retailer expected to sell through its Switch 2 preorder allocation on the first day because Nintendo’s allocation was limited. The report gave no unit count or numerical estimate of the likelihood of a sellout. Read the March 28, 2025 report.

The reported plan anticipated an April 9, 2025 preorder opening, one week after the planned Switch 2 Direct, and a June 2025 launch. The retailer was also said to be considering “Pre-Order Coming Soon” messaging after the Direct, a countdown ending April 9, and an exclusive collectible coin for customers who preordered. These details were attributed to the retailer documents; the underlying documents were not reproduced, and the retailer was not identified.

Did Switch 2 pre-orders sell out?

The report described a forecast, not a confirmed outcome. It did not establish how many consoles the retailer received, whether its allocation actually sold out, or whether the collectible coin was ultimately offered. The unnamed source and lack of a published inventory figure mean the report cannot support a precise estimate of preorder availability or sellout odds.

Why the report mentioned a different date in Canada

Insider Gaming also noted that a Best Buy Canada listing had suggested April 2, 2025 preorders before it was removed. The outlet said it could not determine whether the listing was a mistake. That listing did not resolve the uncertainty around the US retailer’s reported plan, and neither date should be used as current purchasing guidance.
