A reliable public estimate of Dion Phaneuf’s current net worth has not been established. HockeyZonePlus reports US$75,660,878 in NHL career earnings, but that is a salary-history total—not a calculation of his wealth today.
What is Dion Phaneuf’s net worth?
There is no verified current net-worth figure in the available sources. A net-worth estimate would require information about assets and liabilities, along with taxes, spending, investment results, and income beyond NHL playing contracts. The cited salary and contract records do not provide that complete financial picture.
HockeyZonePlus lists US$75,660,878 as Phaneuf’s NHL career earnings. The site presents annual amounts in U.S. dollars and attributes many season figures to NHLPA data, but it is a secondary compilation, not a public disclosure of Phaneuf’s finances. See HockeyZonePlus’s salary history for Dion Phaneuf.
How much did Dion Phaneuf earn in the NHL?
HockeyZonePlus reports a career total of US$75,660,878 for the seasons from 2005–06 through 2018–19. It also displays an inflation-adjusted total of US$106,015,406. These are the database’s reported career-earnings figures; the inflation-adjusted amount is not a net-worth estimate or a measure of money Phaneuf currently holds.

What was Phaneuf’s contract?
Phaneuf signed a seven-year, US$49 million contract in December 2013, according to PuckPedia. When Toronto traded him to Ottawa in February 2016, the NHL reported that five years remained and described a US$7 million annual salary-cap charge. The NHL also reported that Toronto retained no salary in the trade. PuckPedia’s contract page lists the deal; the NHL’s trade report gives the remaining term and cap context.

Those figures describe different things. The seven-year, US$49 million figure is the contract’s stated total value; the annual cap hit is a salary-cap accounting measure. Neither, by itself, establishes how much cash Phaneuf received in a particular season or how much of his career earnings remains as wealth.
How did the buyout affect the contract?
The Los Angeles Kings announced in June 2019 that they were buying out Phaneuf’s contract, before the 2019–20 season. The Kings’ announcement confirms the buyout. The original contract’s US$49 million total therefore should not be treated as proof that Phaneuf personally kept that amount: contract value, salary payments, and the financial consequences of a buyout are not interchangeable.

- Earnings are not remaining wealth. A career-earnings total does not subtract taxes, spending, financial obligations, or other costs.
- Contracts do not reveal a full financial position. They do not establish current assets, debts, investment performance, or income outside playing contracts.
- Different salary figures answer different questions. Total contract value, salary paid, annual cap hit, and inflation-adjusted earnings should not be compared as though they were the same measure.
Phaneuf announced his retirement in November 2021. The NHL quoted him saying, “For me to stand here and officially announce my retirement, I’m definitely at ease and am looking forward to the next stage of my life.” The announcement dates his retirement, but it does not disclose his present finances.
