Editor’s note: The figures below applied to the 2025 NFL season, which has ended. They should not be treated as current 2026 pricing. The unpleasant surprise was aimed mainly at returning subscribers: the standard standalone price rose to $480, while some new customers could buy the same season for $276.
That gap made NFL Sunday Ticket unusually easy to misprice. The headline number depended on whether you were new or returning, whether you bought through YouTube or YouTube TV, and whether you qualified for a discount.

The biggest trap was treating $480 or $378 as the price everybody paid. Those were returning-subscriber prices. New subscribers received a first-season price of $276, making the difference between a new and returning standalone customer $204.
Why returning subscribers got the bad news
The 2025 standard standalone rate was $480, up from the $449 price cited for 2024. That is a $31 increase, or about 6.9%. The returning-subscriber YouTube TV add-on was $378, up from $349—a $29 increase, or roughly 8.3%.

That increase is particularly important for households that budget by recurring subscriptions. Sunday Ticket is not a small monthly streaming charge: it is a large seasonal purchase that can arrive as a lump sum or as several installments. A returning standalone subscriber paying $480 was spending the equivalent of $40 per month if the cost were spread evenly across 12 months, although the actual available payment schedule could differ.
New customers had a much better first-season deal at $276. But that discount was not a permanent price guarantee. A subscriber renewing for another season could be moved to the higher standard rate, so the first-year price should be treated as an introductory offer rather than the long-term cost.
What the price actually bought
NFL Sunday Ticket covered regular-season Sunday afternoon games broadcast outside the viewer’s local market. It did not mean every NFL game was included.
A standalone subscription did not include:
- Sunday afternoon games carried by local CBS or FOX stations;
- nationally televised games;
- preseason games;
- playoff games or the Super Bowl; or
- games shown in the subscriber’s local market.
This distinction matters when comparing the package with its cost. Someone paying $480 still needed another source for local games, Thursday night games, Sunday night games, Monday night games, and the postseason. YouTube TV’s base plan could provide many of those local and national channels, but it came with its own separate monthly bill.

Standalone YouTube versus the YouTube TV add-on
The standalone option was sold through the YouTube Primetime Channel. It did not require a YouTube TV base-plan subscription, which made it the simpler route for someone who already had another way to watch local and national broadcasts.

The YouTube TV add-on required an active YouTube TV membership. Its 2025 Sunday Ticket price for returning customers was $378, but that was not the household’s complete television cost. The base YouTube TV plan was billed separately. Adding the base plan is therefore essential when comparing the bundle with a standalone subscription.
RedZone worked differently depending on the route. Standalone customers could add it for a $42 seasonal difference, bringing the returning-subscriber total from $480 to $522. YouTube TV customers generally accessed RedZone through the Sports Plus add-on, listed at $10.99 per month, rather than simply adding $42 to the season pass.
Discounted plans could change the calculation
Eligible students had the lowest listed 2025 price: $119 for Sunday Ticket or $129 with RedZone. The student offer was not a general promotional rate. It was restricted to eligible students and was designed for one signed-in device and one concurrent stream.
Eligible military members and veterans, first responders, nurses, and teachers could pay $198 for Sunday Ticket or $240 with RedZone. Qualification rules and verification applied, so a household should confirm eligibility before building its budget around the discounted amount.
There was no standard single-team plan, individual-game purchase, or weekly pass. That left customers with a relatively blunt choice: pay for the full season, use a qualifying discounted plan, or rely on local and nationally televised coverage.

Installments reduced the immediate hit—but not always the total
YouTube offered upfront and installment payment options. At the pricing commonly shown in March 2025, the examples were:

YouTube later announced broader installment availability for eligible viewers, including plans that could run to 12 monthly payments. The number of payments could shorten as the season approached. Payment-plan availability also depended on location: most viewers could receive up to eight monthly payments, while viewers in Colorado, Maine, Utah, and Wisconsin were limited to four. Some U.S. territories were excluded from installment or promotional pricing.

Cancellation and refund rules created another financial risk
A season pass generally could not be canceled or refunded during the purchased season, even if the customer chose installments. That creates a cash-flow risk for someone whose viewing plans change after subscribing.
Season-pass customers could turn off automatic renewal for future seasons. That prevents another charge but does not necessarily end access immediately. For a standalone subscription, the relevant cancellation path was:

That option could be canceled at any time, with access continuing through the current billing period. It was more flexible than a season pass, but customers needed to check the displayed monthly price and total expected cost before choosing it.
Purchase details that could affect the bill
- Check whether you are classified as new or returning. Do not assume that a previous subscription will receive the introductory $276 rate.
- Compare the standalone and bundle totals. The $378 YouTube TV add-on did not include the separate YouTube TV base plan.
- Buy through the web when possible. Google warned that purchasing the Primetime Channel inside the YouTube iOS app could show different or higher pricing.
- Review the payment schedule. Confirm the number of installments, the amount of each charge, and the final total.
- Check your payment-profile address. Eligibility for some plans and installment options was based on the address in the Google payments profile, not merely the device’s apparent location.
- Turn off renewal if you do not want another season. Cancellation of renewal is different from an immediate cancellation of the current season.
How to buy the standalone version
On a computer, sign in to the Google Account that will own the subscription, open YouTube, visit the NFL channel page, and select Get NFL Sunday Ticket. Choose Explore options, select the package and payment plan, and then select Check out.
On Android, search YouTube for NFL Sunday Ticket, select Get NFL Sunday Ticket, choose Explore options, and select Start membership.
For the YouTube TV version, an active YouTube TV plan was required. Membership and remaining-balance details were managed from YouTube TV’s Membership Settings page.

Is NFL Sunday Ticket worth $480?
That depends less on the number of games advertised than on how many out-of-market Sunday afternoon games the household will actually watch. A returning subscriber who watches nearly every Sunday afternoon and shares the cost across several viewers may find the package worthwhile. A casual fan who mainly follows one local team is paying for a lot of coverage that may not be useful—and there was no ordinary single-team alternative.
For budgeting purposes, the practical comparison is not simply $480 versus free television. It is:
- the Sunday Ticket price;
- the cost of any YouTube TV base plan;
- the cost of RedZone or another add-on;
- the cost of existing services that overlap with the package; and
- the number of months or games the household will genuinely use.
A new subscriber at $276 faced a substantially more attractive first-season calculation. A returning standalone customer at $480 had to decide whether the extra $204 over the introductory rate was justified by the viewing value.
