A gold discovery in China’s Wangu goldfield was reported in November 2024 as potentially the world’s largest, with an estimated 600 billion yuan in gold—about US$83 billion at the conversion reported by Xinhua. That is an estimate of gold in the ground, not money earned or proof of a commercially viable mine. The report gives two different quantity estimates, scoped to different depths, and does not establish a global ranking or a mine’s recoverable value.
Where was the gold deposit found?
The reported discovery is in the Wangu goldfield, Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, China. Xinhua reported on November 21, 2024, that the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province had identified more than 40 gold veins. The account describes gold found through drilling and geological modeling, rather than an operating mine or a completed commercial project. Xinhua’s report
Why are there two different gold estimates?
The figures refer to different depths and should not be treated as competing estimates of the same measured area:
| Reported scope | Gold quantity | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Within 2,000 metres | 300 tonnes | Xinhua’s report associated this quantity with more than 40 detected veins. |
| Within 3,000 metres | More than 1,000 tonnes | A broader estimate reported for the site; Xinhua does not present it as verified recoverable gold. |
The deeper estimate is larger because it covers a greater depth range. Xinhua says the prospecting work used 3D geological modeling and that drilling around peripheral areas also found gold. That indicates exploration beyond the initially described veins, but does not establish how much additional gold is measured or economically extractable.

- GOLD PROSPECTORS CHOICE - The most important tool in the gold prospectors kit is the gold pan; Easy to use and perfect for beginners, casual hobbyists, and experienced prospectors; Holds more fine gold flakes as the pan becomes seasoned
- GET TO THE GOLD FASTER - Process more paydirt in a shorter amount of time with dual riffles; Use the deep ¼” riffles to sift out larger river sediment, sand, and rocks; Use the micro riffles to sift out the finer sediment and black sand to trap the gold
- DESIGNED FOR QUICK & EFFICIENT PANNING - The ⅛” base pan volume increases gold trapping ability and allows more material to be processed per pan; Lightweight to reduce hand fatigue while panning and the gold pan even floats in the water
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND PORTABLE - Easy to transport and fits comfortably into a backpack or large finds bag; Ideal for gold panning around exposed bedrock, inside bends, surging waters, and areas with restricted water flow
- RUGGED DURABILITY - High-impact plastic with the right amount of thickness that won’t rust, corrode, or break easily; Won’t interfere with the use of a magnet; Green colored to reduce eye strain in the bright sunlight and help spot gold flakes and nuggets easier
Is the $83 billion estimate the deposit’s actual value?
No. Xinhua reported an estimated value of 600 billion yuan, which it gave as approximately US$83 billion, for the estimate of more than 1,000 tonnes within 3,000 metres. This is an estimated in-ground value—not revenue, a company valuation, a mine valuation, or a forecast of proceeds after mining. The report does not state its gold-price assumptions or valuation method, or quantify extraction costs, recovery, or the share that could ultimately be sold.
What does the reported ore grade mean?
Xinhua reported that a tonne of ore in the 2,000-metre range contained a maximum of 138 grams of gold, attributing the figure to an expert. “Maximum” matters: it is not an average grade for the deposit and does not describe every tonne of ore. The report also quotes Chen Rulin, an ore-prospecting expert with the Hunan Province Geological Disaster Survey and Monitoring Institute, saying, “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” Visible gold in some cores is a geological observation, not evidence by itself of a mineable deposit.

Has the discovery been proven to be the world’s biggest?
Not by the reporting cited here. Xinhua described the discovery as “superlarge,” while a secondary article used the “world’s biggest” framing. Neither supplies a comparable global ranking method or evidence establishing that the Wangu estimate exceeds all other deposits on a like-for-like basis. It is therefore more precise to call it a discovery reported as potentially the world’s largest, rather than a confirmed global record. The secondary article’s framing

The November 2024 Xinhua report does not provide a formal resource classification, independent technical audit, feasibility study, mine plan, recovery rate, permitting status, or commercial production date. Without those details, the reported tonnage and in-ground estimate cannot establish whether or when the gold could be mined profitably. The figures are discovery-report estimates attributed to the Hunan geological authorities, not an independently audited assessment of commercial reserves.
