If a paper check has to reach someone quickly, use the delivery date and time quoted for your exact route—not the word “overnight” on a service name. FedEx offers several next-business-day options with different delivery windows; USPS Priority Mail Express currently publishes a 1–3-day range. If the payee accepts electronic payment, that can avoid postal transit altogether.
Choose the fastest option that fits the deadline
First confirm whether the recipient requires a physical check. If not, an electronic payment may remove the uncertainty of mail transit. Deluxe describes its eChecks as digitally delivered, with deposit options selected by the recipient; the payee must be able and willing to accept that method. See the Deluxe Payment Exchange FAQ for service details.
If a paper check is required, compare the carrier’s commitment for the specific origin and destination, then check the drop-off cutoff. These are published service windows, not promises that every address qualifies.
| Option | Published timing or feature | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx First Overnight | Next-business-day delivery by 8, 8:30 or 9 a.m. in most areas | Address eligibility, quoted delivery commitment, cutoff, price and guarantee terms |
| FedEx Priority Overnight | Next-business-day delivery by 10:30 a.m. to most businesses in the contiguous U.S. and by noon to most residences | Address eligibility, quoted delivery commitment, cutoff, price and guarantee terms |
| FedEx Standard Overnight | Next-business-day delivery by 5 p.m. to U.S. businesses and by 8 p.m. to residences | Address eligibility, quoted delivery commitment, cutoff, price and guarantee terms |
| USPS Priority Mail Express | USPS currently describes delivery in 1–3 days by 6 p.m., with tracking and a money-back guarantee | Delivery date shown for the shipment, price, proof-of-delivery needs and applicable terms |
FedEx’s windows are service descriptions for most areas, not guarantees for every address. The actual commitment depends on the route and shipment. FedEx says its rates depend on shipment size and weight, destination and requested delivery time. Compare current quotes rather than assuming one carrier is always less expensive. See FedEx’s overnight shipping guide and the USPS Priority Mail Express page.

How to send a check by overnight service
- Confirm the requirement. Ask whether the payee needs a paper check, verify the exact delivery address, and note any deadline or receiving-hours restriction.
- Get a route-specific commitment. Compare the carrier’s quoted service and delivery date or time for your origin and destination. Don’t infer next-morning arrival from a service name.
- Meet the local drop-off cutoff. FedEx says cutoff times vary by location; tender the package by the location’s latest acceptance time for the selected service. Confirm hours and cutoff with the specific drop-off point using FedEx’s overnight guide.
- Select suitable evidence options. Decide whether tracking is enough or whether you need a mailing record, delivery attempt record or recipient signature, and choose available services accordingly.
- Keep the receipt and tracking number. Follow scans through delivery and retain the records with your payment documentation.
Tracking is not the same as proof of a recipient’s signature
USPS Tracking provides status updates and can show the delivery or attempted-delivery date and time. Certified Mail can document mailing and a delivery attempt; adding Return Receipt provides a recipient-signature record under the service’s terms. Choose the evidence level that fits the dispute or recordkeeping risk rather than treating tracking alone as proof of who accepted the envelope. See USPS guidance on insurance and extra services.
When a check-printing service makes sense
A check-printing provider can be useful when a business needs checks produced and mailed without handling each envelope itself. But the provider’s dispatch cutoff is not the check’s delivery time.

Deluxe says Print+Mail requests received by 2 p.m. Central are printed and mailed the same day. It estimates delivery in 3–5 business days to the contiguous 48 states and up to 7 days to Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories. That is not an overnight-arrival option. Check the provider’s current timing, coverage, pricing, security and integration terms before relying on it. Details are on the Deluxe Print+Mail page.

A published money-back guarantee is subject to the carrier’s conditions and exclusions; it does not remove the need to package and tender the shipment correctly or confirm that the route is eligible. FedEx’s U.S. money-back-guarantee page says its listed domestic overnight services are covered for U.S. payors effective February 12, 2026, subject to the Service Guide and exclusions. Review the current FedEx guarantee terms before shipping.
