Recommended Free Tools
Price and availability checked August 9, 2026. For this guide, “cheap” means a phone priced below $600 before tax, with separate recommendations for buyers spending under $300 and those considering carrier promotions. The Google Pixel 10a is the best overall buy at $499: it combines a good camera, long software support, water resistance and strong battery life without requiring a carrier contract.
The cheapest advertised price is not always the lowest-cost phone. A carrier’s “free” offer may require a new line, an expensive unlimited plan and 24 or 36 months of bill credits. Compare the total amount you will pay, the cost of your service and what happens if you cancel early.

1. Google Pixel 10a: best cheap phone overall
At $499 unlocked, the Pixel 10a is the easiest budget recommendation for most US buyers. Its 6.3-inch pOLED screen runs from 60Hz to 120Hz, and the Tensor G4 processor handles everyday apps, photography and Google’s AI features comfortably. Storage is 128GB or 256GB, but it cannot be expanded with a microSD card.
The 48MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide produce better results than the specifications alone suggest because Google does much of the work in software. Useful features include Macro Focus, Night Sight Astrophotography, Camera Coach, Auto Best Take and Google Photos editing tools. There is no dedicated telephoto camera, so zoom is cropped or digital rather than optical.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
The 5,100mAh battery lasted 15 hours 16 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s test. The phone supports 30W wired charging and 10W wireless charging, has IP68 dust and water resistance, and ships with Android 16. Google promises seven years of operating-system, security and Pixel Drop updates.
Choose it if: you want one unlocked phone that is good at cameras, software support, battery life and ordinary performance.
Skip it if: you need expandable storage, serious gaming performance or a real telephoto lens. It is also not a major hardware leap over the Pixel 9a; much of the value comes from software and AI improvements.
2. iPhone 17e: best cheap iPhone
The iPhone 17e starts at $599 with 256GB of storage. That is a meaningful advantage over Android phones that commonly start at 128GB, particularly if you keep photos, videos and downloaded media on the phone. A 512GB version costs $799.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple’s A19 chip makes the 17e the fastest-performing phone in this price group. It also has a 6.1-inch OLED display, IP68 protection, a 48MP Fusion rear camera, a 12MP autofocus TrueDepth front camera and MagSafe/Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W. Apple rates it for up to 26 hours of video playback or 21 hours of streamed video playback.
The financial case is strongest for people already using an Apple Watch, AirPods, iMessage or FaceTime. Switching ecosystems can create replacement costs that erase the apparent savings of a cheaper Android phone.

The key drawback is the screen: its refresh rate is up to 60Hz, while several Android competitors offer 120Hz or even 144Hz panels. US versions are also eSIM-only and do not accept a physical SIM card. Check that your carrier supports eSIM before buying.
3. Samsung Galaxy A57 5G: best Samsung value
Samsung lists the Galaxy A57 5G at a sale price of $449.99 for 128GB, reduced from $549.99. The 256GB model is listed at $509.99, reduced from $609.99. Because these are promotional prices, check Samsung’s current listing before treating the discount as part of your budget.
This is the right choice for buyers who prefer Samsung’s One UI software, Galaxy services and ecosystem, and who want a large-screen Android phone without reaching flagship prices. Samsung’s A-series also tends to offer stronger update support than many low-cost rivals. Verify the A57’s exact promise on the product page rather than assuming that every A-series phone receives the same number of updates.
Samsung does not include a wall charger. The box contains the phone, data cable and SIM-ejection pin, so add a compatible charger to the purchase cost if you do not already own one.
4. Nothing Phone (4a) Pro: best features and zoom under $500
The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro costs $499 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or $599 for 12GB and 256GB. Nothing’s US store has also shown temporary pricing as low as $419 for the lower-storage model, so $499 should be treated as the regular price, not the guaranteed lowest price.
Its standout hardware includes a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, a 5,080mAh battery, 50W wired charging and a 50MP 3.5x telephoto camera. The distinctive Nothing OS interface is another reason to buy it.

Testing found inconsistent exposure and pale colors in some photos, and battery endurance was below Nothing’s estimates. Its IP65 rating also provides less protection than the Pixel 10a’s IP68 rating or the ruggedized Motorola models’ IP68/IP69 claims. Some faster 5G bands may not work on every US carrier, so verify compatibility for the exact model before purchasing—especially for Verizon or AT&T.
5. Motorola Moto G Power (2026): best phone under $300 for durability
Starting at $299, the Moto G Power (2026) is a practical choice for buyers who value battery capacity, physical durability and storage flexibility over camera quality or premium display technology.
It has a 6.8-inch 120Hz LCD, a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1TB. The 5,200mAh battery supports 30W wired charging. Motorola lists a 50MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide, Android 16, IP68/IP69 water protection, MIL-STD-810H testing and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Tom’s Guide measured 18 hours 22 minutes in its battery test. The screen is dimmer and less contrasty than an AMOLED display, the processor is suited to moderate rather than demanding use, and this model does not support wireless charging.

6. Motorola Moto G (2026): best battery-life bargain
The standard Moto G (2026) also starts at $299 and is the better battery bargain on the available testing evidence. Tom’s Guide recorded 19 hours 10 minutes, the longest result among the cheap phones it tested.

It includes a 6.8-inch FHD+ 120Hz LCD, a 5,200mAh battery, 30W charging, 128GB of storage, microSD expansion up to 1TB, Android 16 and IP68/IP69 protection. Its performance is modest, but that is acceptable for calls, messaging, maps, streaming and light browsing.
The trade-off is support: Motorola promises only two Android version updates for this model. A discounted older Moto G may cost less, but the 2026 version is generally the safer purchase if you plan to keep the phone for several years. Battery-test results are not the same as a guaranteed two-day battery; brightness, signal strength, gaming and 5G use can reduce runtime substantially.
7. Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: best super-cheap phone
The unlocked 128GB Galaxy A17 5G has a US MSRP of $199.99. It is unusually appealing at this price because it combines a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, 90Hz refresh rate, 5,000mAh battery, 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization and six OS upgrades plus six years of security updates.
Those are strong ownership economics for a light user. The problem is speed. With 4GB of RAM and an Exynos 1330 processor, the A17 can feel slow when opening the camera, switching among apps or keeping numerous browser tabs active. It is not a sensible gaming or heavy-multitasking phone.
Buy it for calls, messaging, streaming, basic photography and a long support runway—not because the specification sheet makes it look like a performance bargain.

The Moto G Stylus (2026) is a specialist purchase. Its active stylus offers pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, a hover cursor and shortcuts. If you annotate documents, sketch, sign forms or take handwritten notes, those features can justify paying more than the standard Moto G models.
Other hardware includes a 6.8-inch AMOLED display, 5,200mAh battery, 68W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, microSD expansion up to 1TB, Android 16 and IP68/IP69 protection. It also retains a headphone jack, which is increasingly uncommon.
Do not buy it as the default best-value Motorola. The stylus is the reason to choose it; if you will not use the pen, a cheaper Moto G Power or a Pixel 10a is likely a better allocation of your money.
How to calculate the real cost of a cheap phone
- Start with the purchase price. Include sales tax, shipping, a case, screen protector and—if needed—a wall charger or microSD card.
- Compare service separately. A phone discounted by $600 may require a more expensive unlimited plan than the one you already use.
- Read the carrier-credit terms. “Free” commonly means monthly bill credits over 24–36 months. Cancelling, changing plans or moving to another carrier may end the credits and leave you responsible for the remaining balance.
- Check compatibility before buying unlocked. Confirm the model supports your carrier’s LTE and 5G bands, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM or physical SIM requirements.
- Price storage for the whole ownership period. A $499 phone with 128GB can become more expensive than a $549 phone with 256GB if you need cloud storage or replace the device early.
- Value software support. A phone that receives security updates for six or seven years can cost less over time than a cheaper device that becomes unsupported after two years.
What about refurbished or used phones?
A refurbished previous-generation iPhone or Pixel can outperform a new $200 phone, but marketplace risk is part of the price. Before paying, check the IMEI for carrier blocking, confirm that Activation Lock is removed, inspect battery health, ask whether parts were replaced, look for water damage and verify that the exact model works on your carrier.
Buy from a seller with a meaningful return period and a clearly stated warranty. A listing that says “excellent condition” does not guarantee an original display, an unmodified battery or a clean ownership history.

FAQ
What is the best cheap phone in the US in 2026?
The Google Pixel 10a is the best overall unlocked option at $499. It offers a strong camera, 120Hz-capable pOLED display, IP68 protection, good battery life and seven years of updates. Buyers who prefer iOS should consider the $599 iPhone 17e instead.
Is it cheaper to buy a phone from a carrier?
Not necessarily. Carrier promotions may require a new line, a qualifying plan, a trade-in and 24–36 months of bill credits. Add the required service cost and check the payoff rules before comparing the offer with an unlocked phone.
What is the best cheap phone under $300?
The Motorola Moto G Power (2026) is the strongest all-round option under $300 for buyers who want a large battery, microSD storage, durability and a headphone jack. The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G costs less and has longer stated support, but its performance is much slower.
Are cheap phones worth buying in 2026?
Yes, if you match the phone to your use and check its update policy. A $199 Galaxy A17 5G can make financial sense for light use, while a $499 Pixel 10a may be cheaper over several years because it receives seven years of updates and avoids an early replacement.
The Bottom Line
The Google Pixel 10a is the best cheap phone for most US shoppers: $499 buys a capable camera phone with long support, water resistance and strong battery life. Spend less on the Moto G Power or Galaxy A17 5G when your priorities are durability, battery life or a low upfront bill. Choose a carrier deal only after calculating the full plan-and-installment cost, not just the advertised monthly payment.
