When did Dell’s five-day sales rule begin?
Reuters reported that the expectation took effect Monday, September 30, 2024. It replaced the prior three-day schedule described in the memo. The report characterized the policy as applying to Dell’s global sales team members who were able to work from a company office. Reuters reported the memo and start date.

Field sales employees could meet the five-day expectation by spending time with customers and partners or working from a Dell Technologies office. Employees who could not go to an office were told to prioritize in-person time with customers and partners.

Remote sales employees
Sales employees unable to work from a Dell office were told to continue working remotely. Reporting described remote work as an exception rather than the routine arrangement. The internal memo itself was not published as a public original document; these terms were reported through news coverage, including CNBC’s account of the policy.
Why did Dell give for the change?
Dell’s reported rationale included collaboration, skill development, real-time feedback, and creating a high-energy sales environment. The memo also asserted that “our data showed that sales teams are more productive when onsite,” as quoted in coverage by Reuters and Ars Technica.

That is Dell’s claim, not a quantified or independently demonstrated result in the reporting. The coverage does not disclose the data, measurement method, comparison period, or size of any productivity difference. Dell’s broader stated aims, as relayed by Ars Technica and The Register, included innovation, customer and partner service, in-person connection, and market leadership.
What did later reporting say about enforcement?
Moneycontrol reported on December 23, 2025, that a subsequent instruction from North American Commercial Sales vice president Jackie Miller applied to onsite-classified sales employees at three hubs: Round Rock, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; and Oklahoma City. Those employees were reportedly expected to be in the office five days a week for at least eight hours each day. The account attributed the tighter rule to internal checks and described limited case-by-case flexibility. Moneycontrol’s report covers the later regional instruction.

The eight-hour term belongs to that later report; it should not be read back into Dell’s September 2024 global sales memo. The reported 2025 instruction is limited to the three named North American hubs and onsite-classified employees.

Available reporting does not establish whether that later instruction expanded to other regions, whether Dell changed it afterward, or the complete worldwide policy in force on October 8, 2026. It is therefore not possible to infer a current universal Dell sales attendance rule from these reports.
