There is no single best solar company for every homeowner. The right choice depends on your state, utility, roof, financing preference, expected electricity use, and the installer’s ability to handle permits and service after the sale.
Sunrun, Tesla Solar, and Palmetto are reasonable national companies to compare, while a qualified regional installer may offer better local pricing and follow-up service. The strongest quote is not necessarily the one with the lowest monthly payment. Compare the total installed cost, projected production, contract terms, warranties, and the company responsible for future repairs.
Best solar companies at a glance
| Company or group | Best for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrun | Bundled service and lease or PPA options | Customers using a lease or PPA generally do not own the system or claim the homeowner’s clean-energy credit. |
| Tesla Solar | Online pricing and integration with Tesla energy products | A panel-performance warranty is not the same as an all-inclusive warranty for every system component or roof issue. |
| Palmetto | Monitoring and optional service plans | Service coverage and pricing vary by plan, contract, location, and system condition. |
| Regional installers | Local permitting, utility knowledge, and in-person service | Verify licenses, insurance, recent references, and the actual company performing the work. |
1. Sunrun: best for bundled service and subscription-style solar
Sunrun is a useful option for homeowners who prefer a lease or power-purchase agreement rather than buying the equipment outright. Sunrun advertises 24/7 monitoring, maintenance and repairs, a 25-year service commitment, and—on its subscription offering—a production guarantee of at least 90% of estimated lifetime production.
Those promises should be read alongside the agreement. The contract controls the exclusions, production calculation, compensation formula, transfer requirements, and responsibility for roof work. A production guarantee also does not mean the system will eliminate your electric bill; you may still owe utility delivery charges, buy power from the grid, or pay for electricity that exceeds your system’s output.

With a lease or PPA, Sunrun generally owns the system. You pay either a recurring lease payment or a price for the electricity produced, rather than buying the panels. That structure can reduce upfront costs, but it may complicate a future home sale and generally means the homeowner is not the party entitled to claim the residential clean-energy credit.
Consider Sunrun if: you value maintenance being organized by the provider and want to avoid owning the equipment.
Ask before signing: Who pays for roof removal and reinstallation? What happens if the system underproduces? Can the agreement be transferred to a buyer? Is the payment fixed or subject to an escalator?
2. Tesla Solar: best for direct online pricing and Tesla integration
Tesla Solar appeals to buyers who want to begin with an online design and pricing process, particularly homeowners already considering a Tesla Powerwall or other Tesla energy products. Tesla states that purchased solar systems include a 25-year panel-performance warranty guaranteeing at least 80% of nameplate capacity. Tesla may process related claims and perform covered labor at its cost under the applicable warranty.
That is narrower than a blanket 25-year warranty on the entire installation. Ask separately about the inverter, battery, monitoring equipment, workmanship, roof penetrations, water damage, labor, and delays in service. Tesla says it uses in-house crews in its service areas and may also use Tesla-certified technicians or subcontractors. In areas where Tesla does not directly install, the buyer should identify the certified installer and determine which business handles each warranty claim.

Tesla’s online process can make initial comparisons easier, but an online estimate is not a substitute for a final site-specific design. The quote should account for roof age, shade, electrical-panel capacity, local code, utility export rules, and the location of any battery.
Consider Tesla if: transparent online starting prices and integration with Tesla storage matter to you, and you are willing to scrutinize the service arrangement in your area.
Ask before signing: Who is listed as the installer in the contract? Is roof repair included? Which company replaces a failed inverter or battery? What are the response-time commitments?

3. Palmetto: best for monitoring and service-plan options
Palmetto advertises a 25-year product warranty and a linear performance guarantee on solar panels. It also offers monitoring and service options, including Palmetto Protect or related plans, depending on the customer’s product and contract.
Palmetto’s published service information includes maintenance, repairs, panel cleaning, roof-leak investigation, pest abatement, inverter or optimizer replacement, and troubleshooting. Its maintenance and repair page lists a starting service price of $350, while noting that the actual price can vary based on location, system condition, improvements, lot size, and building type.

- Max Battery Voltage: 32V
Palmetto’s Peace of Mind terms describe an annual service offering with monitoring, remote diagnostics, access to a national field-service network, dispatch services, and discounted labor rates for eligible in-warranty repairs. That does not mean every Palmetto customer receives identical coverage. The signed plan, financing arrangement, geography, and warranty status matter.
Consider Palmetto if: ongoing monitoring and an optional service relationship are more important to you than choosing the lowest initial quote.

Regional installers may be the better choice
National brand recognition does not guarantee better installation or service. A local company may understand your utility’s interconnection process, local inspection requirements, roof styles, and incentive programs better than a sales office serving a large territory.
EnergySage’s 2026 Installer of the Year program selected companies using criteria that included licensing, certifications, experience, responsiveness, customer satisfaction, project outcomes, homeowner education, and business transparency. Its regional winners included All Energy Solar in the Midwest, Green Power Energy in the Northeast, and Solar Optimum on the West Coast. State winners included Lumina Solar in Maryland, Nova Solar in Virginia, 8MSolar in North Carolina, Sunergy in California, Solar Topps in Arizona, and Atma Energy in Texas.

- Confirm service territory. A company must serve your state and utility territory, not merely advertise nationally. Ask whether it has completed projects under your utility’s current interconnection rules.
- Verify credentials. Check the relevant state or local contractor and electrical licenses. NABCEP’s directory can help verify certified individuals, such as PV Installation Professionals or PV Design Specialists. A NABCEP credential belongs to the individual; it is not automatically a certification of the entire company.
- Get at least three written quotes. Compare proposals for the same assumptions: system size, annual production, battery capacity, roof work, electrical upgrades, monitoring, and utility-interconnection responsibilities.
- Compare total price. For a purchase, calculate the cash price and price per watt. For a loan, examine the APR, origination or dealer fee, term, total repayment, and any payment change. For a lease or PPA, calculate the expected total payments and check for annual escalators.
- Review the production estimate. The proposal should state expected annual kilowatt-hours and explain assumptions about shade, roof orientation, weather, degradation, and electricity use. A larger system is not automatically better if the utility provides weak compensation for exports.
- Identify the people doing the work. Ask whether installers are employees or subcontractors, who pulls permits, who schedules inspections, who submits the utility application, and who returns to correct failed inspections.
- Separate every warranty. Request the terms for panels, inverters, batteries, workmanship, roof penetrations, monitoring, and production. Confirm exclusions, claim procedures, labor coverage, response times, and whether coverage transfers if you sell the home.
- Check ownership. The contract should identify the owner of the panels, inverter, battery, monitoring account, and renewable-energy credits. Ownership affects tax treatment, maintenance, resale, and contract transfer.
Solar costs, incentives, and the 2026 tax-credit issue
Do not use a federal tax credit as an automatic assumption in a 2026 quote. The IRS states that the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for residential clean-energy property placed in service after December 31, 2025. For qualifying property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025, the credit was generally 30%.
The relevant tax year is generally when the property is installed, not simply when it is purchased. For eligible prior installations, qualified expenses could include new solar-electric panels, battery storage of at least 3 kWh, and certain installation labor, wiring, and onsite preparation. Used equipment was not eligible. A lease or PPA customer generally does not own the equipment and therefore is not the party claiming the homeowner’s credit.
State, local, and utility incentives can still vary. Check your ZIP code and utility territory through the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE), then confirm the rules with the program administrator. Ask the installer to show exactly where each incentive appears in the calculation and whether it is a guaranteed discount, an estimated tax benefit, or a separate application you must complete.

- “Solar is free.” The FTC identifies claims that grants or government programs will cover the entire installation—or that you will never pay another electric bill—as potential scam indicators.
- “You will eliminate your electric bill.” Savings depend on consumption, system size, sunlight, utility rates, fixed charges, and export compensation.
- “Net metering pays one-to-one everywhere.” Utilities may credit exports at different rates and impose eligibility, size, or time-of-use restrictions.
- “The 25-year warranty covers everything.” Panel performance, panel defects, inverter coverage, battery coverage, workmanship, roof leaks, and labor are separate questions.
- “Sign today to lock in the deal.” A salesperson’s deadline is not a reason to skip the contract, cancellation policy, payment schedule, warranty exclusions, or financing disclosures.
Questions to ask before choosing an installer
- What is the system’s expected annual production in kilowatt-hours?
- What assumptions were used for shade, roof orientation, degradation, and future electricity use?
- Who owns the equipment and renewable-energy credits?
- Who is responsible for permits, inspections, utility approval, and correcting delays?
- Are the installation crew and service technicians employees or subcontractors?
- What exactly does the workmanship and roof-leak warranty cover?
- Who pays to remove and reinstall panels if the roof needs replacement?
- What happens to the agreement if I sell the property?
- What are the loan’s APR, fees, total repayment, and payment schedule?
- Can you provide recent customers in my utility territory as references?

Is Sunrun or Tesla better?
It depends on whether you want to own the system and how much you value bundled service versus online pricing and Tesla integration. Compare the complete contract rather than the brand: ownership, total payments, production estimate, workmanship coverage, roof obligations, installer identity, and transfer rules can change the result.
Do solar panels still qualify for a federal tax credit in 2026?
The IRS states that the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for residential clean-energy property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not assume a 30% federal credit in a 2026 quote. State and utility incentives may differ by location.
How many solar quotes should I get?
Get at least three written quotes from companies that serve your utility territory. Compare total installed cost, expected annual production, financing costs, warranties, installation responsibility, utility compensation, and post-installation service—not just the monthly payment.
The Bottom Line
The best solar company is the qualified installer offering a realistic production estimate, competitive total price, clear ownership terms, strong local references, and warranties that remain useful when something goes wrong. Sunrun, Tesla Solar, and Palmetto can all be candidates, but compare each with at least two or three qualified regional installers. Verify licenses, inspect the financing terms, confirm utility rules, and never treat a sales promise as a substitute for the signed contract.
