You get one through a phone carrier, cloud communications company, or other provider connected to a Responsible Organization (RespOrg).
The provider searches the toll-free registry, reserves an available number, and connects it to your phone system. Before signing up, compare the monthly number fee, call charges, texting costs, contract terms, and porting rules—not just whether the number looks memorable.
What an 800 number is
An 800 number is a non-geographic U.S. and North American toll-free number. It is not associated with a city or state. In the usual arrangement, the caller does not pay the normal long-distance charge, while the business pays for the number and the incoming call service.
The current North American toll-free prefixes are:
| Prefix | What it means |
|---|---|
| 800 | The original and generally most sought-after toll-free prefix. |
| 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888 | Also toll-free. Availability is checked separately from 800 numbers. |
A number beginning with 833 or 888 still provides toll-free service. If the exact 800 number you want is unavailable, searching the other prefixes may produce the same word or a similar digit pattern.

How to get an 800 number
- Choose the service you need. Decide whether the number will receive voice calls only or also support outbound caller ID, call forwarding, an automated menu, business-hours routing, recording, fax, SMS, or MMS.
- Choose a provider. Options include traditional telephone carriers, business-phone systems, contact-center platforms, and cloud communications providers such as Twilio. The provider or its RespOrg partner handles the registry transaction.
- Search for available numbers. Search by exact digits, a partial pattern, or a vanity phrase. Include the 800 prefix in your search if that prefix matters to you.
- Review the charges and capabilities. Check the monthly number fee, incoming and outgoing per-minute rates, messaging fees, taxes, regulatory charges, setup costs, and any minimum commitment.
- Reserve or purchase the number. A number shown in a search result is not yours until the provider successfully reserves or assigns it. Availability can change while you are completing checkout.
- Configure call handling. Route calls to your existing phone, a SIP trunk, a PBX, a call queue, voicemail, or an interactive voice response menu.
- Test it before advertising it. Call from a mobile phone, landline, and—if relevant—locations outside the United States. Verify caller ID, transfers, voicemail, after-hours routing, and recording.
What to prepare before searching
Have several options ready. A popular vanity number may already be assigned, and the same phrase in another toll-free prefix is not automatically available to the current owner.
- Your preferred business name or vanity phrase
- Three or more fallback numbers or phrases
- The countries from which customers need to call
- Whether you need voice, SMS, MMS, fax, or only call forwarding
- The phones, extensions, or software that should receive calls
- Billing and business-identification information requested by the provider
For a vanity number, letters are converted using the telephone keypad. For example, FLOWERS becomes 3569377. The carrier searches and assigns the underlying digits; the letters are only a marketing aid.
Example: getting one through Twilio
The exact Console layout can vary, but the current Twilio route is generally:
Products & Services → Numbers & Senders → Phone Numbers → Set up a new phone number

- Select United States.
- Choose Toll-Free as the number type.
- Search using digits, letters, or a pattern.
- Select capabilities such as Voice, SMS, or MMS.
- Review the monthly price and the capabilities shown for the specific number.
- Click Buy, or the equivalent purchase button in your account.
- Configure the number’s incoming-call behavior after it is provisioned.
Twilio also provides an API for automated searches. A U.S. toll-free availability request uses this endpoint:
GET https://api.twilio.com/2010-04-01/Accounts/{AccountSid}/AvailablePhoneNumbers/US/TollFree.json
Search parameters can include contains, areaCode, inRegion, inPostalCode, pageSize, and capability filters. After selecting a number, Twilio’s purchase process uses the IncomingPhoneNumbers resource with the chosen number in the PhoneNumber parameter. You do not need an API to obtain the number; the web Console is simpler for a one-number setup.
How much an 800 number costs
Budget for three main categories:
| Cost | How it is charged | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Number rental | Recurring monthly fee | Whether billing starts as soon as the number is provisioned, even before you use it. |
| Voice service | Usually per minute | Inbound, outbound, transfer, recording, voicemail, and international rates. |
| Texting | Per message plus possible carrier fees | Registration, campaign review, throughput limits, and failed-message charges. |
As one provider-specific example, Twilio’s U.S. pricing page lists a toll-free number at $2.15 per month and inbound toll-free voice at $0.0220 per minute. That would make 500 inbound minutes cost $11 in usage, before the $2.15 number charge, taxes, and any other service fees. Rates vary by provider and can change, so do not treat those figures as an industry-wide price.

Getting text messages on an 800 number
Voice activation does not automatically enable business texting. If you want customers to text the number, confirm that the provider supports SMS or MMS for that specific toll-free number and complete its registration process.
For example, Twilio’s Console path is:
Products & Services → Numbers & Senders → Registrations → Toll free
You may need to submit the business name, contact details, business location, messaging use case, sample messages, and opt-in information. U.S. and Canadian toll-free messaging generally requires verification. Unverified or noncompliant messages may be filtered or blocked by carriers. This messaging requirement is separate from purchasing and using the number for voice calls.

Can you transfer an existing 800 number?
Usually, you can port an existing toll-free number to another provider instead of obtaining a new one. The receiving provider typically asks for authorization and account information from the current carrier. Keep the old service active until the port is complete; canceling early can cause the number to be disconnected or make the transfer harder.
Ask the new provider about porting timelines, temporary forwarding, required paperwork, and whether all current features will transfer. A number that supports voice at the old carrier may need separate work to support messaging at the new one.
Important limitations and traps
- You do not get it directly from the FCC. The FCC regulates toll-free numbering, but providers and RespOrgs assign and manage numbers for subscribers.
- An available search result is not a guaranteed purchase. The number is assigned only when the registry accepts the reservation or assignment request.
- You do not permanently own the number as property. You control its use while it remains active under your carrier service. Be skeptical of websites claiming to sell permanent ownership independently of phone service.
- A reservation can expire. Under the Somos tariff effective February 15, 2025, a specific toll-free number can be reserved for up to 45 calendar days. If activation is not ordered in time, it can return to the spare pool.
- Disconnected numbers are not immediately recycled. Industry procedures provide a 45-day delay before a disconnected toll-free number returns to the spare pool.
- Some numbers are unavailable for ordinary use. Certain ranges are closed or reserved. For example, 800-555-0199 and 888-555-0199 are fictional entertainment-industry numbers.
- Toll-free does not mean free from every location. Calls from outside the North American toll-free service area, some payphones, and certain international networks may incur charges or fail to connect. Check the provider’s coverage map and international rates.
How to choose between an 800 and another toll-free prefix
Choose 800 if the prefix is important to your brand and the number is available at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, compare the complete number rather than rejecting every alternative. A clear, easy-to-repeat 833 or 888 number may be more useful than a complicated 800 number.
Availability is separate for each prefix. Holding 1-800-EXAMPLE does not give you priority to 1-833-EXAMPLE, and a provider cannot promise that the same vanity word will be available across all seven toll-free codes.

FAQ
Can I get an 800 number for free?
Some providers offer trials or bundled business-phone plans, but a toll-free number normally has a recurring service charge and usage fees. You may also pay for texting, taxes, recording, forwarding, or other features.
Do I need a business to get an 800 number?
You obtain the number through a telecommunications provider, which may accept individual or business accounts. However, provider requirements vary, and business texting generally requires additional identity and use-case information.
How long does it take to get an 800 number?
A number available for immediate provisioning may be active within minutes, depending on the provider. Custom routing, porting an existing number, and toll-free messaging verification can take longer.
Can I keep my 800 number if I change providers?
In many cases, yes. Ask the new provider to port the number and keep the old account active until the transfer is finished. Do not cancel first.

To get an 800 number, choose a carrier or cloud phone provider, search the toll-free registry through that provider, compare the full monthly and usage costs, and purchase an available number. Configure and test the call routing before publishing it. If you need texting, treat registration and carrier approval as a separate step, and if you already have a number, port it rather than starting over.
