A password protects the local app, but it does not replace the Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP); anyone who obtains the SRP can generally restore the wallet elsewhere.
Use the following 10-step checklist to reduce the most common risks: fake wallet software, phishing, excessive token allowances, compromised devices, and unsafe recovery practices.
1. Install MetaMask from an official source
Begin at metamask.io and select Get MetaMask. You can also use the official MetaMask listing in the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, Apple App Store, or Google Play.
Avoid advertisements, unsolicited links, direct-download websites, unofficial GitHub builds, and wallet files sent through chat or email. Fake wallet extensions and apps are designed to capture recovery phrases and passwords.

Before installing, check the publisher, reviews, download source, and domain character by character. If you are unsure, navigate to metamask.io manually rather than clicking a search ad or social-media link.
2. Back up the correct Secret Recovery Phrase
The SRP controls the wallet and the accounts derived from it. In the current MetaMask Extension interface, open:
- Menu → Settings → Security and password
- Select Manage wallet recovery.
- Select the relevant SRP, click Reveal, and answer the security questions.
- Enter your password, then press and hold Hold to reveal SRP.
On Mobile, use Menu → Settings → Security and privacy → Reveal Secret Recovery Phrase.
Write the words down offline and store the backup somewhere private and protected from fire, water, theft, and unauthorized access. Do not photograph it, save it in cloud storage, email it to yourself, or paste it into a notes app connected to the internet. MetaMask cannot recover a lost SRP, and the phrase cannot be edited or changed.
Important: restoring an SRP restores accounts derived from that phrase. It does not automatically restore accounts imported using separate private keys or JSON files, nor hardware-wallet accounts. Those accounts must be added again through their own recovery method.
Never type the SRP into a website, support form, chat, pop-up, or dapp. Legitimate situations in which MetaMask may require it include initial wallet confirmation, restoring a wallet, and certain password-reset flows within the wallet.
3. Use a unique MetaMask password
Choose a long, unique password that you do not use for email, banking, exchanges, or social accounts. A password manager can generate and store it securely.

For a wallet created with an SRP, the MetaMask password normally unlocks that particular local installation. The SRP is what restores the wallet on another device. Losing the password is inconvenient; losing the SRP can mean losing access permanently.

4. Turn on auto-lock and log out on shared devices
Auto-lock limits the damage if someone gains access to an unlocked computer or phone. In the Extension and Mobile apps, open Menu → Settings → Security and password → Auto lock, then choose a short inactivity period appropriate to your use.
Lock MetaMask whenever you step away. On a shared, borrowed, or public device, select Log out from the wallet menu instead of leaving the extension unlocked. Avoid using a wallet containing meaningful funds on a public computer at all.
5. Keep MetaMask, your browser, and your operating system updated
Security fixes are useful only if they reach the software you actually use. Check the MetaMask version through Settings → About.

Be cautious with manually installed or developer builds. They do not necessarily update through the normal production channel. If you switch back to the production extension, back up the SRP first; local wallet data may not carry over as you expect.

6. Enable and understand Security Alerts
MetaMask Security Alerts are currently enabled by default in the Extension and Mobile apps. To check them, go to Menu → Settings → Transactions → Security Alerts.
Alerts can classify websites, addresses, tokens, and transaction requests as Warning or Malicious. Treat a malicious result as a stop sign: do not connect, sign, or send funds. A warning calls for independent verification of the URL, contract address, and the project’s official communication channels.

These alerts are risk signals, not guarantees. A warning does not prove that a transaction is fraudulent, and the absence of a warning does not prove that it is safe. When the feature is enabled, transaction and signature data may be sent to MetaMask or Blockaid for analysis. You remain responsible for reviewing what you approve.
7. Verify every dapp, domain, address, and signature
Only approve a wallet request that follows an action you intentionally started. MetaMask should not spontaneously open a legitimate transaction-confirmation window while you are doing nothing.
Before confirming, check:
- The domain, including spelling, punctuation, and the top-level domain.
- That you reached the site from an official project source rather than a copied social-media post.
- The destination address against an official project page or documentation.
- The assets being sent, the network being used, and the requested permissions.
- The exact transaction or signature message, especially when it asks you to sign instead of send.

8. Set limited token spending caps
Connecting a wallet to a dapp is not the same as granting it permission to spend a token. A token approval, however, can allow a smart contract to transfer approved tokens from your wallet. Unlimited approvals create unnecessary exposure if the contract is compromised or malicious.
When MetaMask displays a token-approval request, click the pencil icon beside the spending cap, enter only the amount you need, and click Confirm. For a one-time purchase, there is rarely a good reason to approve an unlimited balance.

Review existing permissions in MetaMask Portfolio:
- Open MetaMask Portfolio and choose the Overview tab.
- Switch to Spending Caps.
- Find the allowance and click the revoke control beside it.
- Submit the revocation transaction in MetaMask.
Revoking an allowance is an on-chain transaction and requires gas. MetaMask currently lists support for this Portfolio feature on Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, BNB Chain, Optimism, and Base.
9. Disconnect unused dapps—and revoke approvals separately
Remove connections to sites you no longer use. In the Extension, open Account view → menu → Dapp connections, select the dapp, and click Disconnect.
On Mobile, open Explore, visit the dapp, tap the account icon, and select Disconnect all. You can also use Settings → Security & Privacy → Clear privacy data to remove dapp connections for the selected account.
Disconnection does not revoke token approvals already granted to a smart contract. Treat these as two separate maintenance tasks:

10. Use a hardware wallet for significant holdings
A hardware wallet keeps its signing keys in a dedicated device and can reduce the risk from malware on your everyday computer. It is particularly useful for long-term holdings or amounts that would materially affect your finances if lost.
Create a new SRP directly on the hardware wallet. Do not import your existing MetaMask SRP into it. Importing the existing phrase into an internet-connected environment exposes the hardware wallet’s recovery phrase and defeats the main security benefit.
Instead, connect the hardware wallet to MetaMask, create or access the hardware-derived account, and transfer assets to that account. Keep the hardware device, its recovery backup, and its PIN protected separately.

What to do after a suspected compromise
If your SRP or a private key may have been exposed, changing the MetaMask password is not enough. The compromised phrase cannot be changed. Using a trusted device, create a new wallet with a new SRP and move remaining assets to accounts derived from it. Move quickly, but verify every destination address before signing.
If a transaction is already unauthorized, document the wallet address, transaction hashes, dapp URL, and timestamps. Do not send additional funds to anyone claiming they can “recover” the loss.
Scams that imitate support
- MetaMask cannot recover a lost SRP.
- Official support will never ask for your SRP, private key, password, or payment to unlock funds.
- MetaMask says it has no phone number and will not contact users first by phone, direct message, or email.
Use MetaMask’s official support site by navigating to it yourself. Never follow recovery instructions from an unsolicited account.
Common mistakes to avoid

FAQ
Can MetaMask recover my Secret Recovery Phrase?
No. MetaMask cannot recover a lost SRP. Store the phrase offline before you need it, and ignore anyone offering recovery in exchange for money or additional information.

Does changing my MetaMask password secure an exposed wallet?
No. If the SRP or a private key was exposed, create a new wallet with a new SRP and transfer assets to it. The old phrase remains compromised even after the password changes.
Does disconnecting a dapp revoke its token approval?
No. Disconnecting ends the wallet connection, but an existing token allowance can remain on-chain. Review and revoke allowances separately through MetaMask Portfolio or another trusted approval-management tool.
Is a hardware wallet safe if I import my MetaMask SRP into it?
That removes much of the hardware wallet’s security advantage. Create a new wallet and SRP directly on the hardware device, then transfer assets from MetaMask to the hardware-derived account.
The Bottom Line
The highest-impact protections are straightforward: obtain MetaMask from an official source, protect the SRP offline, use a unique password and auto-lock, verify every request, limit token allowances, revoke stale approvals, and keep valuable holdings in a newly created hardware-wallet account. Security alerts can help identify risk, but no warning system can replace careful transaction review.
