Re:

Thinking of using Electrum wallet… : r/Bitcoin

Electrum is a powerful Bitcoin wallet for self-custody, but it demands careful seed management and safe downloads. Here is what to know before using it.

Electrum is a serious Bitcoin wallet, but it is not a beginner-friendly exchange account or a general-purpose crypto wallet. It gives you control of your private keys, avoids downloading the full Bitcoin blockchain, and supports advanced setups such as hardware signing, multisignature wallets, and air-gapped storage. Those advantages come with responsibility: a lost seed, compromised computer, or fake Electrum download can mean permanent loss.

For a small or regularly used Bitcoin balance, Electrum can be a strong choice. For substantial savings, use it with a hardware wallet, multisig arrangement, or offline setup rather than treating a normal desktop installation as a bank vault.

What Electrum is—and what it is not

Electrum is a non-custodial Bitcoin wallet. Its private keys remain under your control instead of being held by an exchange or wallet company. It is also a lightweight wallet: it uses Simplified Payment Verification rather than downloading the entire Bitcoin blockchain.

Electrum is designed primarily for Bitcoin. It is not an exchange, does not provide account recovery, and does not reverse transactions. If you lose both the wallet password and the recovery seed, there is no Electrum support process that can restore access.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Feature What it means in practice
Non-custodial You control the keys and are responsible for backups and security.
Lightweight You can use it without storing the full Bitcoin blockchain.
Bitcoin-focused Do not expect the multi-asset support found in many exchange apps.
Desktop and mobile options The interface is more technical than a typical beginner wallet.
SPV verification Confirmed transaction information is checked without operating a full node, although server trust is not eliminated.

Is Electrum safe?

Electrum’s design is reputable, but the safety of your installation depends heavily on your own operating practices. The most dangerous mistake is downloading a fake version. Use electrum.org and its official download infrastructure only. Do not follow a wallet-update link from a popup, forum reply, social-media account, email, or unsolicited support message.

Electrum recommends verifying downloads with GPG signatures. The exact version and filenames change, so copy them from the official download page rather than reusing an old command. The general pattern is:

wget https://download.electrum.org/VERSION/Electrum-VERSION.tar.gz
wget https://download.electrum.org/VERSION/Electrum-VERSION.tar.gz.asc
gpg --verify Electrum-VERSION.tar.gz.asc

At the time covered by the supplied release information, Electrum’s official release notes list version 4.8.0, released July 8, 2026. The public homepage may show a different version, such as 4.7.2, so check the official download page and release notes immediately before installing. Never assume a version number in an older tutorial is still current.

An antivirus warning alone does not prove that Electrum is malicious. Wallet software performs key and cryptographic operations that can trigger false positives. Source authenticity and signature verification are more useful tests than simply disabling security software because an installer was flagged.

The seed phrase matters more than the password

During setup, Electrum generates a recovery seed. Write it on paper or another durable offline medium and store it somewhere secure. Never enter it into a website, support form, chat, cloud note, screenshot, or “verification” tool.

The wallet password encrypts or protects the local wallet file. It is useful if somebody gains access to your computer, but it is not a replacement for the seed. If you forget the password, the documented recovery route is to restore the wallet from its seed and choose a new password.

Electrum’s newly generated seeds are Electrum seeds, not ordinary BIP39 seeds. This distinction causes many failed restorations. A valid-looking 12-word phrase from another wallet may restore a different, empty wallet unless you select the correct seed type and derivation path.

Back up more than twelve words when necessary

A seed alone may not describe every wallet configuration. Record the relevant details for:

  • Imported private keys or addresses.
  • Hardware-wallet accounts.
  • Non-standard derivation paths.
  • Multisig cosigners and their master public keys.
  • The wallet type and network used.

In a multisignature wallet, one cosigner’s seed is not a complete backup. You also need the other cosigners’ information to reconstruct the wallet.

How to create or restore an Electrum wallet

Creating a new standard wallet

  1. Download Electrum from the official site and verify the download if you can.
  2. Open Electrum and choose File → New/Restore.
  3. Enter a wallet filename.
  4. Select Standard wallet.
  5. Generate a new seed, write it down offline, and confirm it when prompted.
  6. Set a strong wallet-file password.
  7. Send a small test amount first and confirm that receiving and spending work as expected.

Do not photograph the seed or store it in a password manager unless you have deliberately assessed the risks of that setup. A digital copy can be exposed by cloud sync, malware, backups, or account compromise.

Restoring an existing wallet

  1. Choose File → New/Restore.
  2. Give the restored wallet a new filename.
  3. Select the appropriate wallet type.
  4. Choose I already have a seed.
  5. Enter the phrase and select the correct seed format or derivation path if Electrum asks.
  6. Set a new local password.

If the balance is empty, do not immediately conclude that the Bitcoin is gone. Check the wallet type, seed format, derivation path, network, imported keys, and—if relevant—multisig cosigners. Entering a BIP39 seed as an Electrum seed is a common cause of an apparently empty wallet.

Privacy: Electrum is not anonymous

Electrum’s non-custodial design does not make transactions private. By default, a connected Electrum server receives address subscriptions and history requests for the wallet. That server can reasonably infer that those addresses belong together. Servers can also see your IP address unless you use Tor, a VPN, or another proxy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electrum verifies confirmed transaction information using SPV, but that does not mean servers are irrelevant. A server can omit information, and Electrum relies more directly on server data for unconfirmed transactions and broadcasting.

For stronger privacy and verification, advanced users can run their own Electrum server connected to their own Bitcoin node. That is not required for ordinary use, but it reduces dependence on public servers. You should also avoid address reuse and understand that combining multiple inputs in one transaction can reveal common ownership.

Using Electrum for larger balances

A normal desktop wallet is a hot wallet: the signing keys are available to the computer when you spend. If the machine has malware, the seed or private keys may be stolen. The wallet password cannot protect funds from malware that obtains the underlying secret.

Better options for larger amounts include:

  • Hardware wallet: Electrum can act as the interface while the hardware device retains the private keys and approves transactions on its own screen.
  • Multisig: Spending requires multiple cosigners, reducing reliance on one device or seed.
  • Cold storage: Keep private keys offline and use a separate watching-only wallet for monitoring and transaction preparation.

Air-gapped workflow

In a documented cold-storage arrangement, the offline wallet holds private keys and the online wallet contains only the master public key. The online wallet creates an unsigned transaction, the offline wallet signs it, and the signed transaction returns to the online machine for broadcasting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant menu paths are:

  1. On the offline wallet, open Wallet → Information and obtain the master public key.
  2. On the online machine, choose File → New/Restore and create a standard watching-only wallet using that public key.
  3. On the online wallet, prepare the payment with Send → Preview.
  4. Transfer the unsigned transaction to the offline wallet.
  5. On the offline wallet, use Tools → Load transaction → From file, sign it, and transfer the signed transaction back.
  6. On the online wallet, use Tools → Load transaction → From File and broadcast it.

The capitalization of the “From file” label may vary between builds. A watching-only wallet cannot spend by itself; that limitation is the point of the setup.

Useful command-line operations

Electrum also has a command-line interface. These commands are useful for experienced users and automation, but test them with a small wallet before using them with meaningful funds.

electrum help
electrum help <command>
electrum daemon -d
electrum getinfo
electrum stop

To inspect or load wallets:

electrum load_wallet
electrum load_wallet -w /path/to/wallet/file
electrum list_wallets

To run a command without network access:

electrum -o listaddresses
electrum -o -w /path/to/wallet/file listaddresses

In Electrum command syntax, ! means the maximum spendable amount after the fee, ? prompts for a value, : prompts without echoing the value, and - reads an argument from standard input.

What to do after a suspected theft

If coins were stolen or the seed may have been exposed, stop using the existing wallet. Do not assume that changing the wallet password is enough. Treat the seed as compromised, clean or reinstall the computer, obtain Electrum again from the official source, and create a new wallet with a new seed. Move any remaining funds only after you have a trustworthy environment.

Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed by Electrum developers. Be especially cautious of anyone claiming they can recover stolen coins if you first provide a seed, private key, remote-access session, or payment.

Common Electrum problems

Problem Likely explanation
Forgotten password Restore from the seed and set a new password; there is no password-recovery service.
Wallet will not connect The version may be old, a server may be unavailable, or network settings may be interfering.
Balance is zero after restoration Check seed type, wallet type, derivation path, network, imported keys, and multisig data.
Watching-only wallet cannot spend Expected: it contains public information but no private keys. Sign with the offline or hardware wallet.
Unexpected plugin request Do not install arbitrary plugin ZIP files. External plugins require a separate plugin password before loading.
Old tutorial’s payment instructions fail Electrum’s Lightning and LNURL behavior changes across versions. Follow current documentation and release notes.

Who should use Electrum?

Electrum suits Bitcoin users who want self-custody, do not need a full node on the same computer, and are willing to learn seed backup, transaction fees, server limitations, and wallet restoration. It is also a good fit for users who want hardware-wallet integration, multisig, or an offline signing workflow.

It is a poor fit if you want customer-service recovery, automatic protection from a compromised computer, a simple multi-coin app, or a place to buy and sell Bitcoin. Those needs point toward an exchange or a simpler wallet—but those options introduce their own custody and counterparty risks.

FAQ

Is Electrum a good wallet for beginners?

It can be, but its interface and recovery process are more technical than many mobile wallets. Beginners should start with a small amount, verify the official download, protect the seed offline, and test restoration before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Electrum recover my wallet if I lose the password?

Not directly. Electrum does not provide password recovery. If you still have the correct seed, restore the wallet and choose a new password.

Is Electrum anonymous?

No. Public Electrum servers can associate addresses through wallet history requests and can see your IP address unless you use Tor, a VPN, or another proxy. Electrum improves self-custody, not automatic anonymity.

Should I keep life savings in a standard Electrum wallet?

A normal desktop installation is a hot wallet and is exposed to the security of the computer. For substantial holdings, consider a hardware wallet, multisig, or properly designed cold-storage setup, and keep only an amount appropriate for the wallet’s risk level.

The Bottom Line

Electrum is a capable Bitcoin wallet rather than a hands-off savings account. Its strongest features—self-custody, SPV operation, hardware support, multisig, and offline signing—are valuable if you will manage them correctly. Download only from electrum.org, verify the release where possible, keep the seed offline, remember that Electrum seeds differ from BIP39, and do not confuse a wallet password with a backup. Use a more robust custody arrangement as the balance grows.
