On Maharashtra’s latest comparable district-income estimates reviewed here, Konkan’s per-capita nominal net district domestic product was ₹4,02,769 in 2023-24. The corresponding figures were ₹1,66,465 for Amravati division and ₹2,49,703 for Nagpur division—two divisions commonly grouped as Vidarbha. These figures indicate lower average economic output per person in the two Vidarbha divisions than in Konkan, but they are not household incomes or poverty rates.
How large is the gap in the official figures?
Maharashtra’s Economic Survey 2024-25 reports these 2023-24 per-capita nominal net district domestic product estimates. The figures are at current prices and are first revised estimates.
| Area | Per-capita estimate, 2023-24 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Konkan division | ₹4,02,769 | Division estimate |
| Amravati division | ₹1,66,465 | One of the two divisions commonly used to represent Vidarbha |
| Nagpur division | ₹2,49,703 | One of the two divisions commonly used to represent Vidarbha |
| Vidarbha, simple unweighted mean of Amravati and Nagpur | ₹2,08,084 | Calculation from the two division figures, not an official combined Vidarbha statistic |
Konkan’s estimate is about 1.9 times the unweighted mean of the Amravati and Nagpur division figures. That comparison describes estimated output per person, not how much money a typical resident receives or has available to spend. The official survey reports Amravati and Nagpur separately; combining them would require population weighting to produce a regional per-capita figure.
The survey also reports Maharashtra per-capita state income of ₹2,78,681 for 2023-24, a first revised estimate, and ₹3,09,340 for 2024-25, an advance estimate. Those statewide figures are useful context, but the 2024-25 state estimate is not a directly comparable update to the 2023-24 division figures.

Does this mean Vidarbha is “poor” and Konkan is “rich”?
Not by itself. Per-capita net district domestic product is an estimate of economic output attributable to an area divided by its mid-year population. It is not a measure of each resident’s earnings, household income, consumption, wealth, or access to services. A higher average can coexist with substantial hardship, while a lower average does not mean every household is poor.
The reviewed survey does not provide a current, comparable poverty rate for Konkan and Vidarbha. The income gap therefore cannot establish what share of residents in either region live below a poverty line. The survey’s older district Human Development Index table uses 2011 data and should not be treated as a current poverty ranking.

District averages show wide variation within both regions
A division-level figure can obscure large differences among its districts. The same survey’s 2023-24 district estimates include:
| Region | District | Per-capita estimate, 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|
| Konkan | Raigad | ₹3,15,681 |
| Konkan | Ratnagiri | ₹2,45,421 |
| Konkan | Sindhudurg | ₹2,79,080 |
| Vidarbha | Nagpur | ₹3,22,927 |
| Vidarbha | Gadchiroli | ₹1,40,860 |
| Vidarbha | Yavatmal | ₹1,60,088 |
Nagpur district’s estimate exceeds those of the three listed Konkan districts, while Gadchiroli and Yavatmal are substantially lower. These examples are not a complete district ranking; they show why a regional average should not be applied to every locality or household.

How Maharashtra estimates district income—and what that limits
The Directorate of Economics and Statistics says district estimates of gross value added are prepared using the “Income Originating Approach.” It has district-level data for agriculture and allied activities and for mining and quarrying. For other sectors, it allocates state gross value added using proxy indicators. Per-capita income is calculated by dividing the relevant net product by the area’s mid-year population.
The survey cautions that district estimates should be used “only to have a broad idea of the economy at district level.” Because some sectors are allocated through proxies, the estimates are useful for broad comparisons but should not be read as precise measures of residents’ personal finances.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: In the 2023-24 estimates, Konkan’s average per-capita district product was higher than the separate estimates for Amravati and Nagpur divisions.
- It cannot show: The poverty rate, typical household income, cost-of-living-adjusted prosperity, or the experience of every resident in either region.
- It needs context: The figures are nominal, at current prices. Comparing values across years without adjusting for inflation does not show real purchasing-power growth.
The principal figures come from the Maharashtra Economic Survey 2024-25 district estimates, with division figures and district examples detailed in the survey’s district income tables. The survey’s methodology and cautions explain the proxy allocation and broad-use limitation; the statewide estimates and their status are in its state income section.
