Yes. Vanguard earns revenue by managing and administering its funds, and it may also earn fees from brokerage, advisory and related services. Its investor-owned structure does not mean the business has no income or operating costs. It does mean Vanguard says its ownership model supports a focus on lower fund costs. The available sources establish how Vanguard earns revenue, but do not provide a consolidated net-profit figure for the company.

How does Vanguard make money?

Vanguard funds charge expense ratios to pay for investment management and administration. Those fund expenses are deducted from fund assets and reflected in returns, rather than usually appearing as a separate bill to each investor. A fund’s expense ratio is the cost of running that fund—not Vanguard’s profit margin.

A Vanguard 500 Index Fund annual shareholder report for the year ended December 31, 2025, lists payments to The Vanguard Group for investment advisory services, management and administration, and marketing and distribution. That is a concrete example of a Vanguard fund paying the company for services; it is not a consolidated financial statement for Vanguard as a whole. See the fund’s SEC-filed annual report.

Brokerage, advice and other services

Vanguard also offers brokerage, advisory and retirement services. Depending on the account, investment and transaction, fees may apply. Its U.S. brokerage terms include a $25 account service fee, subject to waiver conditions, and set out online commission terms; certain funds may also charge purchase or redemption fees. Check Vanguard’s current fee schedule and the relevant fund prospectus for the terms that apply to you.

How does Vanguard earn revenue if its funds own it?

Vanguard describes its ownership chain this way: “Vanguard is owned by its funds, which are owned by Vanguard’s fund shareholder clients.” In other words, its funds own Vanguard, and fund shareholders own shares in those funds. Vanguard says this structure supports its focus on lowering costs and reinvesting in products and services. It does not mean that fund shareholders directly hold individually specified shares of the operating company, or that the company has no expenses.

Vanguard’s explanation of its ownership structure is available on its company overview.

Are Vanguard’s low expense ratios its profit?

No. An expense ratio is a fund-level charge used to cover fund expenses. Some of those expenses pay Vanguard for services, while others may cover other fund costs. The expense ratio is not a measure of how much profit Vanguard keeps.

Vanguard and Morningstar reported that, as of December 31, 2025, Vanguard’s asset-weighted average expense ratio for U.S. mutual funds and ETFs was 0.07%. The corresponding asset-weighted U.S. industry average, excluding Vanguard, was 0.44%. These dated comparisons describe fund expenses, not company earnings. Vanguard’s expense-ratio comparison provides the figures and methodology.

Does Vanguard make a profit?

Vanguard earns revenue, but revenue alone does not show whether a company made a net profit. The cited materials explain Vanguard’s sources of revenue and show payments from one fund to the company; they do not establish Vanguard’s consolidated net income for its most recently completed fiscal year. A fund’s expense ratio, or the fact that a fund pays Vanguard, cannot be used by itself to calculate company-wide profit.

For a practical comparison with another investment provider, match the same type of charge and the same date: fund expense ratios against fund expense ratios, account fees against account fees, and advisory fees against advisory fees. Also compare the services included and any waiver conditions.

What to check before investing

  • Review the prospectus for each fund you are considering to see its expense ratio and any transaction-related fees.
  • Check Vanguard’s current brokerage fee schedule for account charges, waivers and commissions applicable to your account.
  • Confirm that fee comparisons use the same geography, product category and measurement date.

The cited fee terms and expense averages are U.S.-oriented; availability and charges can vary by account, fund and geography. Terms can change, so verify the current documents before acting.
