Equinix opened its MU4 data center in Aschheim, near Munich, on February 7, 2022—not in 2026. The company reported investing US$90 million in the initial building, whose first phase offered more than 2,250 square meters of colocation space and capacity for more than 825 cabinets. MU4 is part of Equinix’s carrier-neutral Munich platform, and the site’s expansion story continues: a 2025 Equinix filing lists a further MU4 phase with expected delivery in Q2 2028.

What Equinix opened near Munich

MU4 is an Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Aschheim, in the Munich area of Bavaria. The February 2022 announcement described the US$90 million as Equinix’s investment in the new building; it should not be read as the lifetime cost of the campus or of later phases. The opening phase supplied more than 2,250 m² of colocation space and capacity for more than 825 cabinets. Those figures describe the initial phase, not the site’s eventual total capacity. Equinix’s February 7, 2022 announcement gives the opening details.

Colocation lets organizations install and operate their own servers and networking equipment in a third-party data center, using the facility’s power, cooling, physical security, and operating support. MU4’s launch announcement presented it as a carrier-neutral site serving sectors including automotive, industrial, financial, and healthcare businesses.

Why Munich matters to data-center customers

Equinix describes Munich as a center for automotive, engineering, finance, healthcare, media, and technology businesses. For companies with staff, factories, customers, or partners in Bavaria, locating infrastructure in the region can shorten network paths to local operations and provide a place to connect with carriers, cloud services, and other businesses. These are Equinix’s market-positioning claims, not a guarantee that every customer will see lower latency or better performance. Equinix’s Munich facilities page sets out its current view of the metro.

Munich can complement Frankfurt rather than replace it. Frankfurt is Germany’s larger interconnection and financial hub; Munich may be a more convenient location for workloads tied to Bavarian industry and enterprises. The right choice depends on where users and systems are, which networks and cloud connections are available at the specific facility, and whether a second site in another metro is needed for disaster recovery.

What carrier-neutral interconnection means

Carrier-neutral generally means customers can choose among multiple telecommunications carriers and network providers rather than relying exclusively on the data-center operator’s network. At a colocation site, interconnection can include physical cross-connects to other tenants or providers, as well as connections to cloud and network services. Equinix identifies colocation, interconnection, and Equinix Fabric among the services associated with its platform.

That choice can help with hybrid-cloud and multicloud designs, or with connecting colocated equipment to business partners. It does not automatically make connectivity cheaper. Buyers should account for one-time installation and cross-connect charges, recurring ports and bandwidth, cloud-egress fees, and any service-specific costs.

Services and availability to confirm

Equinix’s current Munich materials list services including Equinix Fabric, Network Edge, Equinix Precision Time, Internet Access, Metro Connect, campus cross-connects, fiber connectivity, and Smart Hands. The exact products and configurations available to a customer at MU4 should be confirmed with Equinix. A metro-level connection or listing does not establish that a particular cloud provider’s compute region is physically inside MU4. Equinix’s colocation availability documentation lists MU4 in Aschheim and describes 24/7 on-site operational coverage.

Equinix’s current Munich page advertises 99.9999%+ guaranteed uptime. Treat that as a company claim and review the specific service-level agreement, exclusions, maintenance terms, and customer responsibilities; a marketing uptime figure is not the same as a particular Tier certification or protection against every outage.

Sustainability claims and their limits

Equinix linked MU4 to its corporate goal of climate neutrality by 2030 and described sustainability innovations at the facility. A corporate target is not evidence that MU4 itself is carbon-neutral today. Equinix’s current Germany page says its German sites have 100% renewable-energy coverage. That portfolio-level coverage claim does not by itself mean electricity is generated on site, that the facility has zero operational emissions, or that it has no water or other environmental impacts. Equinix’s Germany facilities page presents the current country-level figures and claim.

MU4’s development since the opening

MU4 was an initial operational phase, not necessarily the final build-out. Equinix’s 2025 Form 10-K lists a MU4 Phase 3 project with 1,375 additional cabinets and 342,000 square feet in the project table, with expected delivery in Q2 2028. This is a forecast in a company filing, not confirmation that the phase is already operating or that delivery is guaranteed. Equinix also reported opening projects in Munich during the period covered by its Q2 2024 results. Neither expansion plans nor openings alone establish facility utilization or profitability. Equinix’s 2025 Form 10-K and Q2 2024 results provide that later context.

Equinix said at MU4’s opening that it had invested more than US$1.6 billion in Germany and operated 12 data centers across Munich, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Hamburg. Those are historical figures from February 2022, not current totals. Equinix’s current Germany page publishes a count of 15 data centers and approximately 1.1 million square feet (103,000 m²) of colocation capacity; the page does not give a precise as-of date for those figures.

A separate Munich announcement illustrates why facility names matter: AWS said in July 2025 that its Data Transfer Terminal was inside Equinix MU1, not MU4. It is part of the wider Munich connectivity ecosystem, but it is not evidence of an AWS terminal in MU4. AWS’s announcement identifies MU1 as the location.

How to assess MU4 for an enterprise deployment

For buyers, the headline investment is less useful than a facility-specific assessment of operating fit and total cost. Request a quote and written technical details for the intended deployment; no dependable public MU4 price is established in the cited materials.

  1. Map workload geography. Compare the location of users, factories, offices, cloud regions, and partner systems. Consider whether Munich, Frankfurt, another metro, or a separate disaster-recovery location best fits the design.
  2. Confirm connectivity at MU4. Ask which carriers and cloud connections are available in the exact facility, what cross-connects and ports cost, and whether Equinix Fabric adds value over direct provider networking.
  3. Specify power and cooling needs. Obtain available cabinet power levels and written confirmation of support for high-density or liquid-cooled equipment. A general claim about AI readiness does not establish a particular power envelope or cooling configuration.
  4. Review resilience and service terms. Check redundancy design, maintenance processes, service-level commitments, exclusions, access arrangements, and what remains the customer’s responsibility. For disaster recovery, assess geographic separation rather than assuming two sites in the Munich area provide independent protection.
  5. Check legal and operational requirements. German colocation may help meet a location requirement, but it does not alone establish regulatory compliance. Review access controls, encryption, processors, backups, and cross-border data transfers.
  6. Calculate full lifecycle cost. Include cabinet or cage rental, power, cross-connects, network ports, cloud transfer, installation, remote hands, shipping and receiving, security, migration, contract minimums, and exit costs.
  7. Validate support coverage. Confirm Smart Hands scope and charges, on-site coverage, access windows, spare-parts handling, delivery procedures, and emergency response.

When MU4 may or may not fit

  • Potentially suitable: enterprises that value carrier choice, private cloud or network interconnection, and proximity to Bavarian industrial or business operations.
  • Potentially less suitable: very small deployments that do not need physical infrastructure or interconnection; cost-sensitive workloads served adequately by a public-cloud-only design; or workloads whose users and dependencies are centered elsewhere.
  • Needs written confirmation: deployments requiring unusually high cabinet power, specialized cooling, or a specific resilience or compliance standard.
