U.S. wheat production fell sharply in 2026: USDA’s September 30 annual summary puts the crop at 1.53 billion bushels, 23% below revised 2025. The national acreage figures do not show a bump: USDA’s June estimate put all-wheat planted area at 42.7 million acres, down 6% year over year. Drought was a major pressure on winter wheat, but acreage, yield, and production are distinct measures.
How much did U.S. wheat production fall in 2026?
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported 1.53 billion bushels of all-wheat production in 2026, down 23% from the revised 2025 total. The decline reflected both fewer acres harvested for grain and a lower average yield.
| Measure | 2026 figure | Year-over-year change | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-wheat production | 1.53 billion bushels | Down 23% | Total wheat harvested, reported in NASS’s September 30, 2026 annual summary. |
| Area harvested for grain | 31.9 million acres | Down 15% | Acres harvested for grain, not acres initially planted. |
| Yield | 48.1 bushels per acre | Down 10% | Average production per harvested acre. |
The annual totals describe all wheat, not only winter wheat or the hard red winter class. USDA’s September 30, 2026 Small Grains Annual Summary is the source for these production, harvested-area, and yield figures.
Did wheat acreage increase in 2026?
Not in USDA’s national estimate of planted all-wheat area. NASS’s June 30, 2026 Acreage report estimated 42.7 million acres planted to all wheat, 6% fewer than in 2025. Its estimate for winter wheat was 31.5 million acres, down 5% from the prior year.

Planted acreage is not the same as acreage harvested for grain. The June planted-area estimate and September harvested-area total are different measures published at different times. Their difference should not be read as an abandonment figure by itself: crop classes, intended uses, and statistical definitions also matter. The national figures available here therefore do not substantiate an overall acreage increase; they do not rule out an increase in a particular state, wheat class, or later revision.
How did drought affect the crop?
Drought covered a substantial share of the winter-wheat production footprint during the growing season. USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) estimated that 65% of U.S. winter wheat production was in drought areas as of March 31, 2026, compared with 37% on the same date in 2025. That is the share of production located in drought areas—not the share of wheat destroyed or lost.

In its June outlook, ERS said significant drought in major Great Plains hard red winter wheat states resulted in lower yields and higher abandonment. A May 19 Southern Plains update from Drought.gov described impacts in western Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, saying winter wheat yield came up very short and created a billion-dollar production deficit. That is the update’s characterization, not a separately audited loss estimate.
The drought exposure comparison comes from ERS’s April 13, 2026 Wheat Outlook; the Great Plains class-specific assessment and deficit forecast are discussed in the June 15, 2026 Wheat Outlook. Drought conditions and outlook estimates are tied to their stated dates and should not be treated as a final accounting of losses.

What did USDA forecast for hard red winter wheat?
In June, ERS forecast the 2026/27 hard red winter wheat crop to be the smallest since 1957/58. This was a forecast made before NASS published its September annual summary, not a final annual estimate for that wheat class. It cannot be compared directly with the September 1.53-billion-bushel figure, which covers all wheat.
The same June outlook forecast U.S. exports of 775 million bushels for the marketing year. That is a dated forecast, not a reported final export result.

What do the stocks figures say about supply?
NASS reported 1.85 billion bushels of all-wheat stocks on September 1, 2026, 14% below a year earlier. It also reported indicated June–August disappearance of 608 million bushels, down 14% from the same period a year earlier. Stocks are a point-in-time supply measure; disappearance is the amount used or otherwise removed from stocks over a period. These figures add context, but by themselves they do not establish a particular change in grocery prices, food security, or an individual farmer’s finances. The figures are from NASS’s September 30, 2026 Grain Stocks release.

How to read the wheat numbers
- Planted area counts acres planted or intended for planting, as estimated in the June acreage report.
- Harvested area counts acres harvested for grain, reported in the September annual summary.
- Yield is production per harvested acre; in 2026, NASS reported 48.1 bushels per acre for all wheat.
- Production is the total crop volume. It can fall because of lower yield, fewer harvested acres, or both.
- Forecasts and snapshots are not final results. ERS’s June hard red winter forecast and March 31 drought snapshot describe estimates available at those dates, while NASS’s September summary is the newest production result cited here.
