UPS says retail rates apply at both The UPS Store and UPS Customer Centers. But that does not guarantee the same final checkout total: estimates may differ from the actual charge, and optional or accessorial fees can vary. The comparison below is based on U.S. UPS pricing guidance.
Are UPS Store and UPS Customer Center rates the same?
For a walk-in shipment, both locations fall under UPS’s retail-rate category. UPS states that “If you’re shipping from a UPS retail location, like The UPS Store® or a UPS Customer Center, retail rates apply.” UPS Retail Rates and Zone Charts therefore provides the relevant baseline for comparing these two types of counter.
That category-level answer is not a promise that every shipment will cost exactly the same at every location. The final charge depends on the shipment and the services requested, and local optional or accessorial charges may vary.
Why can the final price differ?
The online quote is an estimate
The UPS Store’s shipping-cost estimator says its estimates are based on UPS retail rates and do not include incentives or special programs. It also warns that the actual UPS Ground rate may differ. Treat the result as an estimate, not a guaranteed counter price.

Shipment details and add-ons affect the total
Rates can depend on the origin and destination, service level, package weight and other shipment details. Packing or other optional services can add charges; The UPS Store notes that optional and accessorial charges may vary at the point of purchase. When comparing totals, check whether both include the same services rather than comparing a bare shipping charge with a price that includes extras.
Could a UPS account or pickup arrangement change the rate?
Potentially. UPS distinguishes retail rates from daily rates, which are for customers with a scheduled pickup and/or an account that provides daily rates. UPS’s rate calculator also says negotiated rates are unavailable at retail locations. If you ship regularly, check the terms and quote available through your account or pickup arrangement rather than assuming the walk-in retail price applies. How to compare prices for your package
- Use identical shipment details. Enter the same origin and destination ZIP codes, service level, package type, dimensions, weight and declared value wherever the quote tool requests them.
- Include the same extras. Account for packing and any other optional services in both totals. Check what each quote includes.
- Compare current quotes. Use the UPS rate calculator or The UPS Store estimator, then confirm the final charge and any location-specific fees with the counter where you plan to ship. Rates and surcharges can change.
Without a route, package details and chosen services, there is no reliable dollar difference to state. Also, the published rate-category guidance does not establish which services or hours are available at a particular UPS Customer Center; check the location directly if that matters to your shipment.
