Amazon did not ban every form of Prime sharing. The specific change is narrower: Amazon ended Prime Invitee on October 1, 2025. That program allowed a Prime member to share the Prime shipping benefit with someone who lived at a different address.
Amazon now directs qualifying household members to Amazon Family, where each adult uses a separate Amazon account. For people outside the same household, the practical result is different: they generally need their own Prime membership to receive Prime shipping benefits.
What Amazon actually changed
Prime Invitee was a way for a Prime member to extend the shipping benefit to another person who did not share the member’s primary address. Amazon retired that program on October 1, 2025.
That does not amount to a blanket ban on sharing a Prime account, nor has Amazon announced a Netflix-style system that automatically checks every user’s home Wi-Fi or location. The confirmed policy change concerns the discontinued Prime Invitee shipping benefit.
#1 Best Overall
Amazon replaced the arrangement with Amazon Family, which is intended for people who live in the same household.
Who can use Amazon Family
One Prime member can share many Prime benefits with one additional adult. The second adult must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Live in the same household as the Prime member
- Have a separate Amazon account
An Amazon Family can also include up to four children. Children cannot use Amazon Family to shop on Amazon.
Amazon Photos has a separate allowance: photos can be shared with up to five additional adults. That limit is not the same as the one-adult limit for sharing Prime benefits.

Amazon says Amazon Family can share the following benefits with the eligible additional adult, subject to the terms of each service:
| Benefit | What the household may share |
|---|---|
| Delivery | Fast, free Prime delivery |
| Deals | Prime Day, Prime Big Deal Days and other Prime shopping discounts |
| Prime Video | Access for one additional adult and up to four children |
| Reading | Selected eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, comics and manga |
| Amazon Music | Streaming access with one additional adult |
| Grubhub+ | A free Grubhub+ membership with one additional adult |
| Fuel savings | Savings at participating bp, Amoco and ampm locations |
| Amazon Photos | Storage sharing with up to five additional adults |
Only one adult in the Amazon Family needs to pay for Prime. The other adult does not need a separate Prime subscription while the Family arrangement remains active and eligible.

Separate accounts are the point
Amazon Family is benefit sharing, not a request to hand over the primary member’s password. Each adult signs in to an individual Amazon account. Amazon says adults using their own accounts cannot see one another’s orders or content.
That separation matters financially and for security. Giving another person the password to the primary account could expose:

If two household adults currently use one login, moving to separate accounts through Amazon Family is safer than continuing to share the credentials. It also makes it easier to identify which person placed an order or changed an account setting.
How to set up Amazon Family
From Amazon’s website
- Open Amazon and select Accounts & Lists.
- Select Your Account.
- Choose Your Amazon Family.
- Under the Family page, select Add Adult or Add a Child.
For an adult, Amazon provides an email invitation option or an option for both people to sign up together and verify their accounts. The management page uses the Members and Sharing tabs.
From the Amazon Shopping app
- Tap the Me tab.
- Select Your Account.
- Tap Manage Your Amazon Family.
- Choose Add Adult or Add a Child.
Do not confuse New: Add a new member, which Amazon lists for creating a shopping profile, with adding a second adult who receives shared Prime benefits. A shopping profile is not the same as an Amazon Family adult membership.
What changes for someone living at another address
Someone who used Prime Invitee from a different household no longer receives that Prime shipping benefit through the old program. Amazon encouraged affected users to purchase their own Prime membership.

The temporary promotional price reported when Prime Invitee ended was $14.99 for one year, but that offer was available only through December 31, 2025. It should not be treated as a current discount.
Amazon’s cited regular U.S. Prime price is $14.99 per month or $139 per year. At those prices, the annual plan costs $40.88 less than paying for 12 months separately:
- Monthly plan: $14.99 × 12 = $179.88
- Annual plan: $139
- Difference: $40.88 before taxes or other changes
Whether an individual subscription is worthwhile depends on how often that person orders, uses Prime Video or Music, takes advantage of Prime deals, or uses other included services. Someone who places only a few orders a year should compare the membership cost with the value of the shipping and other benefits actually used.
Leaving an Amazon Family
To leave, open Manage Your Amazon Family and select Leave beneath the person’s avatar name.
After a member leaves:
- The primary Prime member keeps the Prime benefits.
- The departing member loses access to shared Family Library content.
- The departing member can switch to a new Amazon Family only once every 12 months.
- The person may rejoin the previous Amazon Family at any time.
The current 12-month rule should not be confused with older Amazon Household guidance that referred to a 180-day waiting period. The newer Amazon Family instructions use the 12-month limit for switching to a new Family.

Amazon’s Prime Video rules say one Amazon account can stream up to three titles at the same time, with the same title generally limited to two devices simultaneously. Limits can vary by region and by third-party subscription.

Claims to ignore
| Claim | More accurate explanation |
|---|---|
| “Amazon is banning all Prime account sharing.” | Too broad. Prime Invitee ended, but Amazon Family still supports benefit sharing with one additional adult in the same household. |
| “Amazon Family includes four teens.” | The current U.S. page lists one additional adult and up to four children. Earlier coverage about grandfathered teens is not the current standard setup. |
| “The old 180-day cooldown still applies.” | Current guidance says a person can switch to a new Amazon Family once every 12 months, while rejoining the previous Family is allowed. |
| “The $14.99 first-year offer is still available.” | That reported promotion expired on December 31, 2025. |
| “Amazon checks everyone’s home network like Netflix.” | The documented policy change does not establish a Netflix-style location-verification system. |
FAQ
Can I still share Prime with someone who lives at another address?
The Prime Invitee program that provided Prime shipping benefits to someone at another address ended on October 1, 2025. Amazon Family is intended for one additional adult who lives in the same household.
Does the second adult need a separate Amazon account?
Yes. Amazon Family is designed around separate adult accounts. Do not give another person the password to the primary account.
How many adults can share Prime through Amazon Family?
One Prime member can share many Prime benefits with one additional adult. Amazon Photos has a separate sharing limit of up to five additional adults.
Is Amazon banning Prime Video password sharing?
The confirmed change is the end of Prime Invitee, which concerned Prime shipping benefits. Amazon has not announced a general Prime Video password-sharing ban in connection with this change.
The Bottom Line
Amazon’s crackdown is targeted, not universal. It ended Prime Invitee for sharing Prime shipping with someone outside the household and replaced it with Amazon Family for one additional adult living at the same address. Household members should use separate Amazon accounts; people in different households should compare the current $14.99 monthly or $139 annual Prime price with the value they actually receive.
