Samsung’s position in China is exceptionally weak: IDC says its total smartphone shipments fell 60.8% year over year in Q2 2026, leaving it with 0.1% of the market, down from 0.4% a year earlier. But that figure covers all Samsung smartphones, not Galaxy Z foldables alone. The available evidence supports saying Samsung’s foldable business has been squeezed in China; it does not establish that retail sales of its foldables fell by 60.8%.
What the latest China figures do—and do not—show
IDC’s Q2 2026 data describes a collapse in Samsung’s overall China smartphone shipments, not a foldable-only sales crash. Shipments measure phones entering the channel; they are not necessarily units bought by end customers. IDC puts Samsung’s share of total China smartphone shipments at 0.1% in Q2 2026, compared with 0.4% in Q2 2025, and reports a 60.8% year-over-year shipment decline. Because the starting share was already small, that steep percentage decline should not be mistaken for Samsung having lost a large portion of the entire Chinese smartphone market. IDC’s Q2 2026 China market analysis does not give a matching decline for Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip retail sales.
Several different measures can be confused when a headline says “sales”:
- Total smartphone shipments: Samsung phones shipped into China’s sales channels, across product types.
- Foldable shipments or sell-through: Foldable devices shipped or purchased by consumers; those are distinct measures and require foldable-specific data.
- Foldable-category share: Samsung’s portion of China’s foldable market, not its share of all smartphones.
- Panel procurement: A supply-chain indicator of display panels sourced for devices. It can signal production plans, but it is not a count of completed phones sold to consumers.
The strongest recent number therefore establishes that Samsung’s China phone business is near the margins of the market. It makes a weak foldable position plausible, but cannot quantify foldable retail sales by itself.

What the foldable-specific evidence says
There is evidence of pressure on Samsung’s foldable operation, but it is older and indirect. Counterpoint reported that Samsung’s foldable-panel procurement fell by more than 20% in 2024, reaching its lowest level since 2021. That is a supply-chain estimate, not verified China retail sell-through. The same Counterpoint outlook forecast Samsung would recover to more than half of the global foldable market in 2025, while remaining below its 2022 and 2023 volume levels. That was a forecast, not confirmation of the eventual result. Counterpoint’s 2024–25 foldable outlook is useful context, but does not provide a current, comparable China retail-sales figure for Samsung foldables.
That distinction matters for interpreting the word “nosedived.” A fall in panel procurement can precede or reflect changing production plans; shipments can be affected by inventory and launch timing; retail sell-through reflects purchases by consumers. Without a current China foldable-brand sales series, those measures cannot be substituted for one another.

China’s foldable market is being reshaped, not simply disappearing
China’s foldable competition includes strong domestic makers and designs beyond the conventional book-style and clamshell formats. Counterpoint’s account of China’s 2024 foldable market highlighted Huawei’s strengthening position, including attention around its triple-fold device, while OPPO and vivo had discontinued certain clamshell products. That points to a market changing shape and competitors making different product bets—not proof that Chinese consumers have abandoned foldables. Counterpoint’s China foldable-market analysis discusses those shifts.
For the wider China smartphone market, Counterpoint’s brand data identifies Huawei, Apple, OPPO, vivo, Honor and Xiaomi among the major players; Samsung is not among the leading brands in its published China share view. That broader ranking helps explain Samsung’s difficult competitive setting, but it is not a foldable-market ranking and should not be read as one. Counterpoint’s China smartphone-share page provides that wider-market context.

Nor does the evidence support saying that foldables are declining everywhere. IDC forecasts global foldable smartphone shipments to grow 20% year over year in 2026. Counterpoint forecasts global foldable-panel shipments to rise about 24% that year and Samsung to account for roughly 31% of foldable-panel procurement. These are global forecasts; the panel figure is a procurement estimate, not a measure of China retail sales or Samsung’s China foldable share. IDC’s smartphone market outlook and Counterpoint’s 2026 foldable-panel outlook indicate expected category growth, not a guaranteed outcome.

The evidence points to a structural competitive problem rather than a single model failure. Domestic makers compete with established local brand presence, retail and carrier relationships, locally integrated services, and aggressive pricing. They also offer camera-focused premium phones and a wider range of foldable approaches. Those advantages give Chinese buyers alternatives tailored to the local market, while Samsung’s already small overall smartphone footprint limits how much its foldables can rely on its broader ecosystem and distribution.
Market conditions also complicate quarter-to-quarter comparisons. IDC says China’s overall smartphone sales during the 618 shopping festival in 2026 fell nearly 15% year over year. Separately, Counterpoint reported that China’s smartphone market declined 5% year over year in Q1 2026, citing weak subsidy effects and price increases as pressures on demand. Those figures describe the wider market, not Samsung foldables specifically, but they show why a quarterly shipment result should not automatically be treated as a permanent product verdict. Counterpoint’s China smartphone-market data covers the Q1 context.
Launch timing matters as well. Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 globally in July 2025 and announced the Fold7 in China on July 9, 2025. Launch quarters can differ from later quarters because of channel stocking, inventory adjustments, promotions, and consumers waiting for new devices. A single quarterly decline does not isolate any one of those effects, and the available figures do not establish whether the Fold7 or Flip7 succeeded or failed in China. Samsung’s dates are documented in its global launch announcement and China Fold7 announcement.

Samsung can be marginal in China while remaining a major smartphone supplier elsewhere. Counterpoint reported that Samsung held 24% of global smartphone shipments in Q2 2026 and had the strongest year-over-year growth among the top five smartphone brands. That statistic covers all smartphones, not foldables, but it underscores how sharply regional performance can diverge. Counterpoint’s Q2 2026 global shipment figures provide the comparison.
The global foldable forecasts also argue against treating China’s difficulties as proof that Samsung is abandoning or failing at foldables worldwide. They do not guarantee Samsung’s growth, and they cannot answer how many Galaxy Z phones Chinese consumers bought. They do show why the more defensible interpretation is regional: Samsung’s China business is deeply weak, its foldable franchise faces intense local competition, and its global position is a separate question.
Quick Recap
How to read the “nosedive” claim
- Supported: Samsung’s total China smartphone shipments fell 60.8% year over year in Q2 2026, according to IDC, as its total-market shipment share moved from 0.4% to 0.1%.
- Supported with qualification: Samsung’s foldable business has faced pressure; Counterpoint reported a more-than-20% fall in Samsung foldable-panel procurement in 2024.
- Not established by these figures: That Samsung’s China retail sales of foldables fell 60.8%, that Samsung lost a specified share of China’s foldable category, or that the Fold7 or Flip7 failed.
- Not supported: That the global foldable category is collapsing; IDC and Counterpoint forecast global growth in 2026.
