Travelers brought a USB drive, paid to rent or buy a film, and downloaded it for offline viewing. The advertised $3.99 new-release rental was a launch-era price—not a current offer—and the available evidence does not establish that Digiboo kiosks or service remain active.
How the Sea-Tac movie kiosks worked
Digiboo’s Seattle launch put orange touchscreen kiosks around the airport, including in some former payphone locations. GeekWire reported 14 kiosks and a catalog of more than 700 titles at launch, including Hugo and Moneyball. Those figures describe the service in March 2012, not current airport facilities or inventory. (GeekWire, March 23, 2012)
Rather than stream over an airplane’s internet connection, a customer downloaded a movie to personal USB storage at the airport and watched it later. The Seattle launch report specified a USB drive with at least 4 GB of free space and a Windows PC or tablet for playback. First-time use required an internet connection to initialize the service; the kiosk provided connectivity, or the customer could complete that initial connection before arriving. (Los Angeles Times, March 15, 2012)
The proposition was convenience at the airport, not a universally compatible in-flight entertainment system. GeekWire noted that some smartphones and the iPad did not have USB ports. Digiboo’s chief marketing officer Blake Thomas described the idea as making a movie purchase available at the airport without planning ahead; that was the company’s pitch, not independent proof that its service was easier or faster than alternatives.

What a rental cost—and what the terms were
GeekWire’s report on the March 2012 Seattle launch listed these prices and rental terms. They are historical terms and should not be read as present-day pricing or proof of availability. (GeekWire, March 23, 2012)
| 2012 Seattle launch option | Reported price | Reported viewing window |
|---|---|---|
| New-release rental | $3.99 | Start within 30 days; 48 hours to watch after opening |
| Older-title rental | $2.99 | Start within 30 days; 48 hours to watch after opening |
| Purchase | $14.99 | Purchase rather than rental; no rental viewing window stated |
The Los Angeles Times reported that a download took about 30 seconds over USB 3.0 or two to five minutes over USB 2.0. It also quoted airport official Bruce Rineer saying a movie downloaded to his flash drive in about 25 seconds. That was Rineer’s reported firsthand trial, not a controlled performance test; actual time could depend on the drive and file. (Los Angeles Times, March 15, 2012)

Why the 2012 compatibility details matter
The original Seattle workflow was aimed at travelers with USB storage and a Windows computer or tablet. That narrowed its usefulness for people relying only on a phone or an iPad, particularly devices without a compatible USB connection. A customer also needed the required storage and had to account for the first-use internet initialization.
Digiboo later described broader device support, but that belongs to a different point in the service’s history. A February 2013 company release about Boise said movies could be played on Apple devices and Android or Windows phones, tablets, and computers. It announced four kiosks at Boise Airport and more than 800 films; these are company-reported figures for that announcement, not details of the 2012 Sea-Tac launch. How Digiboo’s airport plans changed
Seattle was Digiboo’s first West Coast airport, following a Minneapolis launch. In March 2012, GeekWire reported that Portland was planned next and that the company was evaluating airport trials before considering a broader rollout. Plans reported at the time do not establish that every proposed deployment happened. (GeekWire, March 23, 2012)
In November 2012, Digiboo announced a distribution agreement with Smarte Carte for airport and transit locations and named Minneapolis–St. Paul, Seattle-Tacoma, and Portland as airport markets then in operation. That company announcement is a dated account, not a current list of locations. (Digiboo via PR Newswire, November 1, 2012)

By July 2015, Digiboo was announcing “Digiboo Zones,” a different delivery model: an app-based download over local Wi-Fi in public places rather than the original USB-kiosk workflow. The company said it would begin with 100 locations in the United States and Canada and planned to reach 2,000 within twelve months. It listed $4.99 for new-release rentals and $3.99 for catalog rentals, with 30 days to begin watching and 48 hours after activation. These were announcement details and targets; the release does not establish that the target was met or that the service is available today. (Digiboo via PR Newswire, July 9, 2015)

Digiboo’s Sea-Tac kiosks were a historical option for putting a movie on a USB drive before a flight, with a clearly advertised launch price and rental window. The approach avoided depending on in-flight streaming, but required compatible hardware, storage, and first-use setup. The 2012 prices and airport locations cannot be used to determine what a traveler can buy or use now; the available reporting does not verify a current Digiboo service.
