Donald Trump renewed his public clash with Elon Musk on July 1, 2025, accusing the Tesla chief of opposing a tax-and-spending bill because it ended electric-vehicle tax credits. That was Trump’s explanation of Musk’s motives, not an established fact. Musk had criticized the broader bill, and the dispute also involved threats about federal contracts and company subsidies—separate matters from consumer EV tax credits.
What sparked the July 2025 clash?
Musk renewed his criticism of the tax-and-spending bill, while Trump argued that Musk was upset about the bill’s treatment of EV credits and raised the prospect of scrutiny of subsidies to Musk’s companies. Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.” This is a political assertion, not a verified measure of Musk’s subsidies.
Musk’s objections were reported as extending beyond EV credits to the bill’s spending and other policy provisions. The available accounts do not establish that the credit issue alone motivated his opposition.

What changed for EV tax credits?
The change came through legislation, not Trump’s July remarks alone. Public Law 119-21, enacted July 4, 2025, set September 30, 2025, as the cutoff for covered vehicle acquisitions:
- Sections 70501 and 70502 terminated the previously owned and new clean-vehicle credits for vehicles acquired after that date.
- Section 70503 terminated the qualified commercial clean-vehicle credit for vehicles acquired after that date.
The cutoff concerns eligibility under those specific credits. It should not be conflated with every form of public support for manufacturers or with federal purchasing and contracting.

Tax credits, company subsidies and contracts are different
