A refurbished phone can cut hundreds of dollars from the cost of a reliable device, but the cheapest listing is not always the cheapest purchase. Battery condition, remaining software support, carrier compatibility, warranty length, and return terms all affect the phone’s real value.
For most buyers, the strongest choices are the Apple-refurbished iPhone 16e, the Google-refurbished Pixel 8a, and Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed Galaxy S25. The right option depends on whether you prioritize iOS, Android support, camera hardware, or the lowest upfront price.
Prices and inventory below are temporary US snapshots checked August 9, 2026. Refurbished stock can change without notice.

Apple iPhone 16e: best refurbished iPhone for most people
The refurbished iPhone 16e is the safest inexpensive iPhone purchase when buying directly from Apple. At the listed $419 for an unlocked 128GB model, it combines Apple’s A18 processor, an OLED display, USB-C, Apple Intelligence support, and up to 26 hours of video playback.

- Blazing-fast Qualcomm performance. Get the speed you need for great entertainment with a Snapdragon 680 processor and 4GB**** of RAM.
- Fluid display + immersive stereo sound. Bring your entertainment to life with an ultrawide 6.5" 90Hz* HD+ display plus stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, and Hi-Res Audio**.
- 50MP*** Quad Pixel camera. Capture sharper, more vibrant photos day or night with 4x the light sensitivity.
- 64GB**** built-in storage. Get plenty of room for photos, movies, songs, and apps—and add up to 1TB more with a microSD card*****.
- Unbelievable battery life. Work and play nonstop with a long-lasting 5000mAh battery.*****
The value is not only in the hardware. Apple’s refurbishment process includes a new battery, new outer shell, functional testing, accessories, a one-year limited warranty, and a 14-day return period. That reduces the financial risk compared with buying an unknown used phone from an individual seller.
The main compromise is the camera system: the 16e is less versatile than the iPhone 16 because it does not provide the same dual-camera setup. If you mostly take standard photos and want a modern iPhone at a lower price, that trade-off is reasonable.
Apple iPhone 16: best refurbished iPhone for camera flexibility
The refurbished iPhone 16 is the better choice if you regularly use an ultrawide camera or want Apple’s Camera Control feature. It retains the A18 platform and USB-C connection while adding a more capable dual-camera system.
Apple’s listed price is $619 for 128GB unlocked. That is $200 more than the refurbished 16e, so the upgrade makes the most sense for photography, rather than general performance. Both phones are built around the same processor family; the iPhone 16 is not automatically a better value for a buyer who rarely uses the extra camera hardware.

The iPhone 15 remains attractive when its refurbished price falls meaningfully below the iPhone 16. It offers a 48MP main camera, Dynamic Island, USB-C, and the A16 Bionic chip. The listed configuration is $619 for 256GB, which makes it worth comparing carefully with newer models rather than assuming it is the bargain option.

- Android 13.0 Operating System: Runs on the latest Android OS for smooth performance and up-to-date features.
- Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac: Stay connected with others wirelessly and stream content at high speeds.
- 6.6" AMOLED Display: View vivid content on a large, high-resolution screen.
- Quad Camera Array: Capture stunning photos and 4K video with the advanced camera system.
- Long Battery Life: Power through the day on a large 5000mAh battery.
Its extra storage can justify the price for people who keep a large photo library, download videos, or plan to retain the phone for several years. However, if a 128GB iPhone 16 is available at the same price, the newer processor and longer useful life may be worth more than the additional storage.
Google Pixel 8a: best refurbished Android phone for most buyers
The Pixel 8a, from $339 refurbished, is the strongest balance of price, camera quality, and remaining software support among these Android options. Pixel 8 and newer phones receive seven years of operating-system, security, and Pixel Drop updates from their US availability date. Because the Pixel 8a became available in May 2024, its stated support period runs into May 2031.
That support horizon matters financially. A phone that costs $50 or $100 more but remains secure for several additional years can have a lower annual cost than a cheaper model that needs replacing sooner. The 8a is the sensible pick for buyers who want a compact, capable Android phone without paying flagship prices.
Google Pixel 8: best Android value upgrade
The refurbished Pixel 8 starts at $459. It provides the same seven-year support commitment as the 8a but moves into a higher tier with a better display and more capable camera hardware.
Google’s certified-refurbished program includes a one-year warranty, genuine Google parts, battery testing, unlocked carrier compatibility, and the latest applicable software before shipment. The Pixel 8 is especially compelling when its price is close to a Pixel 8a with less storage or when you value screen quality and camera performance.

Google Pixel 8 Pro: best refurbished Android camera phone
The Pixel 8 Pro, from $649, is the choice for buyers who want Google’s computational photography alongside a larger, more advanced camera system. It also benefits from the Pixel 8 series’ seven-year update policy.
It is not the best budget purchase: at this price, compare it with refurbished Samsung and newer Pixel models. But for someone who would otherwise pay for a flagship camera phone, a certified-refurbished 8 Pro can provide much of that experience at a lower upfront cost.

Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed Galaxy S25 is listed at $599 for 128GB or $629 for 256GB. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform and includes a 50MP main camera, 3x telephoto camera, Galaxy AI features, and an unlocked design for compatible carriers.
Samsung says Certified Re-Newed models receive a certified new battery, genuine Samsung parts, the latest software, a new IMEI, and testing through 147 quality checkpoints. The phone includes a one-year manufacturer warranty.
The 256GB version is the more interesting value at a $30 premium if you expect to keep the phone for years. More storage can delay cloud-storage costs or the need to replace the device, provided you actually use it.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: best refurbished Samsung camera and productivity phone
At $979, the refurbished Galaxy S25 Ultra is expensive but substantially more capable than a typical budget refurbished phone. Its listed features include 200MP wide, 12MP ultrawide, 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras, 256GB or 512GB storage, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform.
This is the right choice for buyers who specifically want Samsung’s large display, S Pen functionality, or long-range zoom. It is poor value if you mainly use messaging, browsing, and casual photography; the standard S25 provides those essentials at several hundred dollars less.
Google Pixel 7a: best budget refurbished phone
The Pixel 7a starts at $289 and is one of the least expensive official refurbished options. It remains a capable low-cost phone, but its support period is materially shorter than the Pixel 8a’s. The Pixel 7a became available in May 2023 and receives five years of updates, implying support through approximately May 2028.
Buy it when the lower price is important and you expect to replace the phone within the next couple of years. If the Pixel 8a costs only modestly more, its additional support can make it the better long-term financial choice.
Where to buy a refurbished phone
| Seller | Typical protection | Best for | Financial risk to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Certified Refurbished | New battery and shell, genuine parts, one-year warranty, 14-day returns | Lowest-risk iPhone purchase | Limited inventory; stock is not reserved until checkout |
| Google Certified Refurbished | One-year warranty, genuine parts, battery testing, unlocked phones | Pixel buyers who want manufacturer support | Check the exact model and storage price |
| Samsung Certified Re-Newed | Certified new battery, genuine parts, one-year warranty, 147-point testing | Samsung hardware and flagship features | Confirm carrier compatibility and storage tier |
| Back Market | 30-day returns and seller-provided one-year warranty | Broad selection and price comparison | Marketplace sellers may use compatible rather than original parts |
| Best Buy | Pre-owned and many refurbished listings commonly have 90-day coverage | Store pickup and in-person returns | Warranty terms vary by product page |
| Amazon Renewed | Generally a 90-day return, refund, or replacement guarantee | Comparing many sellers and prices | Renewed is a seller program, not manufacturer certification |
Manufacturer programs usually cost more than the lowest marketplace listing, but the difference can buy genuine parts, a new battery, better documentation, and a longer warranty. That protection has a monetary value: a $40 discount is not attractive if a defective phone leaves you paying for repair or replacement outside a short return window.

How to buy a refurbished phone without an expensive mistake
- Compare the exact configuration. Check model number, storage capacity, color if relevant, carrier version, and unlocked status. A headline price may apply only to 128GB storage or a specific carrier model.
- Confirm network compatibility. On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions. On Android, review Settings > About phone for the IMEI and confirm compatibility with your carrier. An unlocked phone still may lack the bands or software requirements needed for a particular network.
- Run the IMEI through the carrier’s BYOD checker. Do this before transferring your number. A device can be advertised as unlocked but still be blocked, incompatible, or ineligible for activation.
- Reject account-locked phones. An iPhone displaying iPhone Locked to Owner cannot be activated by you until the previous owner removes it from their Apple Account. A factory reset does not remove Activation Lock. On Android, the setup process should not demand the previous owner’s Google account.
- Check battery health. On iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health or Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity, peak-performance status, and warnings. A claimed 100% capacity on a marketplace listing does not prove that the battery is genuine or new.
- Review parts history on an iPhone. Go to Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. “Genuine Apple Part” is different from “Unknown.” An unknown component may be nongenuine, previously used, incorrectly installed, or malfunctioning.
- Test everything during the return period. Make a call, test mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, flash, microphones, speakers, vibration, Face ID or fingerprint unlocking, charging, buttons, touchscreen, GPS, NFC payments, and SIM or eSIM activation. Check for dead pixels, burn-in, uneven brightness, and unusual tinting.
- Assume water resistance has been compromised. A phone’s original IP rating is not a promise after years of wear, drops, repairs, or disassembly. Do not pay a premium for a refurbished phone on the assumption that it remains waterproof.
Refurbished-phone claims that can cost you money
- “Refurbished” means manufacturer-refurbished. It does not. Apple, Google, and Samsung have official programs, while Back Market and Amazon Renewed connect buyers with third-party refurbishers or sellers.
- “Excellent” means original parts. Not necessarily. Marketplace grades primarily describe appearance and function. Back Market says only its Premium grade guarantees genuine manufacturer parts; other grades may include compatible parts.
- “Unlocked” works on every network. The phone must also support the carrier’s bands, SIM or eSIM setup, software requirements, and eligibility rules.
- A factory reset removes every lock. It does not remove iPhone Activation Lock. The former owner must release the device.
- IP68 means waterproof forever. Water resistance can diminish through normal wear and may be lost after damage or repair.
- All warranties are equivalent. Official Apple, Google, and Samsung programs provide one-year manufacturer warranties. Best Buy listings commonly offer 90 days, Back Market’s one-year warranty comes from the seller, and Amazon Renewed generally provides 90 days, subject to the individual listing’s terms.
FAQ
Is buying a refurbished phone worth it?
Yes, when the discount is meaningful and the seller provides a clear return period, warranty, battery policy, and account-lock protection. Manufacturer-refurbished phones usually offer the lowest risk, while marketplace listings can be cheaper but require more checking.
What is the best refurbished phone for under $400?
The Google Pixel 8a, listed from $339, is the best overall option for many Android buyers because it combines good cameras with updates promised through May 2031. The Pixel 7a, from $289, is a cheaper alternative but has a shorter support period. Apple’s refurbished iPhone 16e is the stronger iPhone choice if your budget can reach $419.
How much battery health should a refurbished phone have?
There is no universal number because sellers use different standards. Ask for the seller’s minimum capacity in writing, then inspect the phone immediately. On iPhone, review Battery Health and any genuine-part warning; do not assume a listed 100% capacity proves the battery is original.
Should I buy refurbished directly from Apple, Google, or Samsung?
Buy directly from the manufacturer when warranty quality, genuine parts, battery replacement, and support matter most. Use Back Market, Best Buy, or Amazon Renewed for broader selection or a lower price, but inspect the individual seller, exact model, battery terms, warranty, carrier status, and return deadline.

The Bottom Line
The iPhone 16e is the safest lower-cost iPhone purchase, the Pixel 8a is the best balance of Android price and long support, and the Galaxy S25 Certified Re-Newed is the strongest Samsung value. Buy through Apple, Google, or Samsung when the extra assurance is worth more than the absolute lowest price. If you use a marketplace, treat the listing as a financial contract: verify storage, unlocked status, IMEI compatibility, battery terms, account-lock status, warranty, and return window before the deadline expires.
