Their worth depends on the specific booking, how many rewards it costs, what you would otherwise pay, and the rules of the issuer or loyalty program. For U.S. cardholders, the practical way to maximize rewards is to compare the same flight or hotel stay through the available booking routes before redeeming or transferring.
Points and miles are program labels, not a shared currency
A card issuer may call its rewards “points,” while an airline calls its loyalty currency “miles.” Those names do not establish a common conversion rate or a fixed dollar value. Issuers and travel programs set their own earning and redemption rules; even within one program, the rewards cost can depend on the booking and current availability. Chase likewise notes that redemption value can vary by case: Chase’s guide to traveling on points and miles.
Some U.S. credit-card programs let eligible cardholders use issuer points to book travel through an issuer portal or transfer them to a participating airline or hotel loyalty program. These are different routes, not two names for the same redemption. Once rewards are transferred, the partner program’s terms apply. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that loyalty-program merchants typically control redemption value and available inventory after rewards are awarded or transferred: CFPB, Credit Card Rewards Issue Spotlight (May 2024).
How to compare points and miles for a real trip
Compare one exact itinerary or stay, on the dates you want, rather than relying on a generic cents-per-point estimate. The following checks help reveal whether the portal or a partner redemption makes sense for that booking.

- Choose the booking. Identify the exact flight or hotel, dates, travelers, and relevant booking conditions. A different date or itinerary may have different award availability and rewards pricing.
- Record the cash price. Check the price for the same itinerary or stay through the booking route you would actually use. Note any taxes or fees included or added at checkout.
- Check the issuer’s portal. If your account offers portal booking, find the points price for the same booking and compare it with the cash price. Portal redemption value can vary; do not assume a fixed rate without checking your account’s current terms.
- Check the loyalty program directly. Search the airline’s or hotel program’s own site for the same dates, actual award availability, and points or miles required. Award inventory and redemption requirements may differ from cash-booking availability.
- Confirm transfer eligibility and terms. Check that your specific card and account can transfer to that partner, then verify the current transfer ratio, timing, and any applicable conditions with the issuer. Partner lists and ratios can change; NerdWallet’s overview, updated July 1, 2026, can help identify programs to check, but confirm decisions against current issuer terms: NerdWallet’s transfer-partner overview.
- Compare the full cost and restrictions. Consider rewards spent, cash due for taxes or fees, transfer timing, and the rules that apply after transfer. A lower rewards price is not automatically the better deal if its cash charges or restrictions make the booking less useful.
- Transfer only when ready to book. Reconfirm that the award is still available and that the transfer terms suit you before moving rewards. Some transfers are final, and a completed transfer does not guarantee the award remains available.
Issuer portal booking versus transferring to a partner
| What to compare | Issuer portal | Transfer to a loyalty program |
|---|---|---|
| Where you book | Through the issuer’s travel portal, if your eligible account offers that option. | Through the participating airline or hotel program after transfer. |
| Rewards price | Check the points required for the exact booking in your account; redemption value can vary by case. | Check the partner’s award price and availability for your dates. Requirements can vary and may change. |
| Transfer step | No partner transfer is needed to make a portal redemption. | Eligibility, ratio, timing, and transfer conditions depend on the issuer, account, and partner. |
| Rules after redemption or transfer | Review the issuer’s current booking and redemption terms. | The partner program’s terms govern transferred rewards and the award booking. |
| Main trade-off | Can be simpler when the portal has the booking you want at a points cost you accept. | Can be useful when a suitable partner award is available and its cost and conditions compare favorably. |
Neither route is automatically best. The right choice depends on the actual booking, its total out-of-pocket cost, and the applicable terms. Chase describes both portal booking and partner transfers as possible redemption routes, with value varying across cases and partners: Chase’s travel-rewards guide.
What changes after you transfer points?
A transfer moves rewards from an issuer program into a partner’s loyalty program. It does not simply relabel the issuer points as an equivalent number of miles. The partner controls how its rewards can be redeemed, which awards are available, and the terms for using them. The CFPB’s May 2024 report describes this structural role of loyalty programs; it is not a current comparison of card products or transfer offers.

American Airlines’ AAdvantage terms, updated January 13, 2026, state: “All AAdvantage® mileage redemption opportunities are determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion and can be changed by American Airlines for any reason and at any time.” The same terms say partner award availability and mileage requirements may vary. See the AAdvantage terms and conditions. These are American Airlines program terms, not a rule that defines every airline or hotel program; check the terms for the partner you plan to use.
How to transfer points safely
The exact controls and eligibility requirements vary by issuer and account, so use the transfer instructions in your issuer account rather than assuming every card works the same way. For eligible American Express Membership Rewards accounts, American Express’ transfer FAQ instructs cardmembers to confirm award availability and the points needed before transferring, because transfers are final. It also says the partner’s terms apply after transfer.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check current account eligibility and whether the intended partner is available to you.
- Confirm the partner award is available for the exact trip or stay and dates.
- Verify the rewards required, current transfer ratio, expected timing, and cash charges.
- Read the issuer’s transfer rules and the partner’s award terms before authorizing the transfer.
- Transfer only the amount needed for the booking you have confirmed, understanding that reversibility depends on the issuer’s terms.
How to get the most value from your rewards
Start with the trip or stay you would genuinely book, then compare the cash and rewards options available to your account. A redemption is useful when its rewards cost and added cash charges are acceptable for the booking you want—not because a points valuation claims that one program is always worth more than another.
- Compare identical dates and booking details, not a cash fare on one itinerary with an award on another.
- Include taxes and fees in the comparison, along with restrictions that affect whether you can use the booking.
- Check current award availability before transferring; availability and rewards requirements may change.
- Consider simplicity as a real trade-off: a portal redemption may suit you when it offers an acceptable booking, while a partner transfer may suit you when a specific award is available on acceptable terms.
- Verify current issuer and loyalty-program rules at the time you act. Transfer partners, ratios, timing, fees, and benefits are not universal or guaranteed to remain unchanged.
This guide focuses on U.S.-oriented issuer examples. Card products, partner access, fees, transfer rules, and account eligibility vary by country and issuer, so readers outside the United States should check the terms for their own market.
