The real savings come from using an existing Windows entitlement, taking Microsoft’s genuine upgrade path, and treating Adobe’s offer as a short trial—not a free subscription.
That distinction matters financially. A downloaded Windows ISO costs nothing, but it does not automatically include activation. Photoshop’s desktop trial requires billing information and begins charging after seven days unless you cancel.

How to get Windows without paying again
Option 1: Upgrade a licensed Windows 10 PC to Windows 11
Microsoft offers Windows 11 at no additional charge for eligible devices running genuine Windows 10. The computer still has to pass Microsoft’s hardware requirements. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so staying on Windows 10 is no longer the normal supported route for free security updates.

Check the machine before attempting the upgrade:
- Install Microsoft’s PC Health Check app, or open Start > Settings > Windows Update and look for an upgrade-eligibility message.
- Back up important files. An upgrade normally preserves data, but a backup protects against failed updates and hardware problems.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Start the Windows 11 upgrade only if Windows 10 is genuinely activated.
An older computer can run Windows 10 and still fail Windows 11’s TPM, Secure Boot, processor, or other requirements. Bypassing those checks with unofficial scripts can leave you with an unsupported installation and is not the same as obtaining a licensed copy.
Option 2: Reinstall Windows on a computer that is already licensed
If a PC previously had an activated copy of Windows 10 or Windows 11, you can usually reinstall the same edition without purchasing another license. This is useful when replacing a failing drive, removing malware, or starting over with a cluttered computer.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Confirm that Windows reports an activated status.
- If the option appears, select Add an account and link the digital license to your Microsoft account.
- Create installation media from Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page.
- Install the edition that matches the existing entitlement. A Home license must be reinstalled as Home; a Pro license must be reinstalled as Pro.
- When Setup requests a product key, select I don’t have a product key.
- After installation, connect to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license.
Windows should reactivate online when the installation, edition, and hardware match the existing license. A major motherboard replacement can complicate reactivation because Microsoft may treat it as a different device.
Option 3: Download Microsoft’s official installer
Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page provides three official methods:
- Windows 11 Installation Assistant: upgrades the computer currently in use.
- Create Windows 11 Installation Media: creates a bootable USB drive or DVD.
- Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO): downloads an ISO for manual installation or a virtual machine.

- Select Accept.
- At What do you want to do?, choose Create installation media for another PC.
- Select Next.
- Choose the language, Windows edition, and 64-bit architecture.
- Select a blank USB drive, or choose the option to create an ISO.
The USB drive will be erased, so copy its files elsewhere first. Microsoft’s current Installation Assistant and Media Creation Tool support x64 PCs, not Arm-based computers. Use the official Windows 11 download page, not a torrent or an installer hosted by an unknown site.
Free Windows download does not mean free Windows license
This is the most common source of surprise costs. Microsoft makes installation media available to download, but the download itself does not grant a license. A computer that has never had an activated Windows entitlement still needs a valid product key or digital license.
You can choose I don’t have a product key during setup, but that only postpones activation. It does not turn an unlicensed installation into a free one. Windows may continue to display activation notices and restrict some personalization settings.
Some PCs that originally shipped with Windows have a product key stored in firmware. Setup may detect it automatically. That applies to the license attached to that computer—not to every computer on which you might install Windows.
How to use Photoshop legally for free
Option 1: Use Adobe’s seven-day desktop trial
Adobe currently offers a seven-day trial of the full Photoshop app for desktop, web, and mobile. Adobe requires billing information, and the trial converts to a paid Creative Cloud plan after seven days unless canceled. Adobe says each person is eligible for only one seven-day Photoshop trial.

Adobe’s US page currently lists Photoshop at US$22.99 per month after the trial, although prices and promotions vary by country and can change.
- Open Adobe’s Photoshop free-trial page and select Start Free Trial.
- Choose the applicable category: For Individuals, For Students and Teachers, or For Teams and Businesses.
- Select the plan and billing option.
- Enter your email address and billing details.
- Sign in to or create an Adobe account.
- Open the Creative Cloud application, find Photoshop, and select Download.
Put the cancellation deadline on your calendar for the sixth day rather than waiting until the last few hours. Also save any work or exports you need before the trial ends.

Cancel the Adobe trial before it bills you
For a subscription purchased directly from Adobe:
- Sign in to your Adobe account.
- Select Manage plan for the active Photoshop plan.
- Select Cancel your plan.
- Choose Continue to cancel.
- Select a cancellation reason and continue.
- Review the cancellation details and select Confirm cancellation.
- Keep Adobe’s cancellation-confirmation email.
If the trial has already converted to a paid plan, Adobe says most plans qualify for a full refund when canceled within 14 days of the initial purchase. A purchase made through Apple, Google, or Microsoft must generally be canceled through that provider instead.
Canceling the subscription does not delete the Adobe account. After cancellation, paid-app access ends when the applicable period ends. Creative Cloud storage is reduced to 5 GB, and Adobe gives users 30 days to reduce storage usage if they exceed that limit.
Option 2: Install the free Photoshop mobile app
Adobe offers Photoshop mobile apps for iPhone and Android at no charge. This can be enough for quick cropping, selections, retouching, or social-media edits. It is not a permanent free copy of desktop Photoshop, and premium mobile features require a subscription.

Students do not automatically receive Photoshop free
Adobe does not make desktop Photoshop permanently free for students. Students and teachers may qualify for a seven-day trial or a discounted Creative Cloud plan, subject to Adobe’s eligibility checks and current pricing.

Unlicensed software can be expensive even when no card is charged. A compromised installer may expose banking passwords, saved browser sessions, tax documents, or client files. For a personal-finance decision, the risk is not worth confusing “free download” with “free, licensed product.”
FAQ
Can I install Windows 11 without a product key?
Yes, you can select “I don’t have a product key” during installation. However, the computer still needs a valid digital license or product key for activation. The installation option does not create a free license.
Can I get Photoshop desktop permanently free?
Not through Adobe’s official current offer. The full desktop app has a seven-day trial that converts to a paid plan unless canceled. Adobe’s free mobile app is a separate product with premium features.

Will a Windows Home license activate Windows Pro?
No. The installed edition must match the license. A Windows Home license normally activates Home, not Pro.
What happens if I forget to cancel the Photoshop trial?
Adobe can convert the trial into a paid Creative Cloud plan and charge the billing method you provided. Cancel through Adobe before the seven days end, or through Apple, Google, or Microsoft if you subscribed there. The Bottom Line
The legitimate Windows savings are real when you already own a qualifying license: upgrade an eligible activated Windows 10 PC or reinstall the same Windows edition on licensed hardware. Microsoft’s installer is free, but activation is not automatically free.
For Photoshop, use the seven-day Adobe trial only if you are prepared to cancel it, or use the free mobile app for lighter editing. There is no legal permanent desktop Photoshop giveaway hiding behind a crack, leaked key, or “activator.”
