Updated August 9, 2026: The RAM price crisis is still active. TrendForce expects overall DRAM contract prices to rise another 13% to 18% in Q3 2026, while retail trackers show some 32GB DDR5 kits selling for several times their 2025 prices. The squeeze is affecting DDR5, DDR4, laptop memory, server DRAM and graphics memory—not just gaming upgrades.

For household budgets, the practical question is whether to buy memory now, wait, or replace an entire computer. The answer depends on compatibility and urgency. Current forecasts do not point to a quick return to normal prices, but they also do not prove that every kit will remain at its August peak through 2027.

RAM price crisis: the latest verified numbers

There are two different price stories in the current market, and they should not be confused.

  • Contract prices: TrendForce forecasts overall DRAM contract prices to increase 13% to 18% quarter over quarter in Q3 2026. Earlier forecasts called for conventional DRAM prices to rise 90% to 95% in Q1 and 58% to 63% in Q2.
  • Retail prices: These are what consumers pay for finished memory kits and can vary sharply by country, retailer, stock level, speed and brand.

A forecast for a 95% increase in conventional DRAM contracts does not mean every retail DDR5 kit rose exactly 95%. Retail pricing also includes module assembly, inventory bought at earlier prices, retailer margins, promotions, shipping, currency movements and, in some cases, opportunistic pricing.

Product or measure Reported August 2026 position What it means
Overall DRAM contracts Forecast up 13%–18% in Q3 2026 The market remains tight, although the rate of increase is slowing.
32GB DDR5-6000 retail kit $399 lowest listed U.S. price on August 6 Tom’s Hardware listed a historical low of $72 for the same capacity category.
32GB DDR4-3200 retail kit $188 lowest listed U.S. price on August 6 DDR4 has not escaped the shortage.
32GB DDR5 kit About $350 starting price in August Comparable kits reportedly sold for roughly $100–$200 in October 2025.

These retail figures are time-stamped snapshots rather than universal prices. A specific kit may be cheaper—or unavailable—depending on the retailer and region.

Why is RAM so expensive?

The main structural driver being cited by suppliers and analysts is demand from AI data centers. Memory manufacturers are directing more production capacity toward HBM and high-capacity server DRAM, products that support AI accelerators and generally offer better returns than ordinary PC memory.

HBM is not desktop RAM and cannot be installed in a normal motherboard. It is a specialized memory technology packaged alongside high-performance processors. However, it uses DRAM manufacturing capacity. When more wafers, packaging capacity and engineering resources are committed to HBM, less supply is available for conventional DDR4 and DDR5 modules.

Cloud-service providers are also signing long-term supply agreements to reserve future memory allocation. That gives suppliers stronger pricing power and reduces the amount of product available on the open market for PC manufacturers, module makers and retailers.

Micron has identified several additional constraints:

  • Limited cleanroom capacity and long construction timelines.
  • Higher conversion ratios required for HBM production.
  • Lower bit output during some process-node migrations.
  • Long lead times before new fabs produce saleable memory at scale.

This is why a new factory announcement does not immediately translate into cheaper RAM at a local electronics retailer.

Could the shortage last until 2028?

Several industry outlooks point to elevated prices well beyond 2026. Samsung has reportedly warned that supply constraints could be more severe in 2027 than in 2026, with tight conditions potentially extending into 2028. TrendForce has also said meaningful capacity expansion is unlikely until late 2027 or 2028. Micron expects DRAM and NAND supply-demand conditions to remain tight beyond calendar 2026.

The cautious interpretation is:

  • Prices may remain elevated through 2027.
  • Meaningful relief depends partly on new capacity arriving in late 2027 or 2028.
  • Prices are not guaranteed to remain at their August 2026 peak for the entire period.

Micron expects first wafer output from its first Idaho fab in mid-2027 and from its second Idaho fab in late 2028. Its broader U.S. investment plan exceeds $250 billion through 2035, but that is a long-term capacity program, not a near-term solution for a computer buyer facing a high price today.

Is DDR4 a cheaper alternative to DDR5?

Sometimes, but not reliably. DDR4 prices have also increased substantially. Tom’s Hardware reported that 32GB DDR4 kits that cost roughly $60–$90 in October 2025 were selling for about $150–$180 by January 2026, with a 32GB DDR4-3200 kit listed at $188 in its August 6 tracker.

For an existing DDR4 computer, buying compatible DDR4 may still be less expensive than replacing the motherboard, processor and memory together. For a new build, deliberately choosing an older DDR4 platform solely to avoid DDR5 pricing can be a false economy: the platform may have a shorter upgrade path, and DDR4 itself is no longer immune to supply pressure.

CXMT is adding supply, but has not fixed consumer prices

China’s CXMT is becoming a meaningful DRAM supplier. Counterpoint estimates put its share at roughly 8% of global DRAM revenue in Q1 2026 and about 9% by bit shipments in a later update, with a projection of 11% by 2028.

CXMT raised approximately 579 billion yuan—about $8.55 billion—in its July 16, 2026 Shanghai STAR Market IPO. The money is intended to support next-generation processes, HBM3 development and capacity expansion.

  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Reports indicate that HP, Asus and Acer have qualified limited quantities of CXMT memory for a small number of notebooks sold in non-U.S. markets. That is not the same as a broad supplier switch. Nor does CXMT automatically mean cheap RAM: a reported 32GB Lexar DDR5-7200 kit using Chinese-made DRAM was listed at 3,999 yuan, or approximately $592, on August 3. Comparable U.S. kits were reported at roughly $585–$700.

Should you buy RAM now or wait?

Use the urgency of the purchase—not headlines about a supposed universal 400% increase—as the deciding factor.

Buy now when the upgrade is necessary

If a computer is unusable, constantly swapping to disk, crashing from insufficient memory or blocking paid work, a reasonably priced compatible kit may be sensible. Current forecasts do not indicate a rapid price collapse before late 2027 or 2028.

“Reasonably priced” does not mean buying the first available listing. Compare several retailers, check the seller, and use price-history tools. A current lowest price may still be far above the product’s historical low.

Wait when the upgrade is optional

If the computer works adequately and the upgrade is mainly for a hoped-for performance improvement, waiting is defensible. Avoid paying an extreme premium for a high-speed or unusual kit that offers little practical benefit for your workload.

Do not replace a whole platform automatically

Replacing a motherboard and CPU to move from DDR4 to DDR5 may cost substantially more than adding RAM to an existing system. Calculate the complete upgrade cost first:

How to avoid an expensive compatibility mistake

  1. Identify the memory type. Check the motherboard or laptop manufacturer’s specifications. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.
  2. Confirm the form factor. Desktop systems normally use UDIMMs; laptops generally use smaller SO-DIMMs. A physically incompatible module will not solve the problem.
  3. Check the maximum supported capacity. Confirm the motherboard or laptop limit, the number of slots and whether a single large module is supported.
  4. Match the kit configuration. Two matched modules are usually preferable to mixing unrelated sticks. Check the rated speed, timings and voltage.
  5. Verify platform support. A kit’s advertised speed may require enabling XMP or EXPO in the firmware, and the processor or motherboard may not support the advertised setting reliably.
  6. Compare like for like. Compare the same total capacity, DDR generation, speed, timings, module count and form factor—not merely the price per gigabyte.

Before ordering, consult the motherboard’s qualified vendor list where available. Also check the return policy: memory that powers on is not necessarily stable under sustained workloads.

Claims about the RAM crisis that need qualification

Claim More accurate version
“All RAM is up 400%.” Some kits have risen three- or four-fold, but the change depends on capacity, speed, brand, region and comparison date.
“DDR4 is unaffected.” DDR4 has also experienced major price increases.
“CXMT fixes the shortage immediately.” CXMT adds supply, but deployment remains limited and its products are not automatically cheaper.
“New U.S. fabs will make RAM cheap this year.” Published schedules put Micron’s first Idaho wafer output in mid-2027 and the second in late 2028.
“HBM is desktop RAM.” HBM is a specialized product for accelerators and competes for manufacturing capacity; it is not a drop-in DIMM.
“A 95% contract-price increase means retail prices rose 95%.” Contract prices and retail kit prices measure different points in the supply chain.

What to watch in the next updates

The most useful signals will be changes in DRAM contract forecasts, retailer inventory, prices for mainstream 16GB and 32GB kits, supplier capacity announcements and evidence that cloud providers’ reservations are easing. Watch the price of an identical kit over time rather than relying on a single viral listing.

A weaker consumer market may slow the rate of increase, as TrendForce currently expects, but weaker demand alone does not remove the capacity limits created by HBM, server memory and the long construction cycle for new fabs.

FAQ

Are RAM prices still rising in August 2026?

The shortage remains active. TrendForce forecasts overall DRAM contract prices to rise 13% to 18% in Q3 2026, although the pace of growth is moderating. Retail prices vary widely by product and location.

Will RAM prices fall in 2027?

Prices may remain elevated through 2027. Industry forecasts point to more meaningful capacity expansion in late 2027 or 2028, but they do not establish that every product will stay at its August 2026 peak or that prices must fall on a specific date.

Is DDR4 cheaper than DDR5 during the shortage?

DDR4 can be the cheaper option for an existing compatible system, but it has also become more expensive. For a new computer, compare the total cost of the platform rather than choosing DDR4 solely because it is older.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy RAM now or wait?

Buy a compatible kit now if insufficient memory is disrupting work or making the system unusable, provided the price is reasonable. If the upgrade is optional, waiting and tracking the price of an identical kit may be sensible. Avoid panic-buying and verify compatibility first.

The Bottom Line

RAM is expensive because manufacturers are prioritizing HBM and server memory for AI infrastructure while new capacity takes years to build. DDR4 is affected as well as DDR5, and CXMT is adding competition without yet restoring low retail prices. If you need memory for a functioning computer, compare exact specifications and buy only at a price you can justify. If the upgrade is optional, keep using the current system and monitor prices—there is no verified near-term return to the bargain levels seen in 2025.
