Disney and DIRECTV did reach an agreement—but not before Disney-owned channels went dark on DIRECTV on September 1, 2024, during the U.S. Open and the opening weekend of college football. The companies announced an agreement in principle on September 14 and said the channels had been restored. The episode disrupted viewing for nearly 11 million customer homes, according to the Los Angeles Times.
What happened in the Disney–DIRECTV dispute?
The companies failed to agree on a new distribution contract, and Disney programming disappeared from DIRECTV services on September 1, 2024. The timing put the outage in the middle of ESPN’s U.S. Open coverage and college football’s opening weekend, with the NFL season starting days later. The Los Angeles Times reported that nearly 11 million customer homes were affected.
This was a carriage dispute: the companies were negotiating the terms under which DIRECTV could carry Disney’s channels. Their disagreement involved carriage fees, package flexibility, and distribution of Disney streaming services. The parties offered competing explanations for the impasse, and their statements do not establish that either side’s account was objectively correct.
Which channels and programming were affected?
The affected portfolio included ESPN and other ESPN networks, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and Disney-owned ABC stations. The ABC qualification matters: reports specified Disney-owned stations, not every independently owned ABC affiliate.

For sports viewers, the immediate disruption included ESPN’s U.S. Open coverage and college football. The first Monday Night Football game of the 2024 NFL season—49ers versus Jets—was scheduled for September 9. DIRECTV later pointed to upcoming football on ABC and ESPN, as well as the ABC Emmy broadcast, when it argued that a temporary return of all Disney channels would benefit customers.
Why did Disney and DIRECTV disagree?
Disney’s position
Disney said it sought market-based rates that reflected the value and cost of its programming, while also presenting flexibility as part of a possible agreement. In a September 1 statement, Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Dana Walden and Alan Bergman and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said: “DirecTV chose to deny millions of subscribers access to our content just as we head into the final week of the US Open and gear up for college football and the opening of the NFL season.” The statement is available from Disney.

- ✅ VOICE RECOGNITION - Once paired, voice recognition is also available with the RC82V Remote Control so you can use voice search.
- ✅ DIRECTIONAL PAD - The RC82V Remote Control has a directional pad. Basic operations and functions can be made by pressing the direction, then pressing ok.
- ✅ TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION - The remote uses two-way communication to the AT&T TV to send feedback back and forth.
- ✅ INFRARED MODE - Basic remote operations can be performed in the Infrared Mode while others can be done in RF Mode.
In a September 4 statement, Disney said it believed there was a path to a “fair and flexible agreement.” Disney also said, citing Nielsen, that more than 90% of DIRECTV households watched Disney linear programming each month in 2023. That is a figure Disney reported, not an independently established measure here. See Disney’s statement.
DIRECTV’s position
DIRECTV objected to Disney’s proposed terms and pressed for customers to have more choice in how they bought channels. Chief content officer Rob Thun told the Los Angeles Times: “They want to continue to chase maximum profits and dominant control at the expense of consumers — making it harder for them to select the shows and sports they want at a reasonable price.” That was DIRECTV’s criticism of Disney’s position, not an independently verified finding.

During the dispute, DIRECTV said it would provide a $30 bill credit. That was a temporary 2024 response to the blackout, not a current offer. DIRECTV’s statement is at DIRECTV.
When did ESPN and the other Disney channels return?
Disney and DIRECTV announced an agreement in principle on September 14, 2024, and said Disney’s full linear portfolio had been restored immediately for DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM, and U-verse customers. So the answer to “When did ESPN come back?” is September 14, 2024—not a future date. The companies’ announcement is available at Disney.

The September 14 announcement outlined several components. These were terms described in principle at the time; they should not be treated as a verified account of current package availability.
- Continued carriage of Disney’s entertainment, sports, and news portfolio.
- Opportunities for genre-specific sports, entertainment, and kids-and-family options.
- Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ in select packages and on an a-la-carte basis.
- Rights for DIRECTV to distribute ESPN’s then-upcoming flagship direct-to-consumer service when it launched.
What should viewers do during a future blackout?
The 2024 resolution does not guarantee what a particular service carries today or what it would carry during a future dispute. Check the current channel lineup for your platform and market, then confirm that the specific channel and event are included before changing subscriptions.
Quick Recap
- Verify the event, not just the brand. A streaming service’s name or a channel’s on-demand library does not establish that it carries a particular live game or broadcast.
- Check local availability. Local broadcast access varies by market. An antenna may receive a local broadcast station where reception and station availability allow, but it is not a substitute for ESPN’s cable networks.
- Compare total cost and eligibility. Confirm current subscription price, package requirements, and whether the service is available to you before switching.
- Distinguish live channels from on-demand access. A service offering selected programming on demand may not provide the live linear channel or event you want.
