Yes. Getty Images acquired iStockphoto in 2006, and iStock is now a separate brand in Getty Images’ portfolio. Their distribution channels can overlap, but that does not mean the catalogs are identical, every asset is available through both services, or their prices are interchangeable.
Does Getty Images own iStock?
Yes. Getty Images’ 2007 Form 10-K says it purchased all shares of iStockphoto, Inc. on February 9, 2006, for $50 million in cash. That is a historical purchase price reported in the filing, not a current valuation or a price relevant to licensing an image. Source
Today, Getty Images presents iStock as a distinct brand within its portfolio. In company filings, iStock has been described as a value offering for creative stills and video. That describes Getty’s positioning; it does not guarantee that iStock will always be the least expensive option for a particular asset or use.
Is iStock the same as Getty Images?
No. They are separate brands within the same corporate portfolio. Their relationship includes some distribution connections, but the available company information does not establish that the two websites have identical catalogs or that all Getty customers can access every iStock file.

#1 Best Overall
iStock says accepted contributor files may be licensed through iStock, by Getty Images subscription customers, and through other distribution partners. Which channels can offer a particular file depends on customer access and the applicable contributor arrangements.
How to choose where to license an image or video
Compare the specific asset and the license offered for your intended use rather than relying on the brand name alone.
- Availability: Check whether the exact image or clip appears in the service or account you plan to use. Cross-brand distribution does not mean universal access.
- Permitted use: Getty’s licensing guidance distinguishes broad royalty-free uses from use-specific rights-managed editorial images and rights-ready video. Review the terms for the individual asset and make sure they cover your intended use.
- Total price for that use: Compare the actual offer and license. The company information cited here does not establish a blanket rule that Getty is always more expensive or iStock always cheaper.
What iStock contributors should check
For creators, the relevant question is not only where a file is uploaded, but how its distribution is governed. iStock directs contributors to its supply agreement. Review that agreement and the file’s applicable terms to understand whether it may be distributed through additional channels and whether exclusivity applies.
