The most useful documentaries and TV shows for entrepreneurs depend on what you want to understand: starting a company, running a small business, navigating work, or seeing the economic and historical forces around business. These programs offer case stories and perspectives—not complete how-to courses or proof that a featured path is typical. PBS lists selected titles on PBS.org and its app; Netflix catalog availability can vary by region and over time, so check your local service listing.

For small-business operations, growth, and decisions

START UP

START UP follows small-business owners and their personal stories. PBS describes host Gary Bredow traveling across the country to interview owners about what it takes to start a business, and lists the series on PBS.org and the PBS app. It is a fit if you want to hear how different owners describe their journeys, rather than follow one startup from idea to exit. The program’s description is promotional framing, not an independent assessment of business success. PBS’s START UP page.

Venturing: The Entrepreneurial Challenge

This PBS archive series takes a historical look at how small businesses start, grow, and mature. Its episode topics include running a business, buying into or selling out of a company, going global, technology, and growth financing—useful themes if you want a broad menu of traditional small-business questions. PBS says the series first aired nationwide in 1992 on more than 120 public television stations; that is a historical broadcast detail, not a current station count. PBS archive page for Venturing.

For startup formation, uncertainty, and founder stories

The Dreamers and I

This PBS documentary follows three immigrant entrepreneurs over ten years in a Silicon Valley “hacker house,” showing both the promise and pressure of startup life. PBS characterizes their environment as “the cutthroat world of the American startup”; that is the program page’s language, not a neutral measure of every startup ecosystem. Choose it for a multi-person founder narrative rather than a step-by-step guide to incorporation, funding, or product development. PBS lists it on PBS.org and the PBS app. PBS page for The Dreamers and I.

#1 Best Overall

Generation: Freedom

Generation: Freedom centers independent creators trying to turn their passions into sustainable work, including stories of building without outside funding or a clear roadmap. It may resonate with freelancers, creators, and founders exploring self-directed work. The stories are examples, not evidence that avoiding outside capital or operating without a plan is the right choice for every business. PBS lists the program on PBS.org and its app. PBS page for Generation: Freedom.

Trauma to Triumph—the Rise of the Entrepreneur

This two-part PBS series profiles people who experienced severe adversity and later pursued entrepreneurship. It may be meaningful for viewers interested in resilience and personal accounts, but an inspirational story should not be read as evidence that entrepreneurship is a reliable remedy for trauma, hardship, or financial instability. PBS lists it for streaming on PBS.org and its app. PBS page for Trauma to Triumph.

For business history, representation, and economic context

Boss: The Black Experience in Business

This two-hour documentary traces African American entrepreneurship across 150 years, according to the film’s 2019 THIRTEEN/PBS description. Directed by Stanley Nelson, it expands the view beyond contemporary startup culture to a longer history of business ownership and leadership. Its stated historical scope comes from the program description. THIRTEEN/PBS page for Boss.

Saving Capitalism

This 2017 Netflix documentary features former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich discussing changes in the U.S. economy. It is better suited to viewers seeking context about the economic system in which businesses operate than to someone looking for a startup case study or operating manual. Netflix availability depends on the viewer’s region and current catalog. Netflix page for Saving Capitalism.

Working: What We Do All Day

This 2023 Netflix documentary limited series has four episodes about the meaning and conditions of work, with stories touching on service jobs, career aspirations, and management choices. Entrepreneurs can use it as a prompt to think about workers and the human effects of organizational decisions, rather than as a guide to starting a company. Check Netflix’s current regional listing. Netflix page for Working: What We Do All Day.

Future of Work

PBS describes Future of Work as both a three-part documentary film and a separate six-part digital docuseries. The programs look at adults navigating changes in work, including debt, gig work, remote work, and career identity. That makes them relevant to questions about labor and workplace change, not a founder playbook. PBS page for Future of Work.

Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates

This three-part Netflix documentary explores Bill Gates’s life, work, and philanthropy, including achievements and setbacks. It offers a portrait of one prominent business leader; it cannot establish that his decisions or career path generalize to other entrepreneurs. Check the current Netflix catalog where you live. Netflix page for Inside Bill’s Brain.
