Shopify: do not build a new store around old theme names
BKLYN, Debut, Bliss, Express, Boundless, Simple, Supply, and Venture appeared in older recommendations, but they are legacy Shopify themes rather than reliable current choices for a new store. Shopify says vintage themes no longer listed in its Theme Store have been sunset and are no longer updated.
To inspect current free options:
- Open Shopify admin and go to Online Store > Themes.
- Use Discover themes or click Visit theme store.
- Filter for features such as Product filtering, Quick buy, Sticky navigation, Video, or Wide layout.
- Select a theme and click Add. It will appear under Draft themes before you publish it.
One important plan restriction: Shopify’s Starter plan permits only the Spotlight theme. Also, changing themes does not delete your products, collections, menus, pages, or blog posts, but you must rebuild theme-specific sections, settings, text, code customizations, and templates. Check Shopify’s current pricing and promotions rather than relying on an older trial or introductory offer.
Squarespace: the named designs are not separate 7.1 feature sets
Tresoire, Alta Loma, Ventura, and Hester may be useful visual references, but treating them as four materially different Squarespace ecommerce systems is misleading on version 7.1. Squarespace 7.1 sites use one template family with the same core features and style options. The initial design is a starting point, not a permanent feature bundle.

On a 7.1 site, use pages, sections, blocks, Site styles, and style packs to change the appearance. The primary editor is Fluid Engine: after selecting Edit on a page, use Add Block in the top-left of a Fluid Engine section. Fluid Engine is not available on version 7.0 sites.
Squarespace 7.1 does not let you switch templates after creating the site. If you want a substantially different starting design, create a new trial site or reconstruct the design with sections and styles. The older path—Design > Template > Install new template—applies to version 7.0, not 7.1.
Wix: check the current catalog and the store installation
Wix’s catalog is large and changes over time, so a named template should be verified immediately before publication. To find one:
- Sign in to Wix and open the Templates Page.
- Choose a category from the drop-down menu.
- Select a subcategory.
- Hover over a template and click Edit.
Wix Stores may already be installed in an ecommerce template. If it is not, Wix says it can be added to any template. Confirm that the store supports the products you sell, including variants, inventory, shipping rules, subscriptions, and payment providers available in your country.

Third-party apps, headers and footers, Wix business-solution apps, datasets and collections, code, and Wix Pro Gallery content may require separate migration work. Weebly and Square: distinguish the older theme model
Dusk, Paper, Venue, and Brisk are older Weebly-oriented recommendations. Weebly is part of Square, and Square is promoting Square Websites as the newer ecommerce experience built with Weebly technology. The current Square editor emphasizes customizable sections rather than selecting a traditional theme and dragging individual elements onto a page.
To investigate the current workflow, open Square Dashboard > Channels > Square Online. From there you can design the site, configure checkout, set a domain, and publish. Square Online can synchronize items, inventory, sales, and customers with Square tools, which may reduce reconciliation work for a business already using Square in person.
Trying Square Websites does not automatically replace an existing Weebly site; Square says you can add a new site to test the editor. Do not assume an old Weebly theme or its App Center integrations will transfer. The Square editor uses the Square App Marketplace rather than the Weebly App Center.
BigCommerce: verify features instead of trusting the theme description
Cornerstone remains a current BigCommerce Stencil theme foundation. Its developer documentation identifies a structure containing directories such as assets/, lang/, meta/, and templates/, along with config.json and schema.json. That makes it a more defensible starting point than treating every older theme name as current.
Vault and Fortune may still appear in older lists, but confirm the exact marketplace name and availability before planning a store around either one. A theme description may mention quick view, product comparison, wishlists, filtering, or a particular checkout presentation without those features being guaranteed for every theme version or store configuration. They may depend on your plan, settings, theme release, or an app.
Test the complete buying journey in a preview: search for a product, filter a category, select variants, add to cart, apply a discount, calculate shipping, and complete checkout on mobile. A visually attractive catalog is not a bargain if customers cannot find products or if an essential feature adds recurring app fees.
How to choose the cheapest template over the whole year
- List the required selling functions. Write down the number of products, variants, categories, locations, payment methods, shipping zones, and tax jurisdictions. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves.
- Price the platform. Include the plan required for ecommerce, your expected transaction fees, domain renewal, and any minimum contract period.
